please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I went to five - and in my opinion, this was the best on offer in Wokingham.

A Wadworth house - it was immaculate, had an entertaining quiz and decent beer - with the full range represented.

Large pub, surprisingly quiet on a Friday lunchtime. Excellent attentive service, good selection of interesting meals and of Wadworth's ales. Well worth a visit.

I understand that Clive,thelong-serving licensee, has moved on and there is new management in this Wadworth's pub. Good range of their products including one from their "mini-brewery" Green Shoots. Beer was OK but it was quiet afternoon so I need to go back when it is a bit busier to get a better idea of how it is doing after the change.

Went in last night 30th Dec. Good selection of Wadworth beers but out of the 2 I tried (Swordfish and Horizon) both were cloudy and eggy to the point where I was unable to finish either of them.
Beastie_boy - 31 Dec 2012 10:49
Visited last Friday night. Need to get there at 11am to get a table or seat. Had to drink out in the garden which was fresh to say the least. Good atmosphere and very good Wadworth selection of beers.
Beer_Spotter - 30 Apr 2012 13:09
Beer is always good but as has been said is pricey and sometimes the staff can be a bit offhand. It is still worth a visit however. Wadworth's range plus usually one guest and a couple of beer festivals per year.
mcroyal - 26 Apr 2012 10:41
The best selection of ales in Wokingham, which is more than can be said for the prices and service. Very expensive and was felt to feel like I was not welcome there by the bar staff, which is a shame as its a nice pub with good ales.
Roy9379 - 5 Feb 2012 14:14
Went in on Friday night. Busy as usual which is always a good sign. A good selection of ales on the bar including Wadworths - Swordfish that I had and was served well. The main problem I find about this place is the pricy drinks. Shame about the previous comments regarding the landlord. I've always found Clive to be friendly but a little nutty.
Beer_Spotter - 29 Jan 2012 19:40
I gave it a 1 because it was open but really avoid the food and the rude servers. Needs a visit from anyone that knows anything about how to train people in dealing with the public. Rude, for the sake of it, probably. Imagine what they would be like if popular - unbearable.

Great pub, great staff, although "fools" are not suffered gladly ...
monty - 20 Mar 2011 17:41
Could be a very good pub.... good beer and regular guest ales, a nice garden and all in a great location in the town centre. Just a shame the landlords and staff have not had any customer service training. Sarcasm and rudeness are unfortunately the norm and to be witnessed most days.... I will not be hurrying back there - plenty of other pubs in Wokingham where customers are treated with civility and manners.

Good crowd and quite nice garden but expensive and mediocre food and pricey drinks. Commented that my food was not heated through properly and nothing was done about it. Manager can be extremely rude and foul-mouthed for no apparent reason as we witnessed recently. Not child friendly.

Rating would be much higher under new management.

Nice pub, good beer, shame about the Landlord. I used to drink in here quite often until for some reason unbeknown to me I fell out of favour with the landlord. I was still serverd but would have to wait until everyone else at the bar had been even if I had been waiting longer and all the friendly banter had gone? Talking to other Wokingham people I'm not the first or last to have been treated this way. It's a shame as it's a lovely pub with a great garden, I won't be going back for some time.

This is still the best pub in Wokingham which can be proved by looking at the number of awards bestowed upon it hanging on the opposite wall from the bar. Also the only one I frequent when I can though not as often as I would like. Staff are always chatty and helpful. A Good wadsworth range as always this week with St. George and Dragon being very popular plus a guest beer called ttt. Thankfully no sky football shown here nor kids allowed so its a more relaxed, laidback atmosphere. Thanks guys and see you next week.
dave2112 - 14 Mar 2010 11:20
Still one of the most popular pubs in Wokingham. Guest beers seem to be getting more adventurous with a couple of Bateman's beers on for my last visit (XXXB and Summer Swallow) as well as the standard Wadworth range.
metrology_man - 4 Sep 2009 15:01
Still serving a cracking pint of Wadworth (plus guest - York centurions Ghost on Sunday). It's getting a bit expensive though, even for Wokingham. You won't get much (if any) change from a tenner for three random pints.

Still, it's a great pub with a cracking garden
Quinno - 13 Jul 2009 22:13
Nice pub with great Beer, but overpriced
pinkyroyal - 15 Jun 2009 20:13
If your in the 'click' here your ok.
You have to appreciate sarcasm, accept average food at above average prices, and GREAT beer at over-inflated prices.
If its busy when you go in, go elsewhere.

carpcatcher - 18 Feb 2009 10:02
I liked it a lot - ticked most of my boxes:- multi-room layout, excellent 6X served flat and a sensible beer range, proper pub food (not cheap) and really nice staff. Hard to fault.
mtaylor40 - 13 Jan 2009 21:45
Well xpubboss, think that could be sour grapes we moved into the area recently found the pub great fun a little crazy at times, otherwise lots of fun great mix of people
realdrinker1 - 22 Dec 2008 23:35
Went on a very busy music night. They just could not cope. Booked a table for food, wish we had not bothered. If you can't cope with food, don't do it when you are busy. Rude staff, obviously copy example of manager.......
Beer is good though. Go on a quiet night when they can cope.
xpubboss - 19 Nov 2008 11:02
First of all the negatives, it's a bit pricey 3.25 for a pint of Holden's Special and the service is slow, that said, the beer quality is excellent and the outdoor seating area is very pleasant.
Abteilung - 28 Sep 2008 21:47
Licensee Clive has just celebrated his 10 year anniversary at the helm. The beer is still good and the beer festivals are excellent.

Agree that this is an awkwardly shaped pub - it's the lack of space between the bar and toilet doors that does it. Which is fine most days but on Friday and Saturday nights it can get a bit difficult.

Still, it's a worthy visit!
Quinno - 12 Sep 2008 11:00
The 'Tav' is a very awkward shaped pub, little rooms with very little seating, and the bar in the corridor making it difficult getting in and out, getting served or going to the toilet.

Seems policy here to have only one member of staff even on busy nights, and very expensive to drink in.

In the summer however, this place becomes an attractive proposition. A very large garden and good quality garden, frequent BBQ's, and an outside bar (that unfortunately only occasionally is open).

Poor layout and slow service make this a bit of a let down.
Extended_Phenotype - 19 Mar 2008 17:20
Known for the best range of real ales in the town, they had a mini-festival of porters and stouts on when we visited on Saturday just gone. Very good range of beers from across the country, all in good nick, some served direct from the barrels set up at one side of the bar, although they were served under pressure, despite being corretly racked on a small stillage. What's wrong with pure gravity dispense, people?
Friendly and efficient staff, in a pub that exploded into life around 7.30pm and became very hectic very quickly. Being Australia Day, this saw the place decorated with inflatable Australiana and the Antipodean barman was all done up for the occasion, but the flag he had tied around his neck caused a few problems with trailing over people's glasses as he moved around. Better off without it, cobber.

Since the smoking ban, it's a hell of a shame that the Tavern has allowed smoking throughout its huge garden. I could find nowhere at all to sit outside away from acrid cigarette smoke on a rare warm August lunchtime. (But that goes for most pub gardens since July). So the interior is now fully smoke free, whereas they previously had it nicely segregated.

Definitely a reduced rating and much less appealing for a non-smoker.
boozyoldgit - 21 Aug 2007 19:33
Probably consistently the best pub in Wokingham, beer quality is always good and there is often a Mild on too. Recently there have beer draught Belgian Beers and a good selection of German bottled beer for the Belgian/Lager Promotion. Not at all a wine bar!
Godrinker - 7 Jul 2007 23:01
Wadworth's shop with ale indecent condition. Tried JCB, 6X, summersault, jj Henry's, Bishops tipple and duechers IPA as well as the Erdinger Weiss bier. All in decent shape without being 8 or more out of 10.

Sat in garden under cover.

Not bad but then not good. Large garden for summer. Decent without the wow factor.
bedfont - 14 Jun 2007 16:41
Has couple of fruit machines & quiz machine. Has 2 large TV screens - 1 of which is in a small secluded area where only a few people would be able to sit/stand in.

Beers are good. Has a couple of random ales, the usual lagers, plus Erdinger Weissbier.
Clean and comfortable pub with friendly bar staff.
They were not doing food when I was there (from about 4 on a saturday) but was told I could bring food in.

All in all, a nice pub to down many of those forementioned weissbiers.

LowenBeerHold - 9 May 2007 14:09
Seem to have got a grip on the guest ale of late, was pretty static for a while.

Had a smashing pint of Xmas Pud there yesterday.

Lots of festivals coming and going, ale fest just gone was excellent, and there is a foreign lager fest in January, including Kwak etc. Excellent.

I can't relate to beerPrincess' comments. Trendy wine bar??? Nothing of the sort. Don't know what trend you're following, beerPrincess....

I've been back a few times and always get a large, piping hot basket of chips with my sarnie. I hope you took them back for a replacement. The bar staff are really willing and efficient.

Summersault has been on for a while and is a good pint. Looking forward to the November festival. Still the best pub in Wokingham.
boozyoldgit - 30 Sep 2006 22:13
I have heard amazing things about this place, but wasn't overly impressed.

The beer quality was ok, but not as fantastic as I had been lead to believe. It feels like a trendy wine bar.

I went for food on a Friday lunchtime, which took forever (sarnies) and the chips were stone cold.
beerPrincess - 4 Aug 2006 12:07
Still doing a good job here, usually 5 Wadworth ales on plus Amstell and Chimay if that's your bag.

Nice big garden out the back, with a bar for a busy Friday or Saturday. Also has a table service on when it's busy so you can avoid the arduous trek to the (admittedly stupidly small) bar, which is fab.

Good pub.
Quinno - 21 Jul 2006 23:28
Have returned to The Tavern a couple of times in the evening and it is just delightful. Pleasant people, relaxed atmosphere, good beer. Best in Wokingham - by far!
boozyoldgit - 26 Mar 2006 16:39
Nice little pub. Can feel a little cramped when busy due to the lack of space but owners do well to maximise the small amount of space available.

A wide variety of good beer served regularly.

ballie22 - 16 Feb 2006 12:01
For a non-smoker, this is a super pub in the town centre. Good range of ales, plentiful plate of food, relaxing, comfortable no smoking rooms, newspapers always available. Smokers were also catered for at the main bar-room. Nice and friendly. I will definitely return.
boozyoldgit - 24 Oct 2005 20:21
A bit like a TARDIS a lot bigger when you get in than it looks from the outside, with a nice beer garden.

Good range of ale, and though one of them was on the turn the guy behind the bar immediately went to check it out when I told him, so credit there.

Definately one of the best in Wokingham at the moment.
Quinno - 11 Sep 2005 16:38
The BST is always busy, so it takes a long time to get served. I've been moderately insulted when I asked to change my wine because it tasted unpleasant, too; generally I find the staff a bit offhand.

I like the large non-smoking section and the heated garden, but it wouldn't be my first choice of pub in Wokingham.
kitty - 31 Oct 2004 16:34
It serves Hoegaarden for one! and has a relaxed atmosphere. Nice decor and recently refurbed garden/patio area.
Very busy on a friday/saturday and as the pub itself is quite small tends to get overcrowded.
JJ Akumba - 9 Oct 2004 01:02
Although this pub is very pleasant inside I think it should be avoided like the plague. I have never come across such ignorant bar staff. The 2 tall men insulted me when I pointed out that I had been given the wrong wine. It was deeply embarrassing in front of my work colleagues. (Liz - Apr 2004)

I love this place.... it has a very warm, welcoming feel. As for the garden, it's an oasis! They have bands on a Thursday and a group of regulars who provide non stop entertainment.

I LOVE IT xx
Mel - 29 Apr 2004 12:26
Fantastic Atmosphere, friendly locals, decent vodka and wonderful staffI love it, I must do, Ive spent 6K in four months. Clive & Beth we love you!!!

I think this is the best pub in Wokingham, always a nice atmosphere and on a warm summer evening there is nowhere better to be than the beer garden. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the areas at the front of the pub are great for having a quiet drink in the week or its more lively at the weekends. The food is also very good.
Steph - 23 Dec 2003 20:07
Expensive drinks, slow staff, tiny toilets - how this pub is popular is beyond me.
