In 1996 i lived about 30 secs away from this pub. Thats said I didnt go in that often but found it a civilized hostility. Cant comment on the truth or otherwise of EDL connections but it would be sad if it was true.

Avoid this pub at all costs!
|
As a local resident I urge people NOT to visit this pub, it is hostile environment which has very well known connections with the EDL since the closure of the Alma Arms - just type Connaught Arms into google and you will easily find the connections. There are constant groups of people outside this pub, they shout and swear and regularly get into fights along the road. Any responsible landlady would steer well clear of the EDL if they had any pride in their pub... I think the posts and the news coverage speak volumes of where the landlady's values lie. The scariest thing is that this pub is so close to both an Infant School and a school for young people with behavioural issues.
In response to the comments from regular Poplarkin - why on earth would any pub landlady willingly allow her pub to become a focal point for such a disgusting organisation? Whether the police asked or not! Funny how they've been moved on from the John Jaques - I'm sure Whetherspoon's wants no association with this movement! Such a shame the patrons of this pub bring such a bad reputation with them. I have visited this pub on a number of occasions in the past but would not step foot in there now for fear of my safety - and I don't scare easily!

Amg. Yes the posts were made before the last march, but its not the first time the EDL had been in, and again at the request of the Police. There was no obligation for the landlady to comply, but when requested by the Police to help stop a breach of the peace we, as regulars believe she was in order to help. They will NOT be returning to the pub. This is the second time we have posted to let people know that we are a friendly pub, can you see a pattern emerging. I again urge all to come and see for yourselves.
|
Poplarkin - there was no obligation on the landlady to agree to the Police's request. Consider the posts below, made well before the demo in question and to all appearances by unconnected individuals. See a.pattern emerging? Drunken, loud, abusive racists???

Speaking as a regular of over10 years, I felt compelled to answer the comments I have read regarding my local. This establishment does not support the EDL. The landlady was asked by the Police to allow them to meet in the pub, to ensure they were all in one place. As for the Landladies' children being supporters, this is blatantly not true. It is, and always has been a family friendly and we would welcome the previous commentators to pop in and see for themselves .

Wouldn't go to this pub as it supports the English Defence League; the epitome of unfriendly inhospitability. Beer and bigotry? No thanks.
|
Was ok until rasists started to use it. Not very friendly now :(
|
I am disgusted to hear this pub hosted a gathering of the racist English Defence League. Other comments indicate this is not the first time - I will never visit this establishment and I hope no-one else does
|
Went in there last weekend and there was a group of very drunk thugs making racist chants. Left before we had chance to get served. Won't be going back - threatening and intimidating to say the least!
|
This pub used to be OK, but has gone down hill over the past 3 months or so. From speaking with regulars I gather the Landlady's kids are into the English Defence League - since this happened it has turned into a social club for racist thugs, and by looking at the state of them drug users as well. Avoid at all costs. probably the most unfriendly pub in the area. Lets hope something changes as this used to be a nice little community pub, although it is used by away fans during match days.

I take it the rating for this pub has been carried over from the previous landlady's time, now dire, worth about 2/10

Myself and my girlfriend went here last night. We were taunted by the people in the pub and made to feel very unwelcome. The staff were friendly and told us where to go and find some food but we left rather sharpish.

change of hands, and not for the better
|
nice place. the locals/regulars are friendly and so are the bar staff.
a very friendly dog lives there too, who roams the pub, which is nice.
they serve cornish pastie with chips which os only a good thing.
beer wise, they had the usual lagers, but they also have a 7.8% cider for 2.80, should u be in the mood to get legless.
good pub atmosphere.
also its a great location to take the quicker back route to fratton park (pompeys ground).

Excellent pub: warm, friendly atmosphere and a well kept, unusual selection of small brewery beers. I came here as an away supporter for a match at Fratton Park, having been told it was 'good for away fans'. Not a single one - all Pompey supporters! It is in a back street, mind, and parking is nigh-on impossible; the only place seems to be the pay and display in Nancy Road (if there's a space). But it's worth it once you get there. The kind of place you'd happily while away an afternoon session if you had the time.

What can I say but fantastic pasties!! and good beer. Worth a visit
|
the best pub and very welcoming
|
What a lovely pub!
|
Nice enough place, with good beer and atmos. One of the nicest pubs in Fratton. My only critism is they've put a pool table in(I like pool tables, don't get me wrong). It just leaves the place with very few tables, so you need to get there very early. Apart from that little complaint, it's a good pub and well worth a visit!

The Connaught Arms is a lovely, friendly, backstreet pub close to Fratton Park. With a wide selection of drinks available including 5 real ales, there's plenty for everyone. Food is served throughout the week and the traditional home-made pasties are to die for.
Regular quiz nights are held on Monday's, as well as ladies and mens darts and a barbilliards team. The staff are friendly and the general atmosphere is very welcoming to all.

Great food - you've GOT to try their home-made pasties! Not for away supporters on match days.
