Arrived yesterday at 7pm via the train (watch the step down to the platform!) to find an extremely busy pub (although virtually everyone had left by 9pm). Good beer (I tried the Silver Bullet and Piston Bitter) and lovely haddock and chips followed by a wonderful lemon posset. Slight downside was the attitude of the landlady who tried to say that we weren't allowed to move inside to one of 6 empty tables to eat our puddings.

I used to think this pub was alright but the landlord is a tosser.
I rarely post negative comments about landlords on here as it is unfair, but i will make an exception this time.
Such a shame as it is in such a lovely peaceful setting with the trains whizzing past.

10/10 for the pub and area
0/10 for the landlord and most of the stuck up customers that i saw in there

This is more of an open letter to "devon 21", and those of a similar persuasion who think it cool to drink straight from a bottle.

Gentlemen, and indeed Ladies, please feel free to indulge you baser urges by all means, but do be aware of the very distinct possible repercussions of your actions, and you will understand why the fellow behind the bar said "we don't serve in bottles", should the following happen to you.

Initially, you will suffer with flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, myalgias, intense headache). The flu-like illness may resolve without treatment but, in some cases, an immune phase follows with a return of fever, jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or a rash. In more severe cases, there may be organ failure, e.g. the kidneys, or meningitis.

Approximately 10% of those infected become jaundiced (with hepatocellular necrosis) and have a severe and rapidly progressive form of the disease with liver failure and renal failure.

The jaundice appears during days 5-9 of illness and is most intense 4-5 days later, continuing for about 1 month.

The degree of jaundice itself is not indicative of prognosis but leptospirosis without jaundice is very rarely fatal.

Purpura, petechiae, epistaxis, minor haemoptysis and other signs of bleeding are common.

Other symptoms include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rashes, conjunctival haemorrhage, and uveitis. There is often a severe headache, retro-orbital pain, and photophobia. A severe myalgia (lower back, and legs) is common. Leptospirosis may present as aseptic meningitis.

Pulmonary symptoms vary from cough, dyspnoea, and haemoptysis to adult respiratory distress syndrome and massive pulmonary haemorrhage.

Hepatomegaly: hepatic percussion tenderness is a useful indicator of continuing disease activity.

Kidney dysfunction (leptospiral nephropathy) is usual, sometimes with life-threatening renal failure with signs of uraemia and disturbance of consciousness.

Congratulation if you have any of the above! You have contracted Weils Disease! How cool is that?

Average pub that thinks it's posh, it's not. Nice looking pub from the outside with nice seating, the insides nice dark wooden bar area, but that's sadly where the word nice ends for this place. We had great welcome if you count great is when you walk up to the bar and the bar man looks over then walks off into the restaurant saying nothing, then comes back "no hello" just what can i get you. We ordered couple pint of the home brew and bottle of bud. Told the barman don't worry about a glass his reply "we don't serve in bottles" fare point if i was dining at THE IVY put I'm not, i'm in a run of the mill pub.
We looked at the menu very overpriced be leave me i work in the catering industry they must have big profit margins. oval review NICE PUB TO VISIT ONCE PUB YOU DEFIANTLY WOULDN'T MAKE IT A TWICE....!

Visited on a bank holiday monday a while back. The place was disorganised on arrival, with some people being told last orders for food had been taken and others arrriving afterwards being allowed to order. The landlady was having a shouting match with a poor lady who was being charged for what she hadn't had, this even admitted by the landlady. And very unprofessionally indeed the landlady was trying to canvass "support" for her rudeness from the customers at the bar (us)!!!! When the dust settled the food we had was very good, however I felt the ale was very "new" and not very well conditioned.

Those in my company often visit but I wouldn't go to the trouble in a hurry again.

Fantastic pub, about .5m from the A377 in Newton St Cyres. Really good well priced food and a good selection of their own micro brewery beers. Plenty of space and parking and friendly staff. Well worth a visit!

What a find ! Setting, food and beers all excellent. I had one of the Daily special meals - cold meat platter - and it came in 5 minutes, excellent value.
The 4.3 Piston ale is chocolatey and addictive !

One of the finest pubs i have ever been to, homemade beer and homemade food what can be better than that?! the piston bitter is to die for only wish it was nearer to my house! Try it you wont be disappointed

Great pub hidden away from Newton St Cyres down a country lane in Sweetham.

The beer range is well thought. Rail, Piston and Sleeper. I normally stick to the rail as have to drive here. The train would be helpful, but does not always stop, and its a long walk back home!!!

Food always appears to be freshly cooked, so be prepared for a little wait, but well worth it.

Well recommended.

Probably 1 of my Top 5 Pubs and all the players seemed to enjoy the friendly ambience. The beer is of the finest quality and when the Landlord,Mike, showed us round the brewery,it topped off a very enjoyable lunchtime before our victory vs Thorverton. Will return soon.10

Amazing pub. Held a uni social there a couple of times - ended up extremely squiffy on their excellent beers both times. Friendly and welcoming despite being a 'local' pub.

The Beer Engine has recently been taken over, but the beer is still the same and it's still an excellent pub to visit - good beer, nice open fire in the winter, nice places to sit outside in the summer. I'll be back to try the food later in the year.
I tried the Piston Bitter (4.6% ABV) and the Sleeper Heavy (5.4% ABV) - both very nice. The Sleeper Heavy had an unusual pricing on the board behind the bar - 1-25 a half or 2-60 a pint. Not sure if it was a mistake or what. The beer is also served in lined glasses so don't make a fool of yourself and ask for a top-up.
The pub is only a few yards from Newton St Cyres station (first stop from Exeter on the Exeter to Barnstaple line). Most of the trains which stop there are request stops, so you have to tell the ticket inspector on the train that you will want to get off, and you will also have the pleasure of standing on a (possibly) dark platform with your hand out, trying to make sure that the train driver sees you when you want to go home. It is not a platform for the elderly or infirm either, as it's about a two foot step down from the train - after a few pints of Sleeper Heavy the memory of how we got back up later that evening are a little vague....

six of us went ther for lunch on a Saturday. Waited a bit long for the meals, but when they arrived they were well worth the wait. Wife's salmon was superb, my chiken supreme was 'diferent' with a bacon and mushroom sauce (I thought chicken supreme came with a white sauce!), but whatever it was, was very tasty, indeed superb. Other friends had the Dab (fish) and Duck. We all thought the food was very good. The beer was glorious!!

Wonderful, wonderful pub. I used to live in Exeter and try to get back there on our annual holidays. We make a trip out to the Beer Engine as part of the 'pilgrimage' and it's always worth the visit. They still have a great selection of beers, excellect food and a wonderful landlord.

This pub holds a fantastic atmosphere, with its friendly staff, great food and outstanding beer. This is a classic pub that should not be missed.

Built as a railway hotel in 1850, the pub is home to Devon's oldest brewery opened in 1983. The brewery is visible from downstairs. There has been music outside and a bar-b-que when I have visited in the summer. It is a place that I have to visit on my way to (and from!!!) Cornwall. The food is excellent as is the beer. The Rail Ale, Piston Bitter and Sleeper Heavy are all really nice beers. A belter of a pub!!!
