I actually got kicked out of here for putting money in the pool table after they'd rung the bell for last orders at 10:45pm on a Saturday night. The landlady is the rudest, most surly individual it's been my misfortune to come across in a long time. There were around twenty people rattling around here all night and no wonder it's empty when you get service like that. I felt acutely sorry for the barman who was the complete opposite of his employer.

Sadly this place is not serving cask anymore and has turned into a keg only place. With the cask gone so have the regulars possibly to the new wetherspoons. Seems Mr Smith is taking the wrong path once again.

This pub was refurbed about 15 months ago, and is popular with the locals. Sam Smiths here is good and the prices are very cheap. The same as Jolly Sailers. You are made welcome by the staff, who used to be at Jolly Sailers, and the locals are ok. Quite a few separate rooms so you can sit where the mood takes you Long beer garden at the rear, no parking near. Well worth a visit,

When I did my final teaching practice at Whitby School in 1975, this was the "teachers' pub" ... back in the days when teachers were still instinctively bohemian, and I do recall some very convivial evenings here. Later, c 1981, it must still have been fairly bohemian because somebody complained to me in the street that she'd once seen someone "reading a book" in the bar! (I couldn't help point out that I regularly read in pubs!) Called in last night, though, and found it rather dreary. However, my instinctive nostalgia ensured that I was thrilled to find that the decor was just as shabby as it was back in '76! Something's missing, though. Teachers, probably.

What a dump!! The beer on pump was crap, too cold and cloudy. Barmaid on duty was too busy texting friends to even serve. Come on Sam Smiths you can do better than this. If there was a minus rating I would give it

i have been visiting this pub for the last 39years. it has never changed and it still has plenty of character. the owners are really friendly. well worth a visit as it is one of the very rare pubs in whitby with a family room.

Typical Sam Smiths pub.Happy memories of Italy v England in 1997 (one of the few Whitby pubs that has Sky and uses it). The pub was packed and a guy and his girlfriend got down to business during the 2nd half, to raucous cheers. Situated on the crawl route and in the shopping precinct so plenty of other options, should you so wish
