Train journey from hell last Saturday, thought I''d have a pint to chill out - pub closed again!!!!!! 9.30 on a Saturday night???

Brought my 2 year old in here after 8pm last night! But don't worry, he won't become a regular! Like his father, he leads a bit of a nomadic lifestyle. This is as typical a railway pub as you will find - a great place to sink one or two before your train and a good excuse to miss a few too. 4 ales were on - Timothy Taylor Landlord, Hopback Summer Lightning, Acorn Gorlovka & Yeovil Posh IPA. They are advertised on a blackboard outside the front door. I particularly appreciated the stout. It was the only truly dark ale I had found during my days's travels. There seemed to be some kind of astroturf on the ceiling of the gents which I found a little odd!

Why oh why do we have to put up with very young kids (3 or 4 year old) screaming and running around at gone 8pm in the evening?
To keep The Woodman (now closed) exiles, some of which said they'd never set foot in here happy.
Combine this with an idiotic SWT employee that spends 5 hours a day in here, in uniform, spouting absolute rubbish and thinks he's funny.
The beer is good but the ambience is getting to be really hard work.

Beware if you arrive late in the evening, both doors shut at 21.55 last night.
Pub has a voter's choice for one of the hand pumped beers, currently it's TT Landlord - rare for this part of the world, needless to say sales of Doom Bar have dropped.

Large rambling old style hotel type of pub with a bit of a run down feel to it. Oly a few old souls in watching the football on the telly. Three ales on of which I tried the Plain Inntrigue which was nice enough.

I have heard a rumour that this pub is to be turned into a JD Wetherspoons next year. Which might be a good thing for the area.

Somewhat down at heel but friendly and the Otter is good. One of the better along the Poole Rd drag, but it is a funny area that is a bit devoid of locals and passing trade.

Speaking as one of the middle aged readers (from a previous poster).
The third handpump is now in regular use, currently Palmers Copper Ale, can't say what it's like as I'm sticking to my usual Otter.
Also the pub is now serving a limited, reasonably priced food menu between 12.00 and 2.30 Monday - Friday.
Still fairly quiet, but that's the way some of us like it!

Rolled in here from an event down the road. It was a Saturday night, somebodies birthday disco was in full swing and the place was writhing with an abundance of young ladies dressed as whores through to Guantanamo Bay prisoners. This didn't set a good picture for me on entering, so I picked a path through the 'dance floor' to the bar so I could peruse the booze. First and foremost, I judge a pub on its ale line-up, not clientele. A nice selection of ale on of which I sampled most. Sat in a corner section with friends, away from the celebrations taking place, I weighed up the place. Its a nice venue. High ceilings, spacious. The gents was a tad dog eared, but I don't rate pubs on how good the toilets are. You go into a pub to booze, not hang around in toilets. Imagining for a moment the young revellers and the laziest DJ in history - (he put on a mix CD and stood there pretending he was doing something) - had been evaporated by a War of the Worlds style laser beam, the place would be very good. With the train station opposite, it was handy for my mate who had to travel back down the line to Weymouth.

Popped in for an afternoon pint: Otter, excellent. A few locals, middle aged, reading or contemplating; younger pissheads digging a deeper hole for themselves with the barmaid. The concept of shabby chic might have been invented here.

Otter - which is very well kept - and Summer Lightning are the regular beers although the third beer pump is rarely dispensing.
Been in a couple of times recently and it was very quiet on both occasions, even though both visits were made on a Friday.
Not sure what the atmosphere was like before the trash were removed as Patrick puts it but to be frank there is very little atmosphere at the moment. Worth a visit though just for the quality of the Otter.

Stayed overnight for 10th Poole beer fest. Large pub with a feeling of emptiness - on a cold, wet Saturday afternoon. Friendly locals though and bar staff. Summer Lightning. Otter & London Pride. But on returning for our last pint around 10:50pm the bar was all but closed ...so never sampled the beer. Accomodation adequate at 50 for the room (no breakfast)

stopped in here and a nice pint of summer lightning was main course, good boozer to kill some time waiting for the train.

Very quiet on a Tuesday night, but beer OK

lovely to see that the trash from the public bar have been barred with a totally different atmosphere now. well done debbie!!

I have 2 say i love this pub! I stayed their overnight and the rooms were immaculate and the breakfast was superb. I would recommend anyone to stay there and if your going to pick one night to visit then go on one of their themed nights as the hawaian night was great!!

The pub has had a bit of a refurbishment, new carpet, new furniture and a dedicated sports bar. On the down side the clientelle are much the same.

Got to agree with Joe. Was once a decent boozer and remember a time in the late 80s when almost every member of our occasional football team won a prize in the Sunday meat draw much to the disgust of the regulars who took it in good part to be fair to them. Those days are long gone however and it is just as Joe describes it.
