Excellent boozer, like the Sweeney and Minder, full of faces, helpful bar staff, a real contender for sorry Arthur I must have been lying..
Always running

have used this place alot latley and have no regrets

Top marks to the Flying Horse for helping us, after another pub close by let us down badly. We'd booked a function room at this other pub but, when we arrived, it had been double booked - despite two visits from us beforehand to confirm it. I hurried over to the Flying Horse, asked if they could help us and they did! Their own function room was made available to us and twenty five thirsty, grateful people were well looked after by them. Can't praise them highly enough!

Popped in last night to ask for directions to another boozer and was saddened I couldn't stay, as there was a decent array of ales on tap and Kozel for the lager drinkers. Staff seemed friendly and there was football on TV. Will definitely have to pay a proper visit next time I'm in the Liverpool Street area.

smashing pub

In my opinion the finest pub in London. As noted in previous reviews the words 'unpretentious' and 'traditional' spring to mind which may sound rather uninspiring, but I guess this pub is an antidote to the increasing number of gastro-pubs and 'bars' in the area (I don't hugely mind those, but I'm glad there is an alternative).
A good range of ales, well-kept Guinness, and lagers too (if that's your thing). The best thing about this place is the staff - fun, friendly, hard-working and good at their jobs - I seriously have never had to wait beyond a minute or so to be served, and mostly they will have clocked you as you walk in the door and be asking your order as they serve someone else at the same time.
Great pub, great people - may it never change!

Cannot really add anything to the previous few reviews. Just to agree that this is a very good unpretentious traditional corner pub, close enough to be a decent alternative to the sterile bars in the Broadgate centre. Comfortable interior as described by the Bonser below, and am in agreement with other posters that the only real thing missing is a better and more extensive choice of Ales. At the time of my visit the six handpumps were only dispensing GK IPA, Courage Best and Ringwood Best, but the Ringwoods was a very nice pint. And for the benefit of Strongers I can confirm that the pool table and dartboard are in the function room upstairs

What a fabulous pub. I can't believe that you can find a proper traditional local in the middle of the City of London. The staff are all friendly especially Kylie who remembered us from the previous evening and made us feel so welcome. Will be making a beeline for this pub on my next business trip

The first thing that I noticed upon entering here was the lack of the pool table and dartboard as advertised outside. I was then a little disappointed by the lack of manners from the barmaid who had the attitude of someone who had just found out that they had contracted syphilis. I will mention that my second pint was served by a different barmaid who was very friendly, which made me happy as I love these old boozers and hate leaving them with a sour taste in my mouth.
Greene King IPA, Ordinary and Websters Green Label were available alongside a selection of standard draught products. There is a basic pub grub menu and, as a previous reviewer has mentioned, the pizzas are worth a punt.
I spotted a plasma screen which was showing Sky Sports News feed which was muted, but I saw no live sport advertisements although I would be surprised if a pub of this nature didnt have the facility.
In the end I liked it in here and I would return.

Hidden Gem amongst the skyscrapers, this is an unashamedly grubby old school boozer, with suspicious looking locals mixing with City types. Has the interior of something on a Liverpool estate, but plenty of seating, cheap beer, and friendly staff make it a decent shout for a lunchtime drink. Serves huge Pizza's for a punchy 8, and a collection of home made toasted sandwiches. Shows Sky Sports News constantly, but to the best of my knowledge has no live sport package.

Unpretentious street corner pub in a side street close to Liverpool Street Station and the massive Broadgate development. It's an unremarkable pub in many respects, which, as a previous contributor infers, is remarkable in itself, given the large office block developments that have sprung up in this area in recent years. One might have reasonably expected it to have fallen victim to what the marketing departments of the big pubco's refer to as a "tasteful refurbishment".
Given the location, I'm a bit surprised at the dearth of recent postings and the fact that hardly any of the BITE London Pub regular posters seem to have dropped in over the years.
It's a single L shaped bar with much wood pannelling and carpeting helping to give the pub a reasonably traditional feel. Modern embellishments such as a smallish plasma TV screen and a couple of fruit machines are relatively unobtrusive.
On the evening of my visit, the clientele was mainly older and male, but "suits" by no means dominated. I suspect that the younger office workers in the area, for some unaccountable reason, prefer the Fleetwood, which I suppose would be described as more "with it" and female-friendly ( whatever that means )
There's 6 handpumps in total. On my visit beers on were Youngs Ordinary, Greene King IPA, Pedigree and Bombardier, the latter being on good form and probably relatively cheap for the area at 3.
Advertising material of one form or another indicated that Adnams Explorer, Hobgoblin and Courage Best had probably been on at some time or another, but I didn't sense that this pub had much of a real ale focus or emphasis.
This is the type of unassuming and unpretentious type of pub that I generally like, but I'd like it even more if there was a more adventurous beer range.

As others have said, this is a down-to-earth no-nonsense boozer located just behind Finsbury Square. This kind of establishment is not that common in the City any more, and good to find. It had six pumps dispensing either three or four real ales - nothing very exciting though. Service was good and there was a basic pub grub menu. I liked it, and I'd return next time I'm in this area.
|
disappointing choice of ales - just 2 though quite down to earth for the area
|
Classic unreconstructed boozer at the back of Broadgate - much better than any of the bars or pubs in complex itself
Not the sort of place to attract any poseurs from your office so ideal to slip into for a quiet one after work
|
Amazingly genuine pub considering it's location next to all the plastic , yuppie haunts in Bishopsgate.
Excellent ...well worth looking up (unless you fit the above in which case don't bother !)

A very pleasant surprise to re-visit this pub after 6 years. It has had a great refurbishment without losing the ambience and style of old. Barstaff were very attentive during a busy lunchtime and had a very pleasant manner. Good to see some of the old regulars still in their usual corner. Unfortunately I got the wrong day for the legendary salt beef sandwich so I just stuck to Stella. All in all, very much worth the effort and I shall return.

One of the few real 'Pubs' left in the city. Good range of lagers, beers and good quality ales with regular 'guest' brews. Lunchtime food available and big screens for sports viewing.
Friendly and obliging bar staff and some regular customers lend a 'local' feel to the place. Definitly worth a couple of visits.
|
Very friendly pub serves an excellent pint of Blackthorn Cider with a cheery smile. Normally 2 or 3 guest beers on tap of a high quality.

Apparently a market legend drinks here...Gawd bless him!

Visited last Friday (30th Dec). Was served very quickly (not many customers), by friendly bar-staff.
Surprised and delighted to be offered free mince pies, even before getting our drinks.
Very impressive.

one of those pubs that has obviously not had a stitch done to it in 20 yrs,...squalid and dirty but decent,...its the type of gaff where the clientele would be sitting in the bookies instead if they served booze.
|
Went here on Friday with 2 mates. Had a good pint of Spitfire although my mate's Youngs had to be returned due to it being off. Then spent the rest of our visit trying to work out what on Earth the white plastic globe is, located just in front of the net curtained Gents toilet. By the way, the toilet really is a complete khazi.

Good, clean, city boozer and surprisingly cheap for the area.
Interesting looking hot roast sandwiches that change on a daily basis.
All in all a good place to hide from the boss.

Had a pint here earlier. The Youngs was on terrible form. A recent change of landlord hasn't helped this place at all.

Ask to try out the Dave's insanity sauce behind the bar...The most evil chili sauce in the world.

Agree about the IPA but then I find that always disappoints. Try the Young instead. Very tasty. Also different freshly carved roast (ham, beef, pork etc) sandwiches daily.

Despite the severe reservations I had about this place, it turns out it's not a bad one or two-pinter. Stick to the lager or the guiness, as the IPA disappoints. What it lacks in decor, it makes up for in character. Usual fruit machines and suits after work, very busy on friday nights.
