This was pub of the day for us in the Dales. We arrived at around sunset on Saturday. Darkness was falling. But the views were still superb. We sat on the outdoor terrace and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside and all its sounds (mostly sheep!). The ale range was the most varied we found on this crawl too - Wincle Lord Lucan, Peak Ales Summer Sovereign, Whim Hartington Bitter, Derventio Equinocks & Storm Desert Storm. The only downside was that there was no real cider - Stowford Press was the keg option. Good pub in a superb location.

Top marks for beer quality and choice. Best I had on the whole trip I think.
As previous poster noted, the buffet layout for the food is a little odd - how long has it spent under hot lamps I wondered.
Anyway, the terrace with views over Lathkill Dale is what makes the place special. Worth a visit for that and for the beer.

Hot topic among the locals is the dropping of this venue from the CAMRA good beer guide. The alleged reason being that the bar is not big enough!
Perhaps there should be a CAMRA big bar guide?
Certainly nothing has changed with respect to choice, quality and service. Still an 8 in my opinion, and that of many others.

Brilliant range of real ales, great food and lovely unspoiled bar with a coal fire. In such a special location this is a magic place. Seems they have been dropped out of the CAMRA good beer guide this year after being recommended for 28 consecutive years. That's plain daft even if only to make space for newcomers. Don't be misled; that's CAMRA's shortsightedness and no reflection on the quality of the Lathkil.

As an added bonus, they are now offering "Beer Tapas" - your choice of three 1/3rd pints of their excellent range served in proper 1/3rd measure tulip glasses on a board with cut-outs for the stems and each beer labelled - for 3. A brilliant way to try the different ales - would that so many pubs took the time and care to do this, it would seriously encourage more people to get into ale.

Stayed here with 3 friends for a long weekend earlier this month. We were bowled over by the friendliness of the staff and locals, the quality of the food, the FANTASTIC view from the dining room and, by no means last, the stunning beer range. The breakfasts are legendary, and many of the dishes on the evening menu use locally sourced food. Every night was a treat. They have struck the right balance of keeping a styliish reataurant alongside a traditional unspoiled bar. I don't know anywhere else in the area which has that range and quality of real ales - mostly micros and new ones constantly appearing. This place is a gem. Don't pass by; don't miss out!

Good location, good beer, wouldn't eat hear - see comment by Steve 2905.

Can't really add any new comments to those already posted...an extraordinary view from a very ordinary looking building, excellent range of very well kept beers and bustlingly full already only 15 minutes after opening on a Sunday lunchntime. Didn't eat this time, but looks well worth another tramp over the hill from Youlgrave.

A really excellent place. The food, the beer, and the rooms are outstanding,

The Lathkill is in a fantastic location with stunning views across the Lathkill Valley to Youlgrave and the high moors beyond the Wye and Derwent valleys. And full marks for the beer. There are five real ales available and none seems to be a mainstream brand. I did see brews from Kelham Island and Peak Ales before I noticed a Hartington pump clip and being a Whims fan it was no contest after that. It was excellent and it is easy to see why the pub is a regular in the GBG.
But I am not sure if I like the style of food presentation with the main meals, salads, bar snacks and sweets all laid out together in buffet style on one large table. Although the quality is pretty good and it is reasonably priced, the choice is somewhat limited.
In summary; the Lathkill is in a lovely location, it serves excellent beer and pretty good food, but for me it has poor ambiance. Sitting in the lounge of the pub reminded me SO much of being in the dining room of a 1960s boarding house. But Ill go with the flow and give it another 8/10 rating ...

This pub is a classic, unspoiled, Dales retreat. The landlord has the distinction of 25 consecutive years in GBG and deservedly so. Five real ales, always one from the local Hartington brewery and another often from the Peak brewery at Chatsworth. Also an Everards beer and 2 other guests. The pub has an open fire and there is a covered area outside for the death wish smoking brigade. The landlord's daughters know more about rugby than the four of us did! We stayed there for a weekend and enjoyed very good meals in the restaurant and the best full English breakfast that we could remember. The food was sourced locally and was top quality. It's a wonderful area for walking. Cannot fault this place. Do visit.

This was a lovely setting to have our lunch with a superb choice of real ales. The food was well laid out so you could see the choice available and was very tasty. No problems with the excellent real ales either.

First class Brains S.A.plus other real ales, this is a beer lovers paradise.Superb view complemented by a traditional pub grub menu where the portions are more than generous.Worth seeking out even on a misty winters day!
|
Excellent pub, all 4 beers we tried were in perfect condition. Take your boots off if they are muddy, take your dog in but be prepared to leave if it plays up.
|
I cannot fault it on any count!

I have not tried the food. The view is -indeed- good. However, certainly the best beer within many miles. The cellar is not just kept well, it is clean. They care for the lines and appreciate what they pour. 5 ales with several guests at a time. Really good.

The best view I have ever had whilst sat outside a pub whilst supping on a superb pint of ale!

Absolutely fantastic beer, food, wine. One of the friendliest cosiest pubs I have ever had the pleasure of drinking in. Highly recommend this pub especially in the evening when the rain is pouring the wind is howling just sit yourself infront of the log fire and enjoy!!
