big screens , well kept ale

Yes, I have to agree with many of the comments on here. Lots of shaven headed , lager drinking, middle aged 'shouties' struggling around a pool table with insufficient room to cue properly. Very male orientated. The pint of Doom Bar I had was drinkable but that was all. When my wife and her friend arrived, they as I did, felt the place felt a bit threatening. Not our cup of tea at all. Heck, even Muggletons is better than this.

It's an odd one.
Massive screens showing Sky Sports = shouty lager types.
3 decently kept ales, comfy seats and live music means I would and sometimes do go back.

Horrible.

I pretty much agree with the recent reviews. It was afternoon when I went in and the few customers present had the look of being there since the place had opened that morning. The woman behind the bar was friendly enough but it didn't feel like the sort of place I would want to visit after about 6pm. It's the sort of pub which appeals to a certain type of drinker. ie loud, mainly male, lager loving sports fans. Adnams Bitter and London Pride were the two ales on and to be fair the Pride was not bad.

A fairly intimidating local and not one for the outsiders.

First time in this pub, I've passed it many times and have seen the real ale black boards outside but I've always been put off by all the lager drinkers smoking outside.
i decide to give it a try and it is exactly as i expected it to be, a very male orientated crowed all clad in football shirts with shaved heads drinking lager and swearing and talking very loudly even though the people they are talking to is standing right next to each other!
I try to ignore the clientele and the SKY sports, Its difficult! but i manage to order a pint of London Pride.
I am pleasently surprised as it is in good condition.
I will probably never go to this pub again but If your a Real Ale drinker who loves noisy pubs and Sport then your in luck!
But its not for me.

Used to be quite a genteel place many years ago, but now more of a 'big screen sport' pub with a clientele to match. However, one of the few pubs where Courage Best is still the beer of choice.

Was in there last week and was very impressed. The pub is very spacious, which is surprising when you walk in as from the outside it appears relatively small. Inside you will find a wide array of TV's, a large pool table, a dart board and some fruit machines.
Age is slightly confusing being over 21's (me being 19) and being served last week but being told we couldn't get a drink this, otherwise good pub.

This is a traditional family run free-house in the centre of a busy town, an almost unheard of commodity these days. However it is also a whole lot more.
It is a pub that caters to everyone, 4 TV screens showing sport, 2 fruit machines, a dartboard and a pool table, regular live music and karaoke on Saturday nights, great food (I've seen many a hardened man fall short of completing a Sunday lunch), friendly service and, most importantly good beer.
Jim and Karen, the owners, are both real characters and this influence rubs off well on their bar staff, all of whom are efficent, offer service with a smile and are up for a chat.
The other factor in The Old House's favour is how remarkably trouble free it is, again something quite rare by Maidstone standards. In the years I've been a regular there I've never seen a punch thrown.
All in all a good all round boozer and well worth checking out if you're over 21 and not wearing a vest or baseball cap!

My favourite pub in Maidstone by an absolute country mile. It's resisted the temptation to follow the trend of the 'pub/bar' chain culture that has enveloped most of the rest of the town, and it still feels like a traditional boozer. The regulars are friendly enough and will usually engage in some sporting banter or other whilst the big screen is on. Cracking Karaoke on a Saturday night too, always treated as a bit of fun and not too serious. The landlord is a great character too, all in all it makes this place a pleasure to drink in.

This free-house is a trendy-free zone. Most punters are more middle-aged than trendy. There's usually a decent real beer or two but it's a bit pricey. As far as I know, Maidstone's most expensive pool table! (1 per frame.) Big Screen tv for sports.
