Agree with rpf1955. Gone downhill.

Typical Greene King pub with only a few beers on. nothing to write home about.
Would not visit again.

Went there on a busy Friday night with a good old bit of chavi-oake playing.
Was an entertaining crowd with an older edge to it.
the ale was good and price was reasonable.
this pub holds a lot of history if you make the effort to read some of the odds and ends on the walls.
Can't comment on the food.
Staff were friendly.

a nice pub with an old time look and feel to it. plus even when its busy it still seems quiet.

foods abit pricey though.

Worth a visit if passing. Nice, but pricey pint of Titanic. Near the cathedral.
baxterfish - 30 Mar 2012 06:42
Expensive slightly dissapointing pub right in the city centre near to the cathedral. Not bad for a quick visit on a saturday night pub crawl
Tourist prices though 6/10

If you want to pay 7.95p. for a lump of batter and a small bag of chips on a chopping board, this is the place to go!! I was absolutely disgusted with the meal which was advertised outside the pub as "Lovely Battered Cod". What I received was a piece of batter which had obviously been re-heated at least once, until the fish inside had been fried to, (literally) a tasteless crisp, and a small paper bag containing about ten or twelve small chips!!! NEVER AGAIN! There was no offer of a refund, just an "I'll inform the chef" from the waitress.

Love the history of this place. we spent quite a lot of time in this boozer at the weekend and it was pretty good, agreed the decor is a bit modern for an 'old' pub. Most of the staff very cool, agree about the large barman or whatever he is - started throwing his weight around for no good reason at one point in the evening. Beer ok, overall not bad at all.

this pub looks old outside and inside with wood floor only a drink but was soon served. the pint was ok the pub looke very dark inside with not much lighting

disapointing. My visit was similar to BobOs'

Old Rosie cider - special offer 3.05 pint

Yes, as has been said before, shame about the inside. Shame too about the huge sour-faced barman with matching demeanour who spent most of the time we were in there bemoaning how busy he was, while allowing glasses and bottles to mount up on every table simply because the area of the bar reserved for dirties was stacked about a foot high with absolute shed-loads of dirty dinner plates. Only saving grace of the place was the pleasant young barmaid and the beers (Abbot Reserve, Abbot Ale, Otter Ale and Old Speckled Hen) - so not a complete waste of a visit!

Looks great from the outside, but so disapointing inside. Tried to order some food, but the clock watching barmaid said I was five minutes too early....
Almost walked out, but thought we would try it. Food O.K. but was ruined for the Mrs, by the weird man sitting at the next table. Who stared at her while I was in the loo. He seems to be fixture unfortunatly.

Has never been the same since the pub had a refurb in the 1980s, with the original interior being sold and exported to the states ! shocking !
bellas - 16 Aug 2008 02:05
Seems to have taken alot of stick on here for the simple reason that the interior isn't hundreds of years old. On our visit it was clean and the service was fast and friendly which counts for more in my book than an old fireplace.

Exeter lacks good, traditional pubs. At least this pub looks the part on the outside, a C16 half-timbered affaor down a narrow Medieval lane in the cathedral quarter.

Inside, though, it looks like your everyday, slightly tacky, slightly run-down pub. I was reminded of a similar pub next to Coventry Cathedral.

This place could be much better, and I just hope they don't turn it into flats before someone can make more of it.
Greshon - 10 Apr 2008 23:26
What a shame, lovely outside but spoilt by the cruddy interior. Beer wasn't much better.

The sort of place Greene King should be putting their money into, instead of trying to ruin pubs that are already fine.
mrse1 - 3 Dec 2007 12:28
Pretty disappointing, looks promising from the outside but ruined inside: hideous renovations have removed all the original features, although it's not as if any renovations have happening in the last 20 years. Too many fruitmachines and other flashing lights; dodgy punters too. I was a student in Exeter 15 years ago and I don't recall it being that bad then - maybe my standards were lower. Francis Drake would turn in his grave!

Well what an experince. I ordered food and it took nearly 40 minutes to arrive and is was disgusting. Place just looked dirty glasses just left on tables even though it was quite. Bar staff moody and very rude, and what i can just guess to be the manager he just looked a mess as he was shouting at staff behind the bar. ( very perfessional)
anonymous - 23 Jul 2007 13:45
Pub is fine if your into your bar flies, couldn't finish my pint due to the fact i had to share it with said flies.
anonymous - 30 Jun 2007 20:01
Pretty uninspiring Greene King Pub. Bar staff quality poor unless asking for a white wine spritzer is an unusual request When we explained what it was the drink turned up in a glass with lipstick around the rim. A pint is usually served to the 1 pint mark. I had to get it topped.Didnt bother to order food as i did not think it would turn up before closing time. Atmosphere missing, presumed lost!!
johnandcarol - 30 Jun 2007 16:34
This pub is so boring even the manager was asleep in the restaurant when I visited! Thought Greene King was better than this? The toilets had broken locks and no toilet rolls, this is not what I expected from Exeters oldest pub. Very Disapointing.
anonymous - 17 Jun 2007 19:02
Bad service, dissapointing food, no real choice of ales. Whats next?
anonymous - 15 May 2007 20:55
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!? Old pub, contempory decor? There is never enough staff on and they always seem miserable. Disapointing
anonymous - 8 May 2007 18:56
Worst pub in exeter. Very smokey even though quiet when we called. Toilets are disgusting.
paulb - 18 Dec 2006 19:48
over priced 8.50 for 2 drinks
anonymous - 5 Jun 2006 16:55

anonymous - 27 Nov 2004 21:02
Average.cant think of much more to say really.
James - 13 Nov 2004 21:35
Reportedly a haunt of Sir Francis Drake, as opposed to Sir Walter Raleigh, but the old sea dog would turn in his grave if he saw it now. A decent pub ruined by modern design.
Ollie Reed - 30 Aug 2004 15:40
It is a very nice pub, we frequent the pub every time we visit Exeter for the day from Barnstaple. We find the pub reasonably priced with good pub grub ( Especially the Bailey's Torte and ham, eggs and chips. One of us is a vegetarian and his meal would please any herbivore! We will be back to visit at the beginning of May, for another fill - up!
Sidney, Ralph & Annabel - 14 Mar 2004 15:20
Tudor period pub, allegedly frequented by Sir Walter Raleigh. Bar downstairs, restaurant upstairs. Good bar meals, usual beers.
