CAMRA 'London Drinker' Aug/Sept 2015 reports (p30) that the Glass Works is one of several pubs put up for sale by JD Wetherspoon and will remain trading till sold. Meantime JDW are reported as saying they will continue to open new pubs...."
Personally, never been in, given JDW's 'Angel' pub round the corner.

This may not be one of Islington's renowned Gastropubs, but it is cheerful and friendly.
And people seem to be happy. They smile. In London.
Pretty good range of beers and reasonably priced. Staff are ok.

A busy but not too bad 'Spoons, the Doombar I tried was well kept. Food average.

Right. Ok. It's a Wetherspoons. It's in a shopping centre. It doesnt have a great choice of ales. And it should be shite. But it's not bad. Its really not . Three visits in 5 days Big windows , friendly staff , quick service and the best Spoons grub I've had. Fair choice of ciders available during their festival. Particularly Hogans and a Sandfords ginger cider among others. Only visited in the afternoon so not sure how the night pans out. Didn't once hear anyone swear. Or sing. Good.

Well this is now just a wetherspoons instead of a lloyds no1 but it is still crap , the worst spoon in the borough of Islington .

Great Prices but unfortunately the service left me with wanting a bit more. Got there at quarter to three on a Tuesday and chose their excellent steak club meal. Unfortunately when ordering at the bar at 14.55, I was told it didnt start til 3pm so I was made to stand at the bar for 5 mins until 3 pm....Not very good considering there were next to no one in the pub so I cant imagine the kitchen was busy Food was ok but not the best. Came back for a beer prior to the gig I was going to at The Academy downstairs and it was a lot better...better service and a better atmosphere. Shame about my lunch......

Would have been a top notch visit had it not been for the overlong wait at the bar to be served. Lots of staff Ending and starting shifts but none actually serving except one girl- Bah! Maybe Thursdays at about 5pm should be avoided then.....

This modern shopping mall Lloyds Bar has, on the face of it, very little appeal. It is generally fairly quiet by day but gets more clubby in the evenings when the loud music kicks in. The faceless interior has a sunken level at the front with the now obligatory sofas, low tables and modern artwork although it looks like the multiple TVs have been toned down as they were not as in your face as I recall from previous visits. The big plus on my recent trip is that they have doubled the number of hand pumps to 6 with 3 guests alongside the staple Ruddles County, Abbott and Marcle Hill Cider. Unfortunately it is a lucky draw as to how many will have the Available Soon clip attached. Prices are cheaper than most central London Spoons (guest ales 1.89 most are over 2 including the nearby Angel). Whilst it may have shown some signs of improvement, the music is still annoyingly rubbish and overall it is still a pretty dull place to visit. I certainly couldnt make a long night of the place.

just another chav bar on upper street

The only good reason to visit this place was the gorgeous Samantha. Alas she is moving on. So so shall I and many others. Sighhhhhhhhh...........

chav central, avoid.

A Lloyd's Bar is only going to start off with a score of 5 anyway, but any hope of redeeming points was quashed when their bouncers accosted the 4 of us and firstly demanded to know how many of us there were (whether this was to test to see if we could deal with elementary mathematics - or simply because they could not - was unclear), then demanded to see ID (the youngest in our party was 28), and then warned me that I had to take off my hat or I wouldn't be allowed in. It's not like the place was even 50% full, so based on the otherwise lacklustre performance given I think we'll be going elsewhere in future.
|
Have drunk in here a few times en route to gigs at The Academy just across the way on the other side of the shopping centre. Typical Lloyd's No.1 in that it's basically a Wetherspoon's minus the good points(cheap beer, good range, cheap and cheerful grub and the absence of shite music) and as such is much less appealing than a pub from its sister chain. Prices are still competetive with most in this area though and it's location means that I'll probably call again despite the distinct absence of atmosphere. Sometimes convenience is King. Food's ok if a little pretentious and dear for microwave re-heated ready meals, bottles of Red Stripe are always welcome and at least they keep them good and cold. Music is poor and not very varied. Hard to know who it is that voluntarily frequents such places as they aren't trendy enough to attract the sheep that follow fads, but nor are they inviting enough to entice the less "cutting edge" drinkers that want to "keep it old school" as they have impersonal interiors and service, the prices are nothing special and it just comes over as trying too hard.

We went here one Sunday night cos everywhere else was closing, busy on a Sunday, polite bouncers, served really quickly, only problem was tables were dirty, there did not seem to be much glass collecting going on. Lloyds no 1 bars do everything they promise and dont pretend to be anything that they are not! Go and enjoy!

Had drinks in there last night before cinema. Awful, loud, not a nice place for a quiet drink, too much like an airport bar. Good and cheap selection of beers (its a Wetherspoons). Clearly provides a lot of fun for the local teenagers and I would have loved it ten years ago no doubt so I am not going to knock it!

Was my first time last friday in this place....i prefer Angel to the west end (oxford street, soho, leicester square, covent garden)
due to it being closer to home, being cheaper...and has more class...people are generally more friendlyand out for a laugh...than the snobby ppl in the west.
the Glassworks was great,i didnt know anyone..they was no rough characters...unlike ELbow rooms!... the girls looked gorjus...drinks were cheap..toilets were big and clean...the staff where very fast..the size of the pub is reasonable..could hold roughly 200 im guessing... i didnt experience anything with the bouncers...just walked in...dress code?? (i wore casual..jeans/tshirt/boots+fur coat :P)(thats the way it shud be...bouncers task is to keep the peace n be friendly..i hate bouncers with attitude..also
most of the people i met were students..
and on top of all that...there was this lil dood 5ft...and he was dancing for ages..mostly on his own..he danced like a kid...it was so funny... and people joined in and copied his moves...he didnt take that as an offence...and everyone had a laugh.. no trouble...
so i rate this pub 10/10....
visit here with ur mates if u want a good drink up...!
|
Not particularly memorable. Formed the meeting point for a mate's birthday pub crawl and was extremely underwhelming. The London Pride was ridiculously warm, the temperature not changing despite the bar staff re-pouring it twice(service was quick though, which was a plus point). The padded chairs and cubes were pretty comfortable but the whole place just looks too garish and manufactured - too much psychadelic carpet and clashing colour. A number of tables were covered with empty plates and glasses when we got there and had still not been cleared when we left an hour later! As foxski said the toilets are above standard, but that's never going to be the most important thing in a pub.
|
its a fantastic pub,..i knew no one in there
|
This is a good place to avoid. Terrible music, creepy customers and a hyperactive barman with an attention deficit disorder. I paid for a beer, and then had to ask for it several minutes later after he'd served another half dozen customers. Great toilets though - I'll give them 1/10 instead of 0/10 just for the toilets.
|
it is a fantastic pub u know everyone in there
|
Apparently there is no r'n'b played so it is not entirely without merit.
|
we like this place and the bouncers are really friendly, and being strict means that trash doesnt come in. The new DJ isnt so great as he has been known not to play r'n'b because he thinks it will start a fight, but there is an olser baldish guy who is great...we love it.

Please Bouncers are just Bouncers! There not supposed to be 5ft 1 with a 28inch waist are they?? Just understand bouncers do sometimes think they are good standing on the door!!! I wouldn't let that ruin my night out. :-)
Sarah-Jane - 28 May 2004 01:20 |
Last saturday was a good laugh, dont know about any other nights. Worth a look!
Craig - 28 May 2004 01:17 |
All I can say "K" is if it was that awful why did you stay around to decide the drinks were expensive?? Prices are reasonable for the area, staff are polite and people are friendly. Would recommend this place.Just look at all the previous comments.............

Every time I try and review this awful, awful pub the post is removed. Why? No wonder all the posts below are positive apart from the first. This place is just unspeakably bad with bouncers who think they're in the CIA and the same atmosphere as a third rate Wetherspoons pub (which is of course exactly what it is) but with hugely inflated prices.
k - 18 May 2004 13:23 |
We all went down here saturday night, I have to say it was packed out and there was a fantastic atmosphere.People were friendly even the bar staff! Maybe the Arsenal result had something to do with it but this place gets a thumbs from me....... And I have to agree some fit men who know how to dress too! Cheap drinks! What more could you ask for? Come down!!!!!!!!!
Allison & Emma-Jo - 18 May 2004 02:00 |
Not bad for a Weatherspoons bar, good lookers in here too, then again it is Angel where women have time and money to enhance their appearance. Give it a go Lads......... ;-)
Mike - 13 May 2004 22:01 |
