now it's a new pub/bar called 'The Standard'.
|
Now closed, around a year after it re-opened.
|
Apparently this pub has re-opened, although I've not been there yet.
|
Has this place closed down or is it having a refurbishment?
|
Completely deserted on a Sunday night, just a very bored-looking barman looking at his watch. Only one handpump working, serving an OK pint of Butcombe Bitter. Almost made the Litten Tree across the road look a better bet - it was that bad - and thus doomed, I should imagine...

what has happened? where is "The Hob" as we all knew and loved? the place now is a dirty, chav filled tomb! i remember having to que up to get in the place at the weekends, now they have to pay people to go and if you do venture in, its like being at a toddlers teaparty! the staff are rude sulky little brats who cant even dress themselves! bring back the old crew, with the sexy barstaff that actually treated you as a human being and not a old aged teacher. this place should either be burnt down and laid to rest, or it needs a very big shake up. a reburb wouldnt hurt, and get back the old staff who were the best staff in the world, bring back the real ales and food, and bring back THE OLD HOB!! please for the sake of mankind and over 30 people who dont wanna feel old but want to act it!!

This pub has gone way downhill since I last commented. The majority of the new staff are complete posers, the atmosphere has died...and what's up with the jukebox which plays dance and indie?! It's meant to be a rock pub! What happened to the decent MP3 selection? What happened to the live music?
It's a shame as I can tell the landlord is investing money into it. The mounted fans are an excellent idea, as were the tea lights on the table (which seem to have disappeared). He needs to revert back to the same music, atmosphere and bar staff he used over a year ago or face losing even more clients.

Foul Guinness.

saturday daytime trade is non existant (this pub in in the high street) - other pubs seem to do well, complacent managment perhaps ? poor choice of beers maybe..
|
I went to this pub when i was a student at bedford college, it was the most student friendly pub and at the time it was run by steve and alex. The music has always been a big attraction of this pub but the main selling point has got to be the clientel. Very rarely is there any trouble in the Hob and it has got to be the only pub on the high street that is not infested with chav scum. Although I do not believe the daytime trade is as good as it once was the Hobgoblin is still one of the best nightspots in town.
|
since the new landlord has taken over, the place has gained a brilliant atmosphere, great barstaff, and i've heard recently that every thursday sees a band or two play. not too keen on the doorstaff, but it's nice to know that bedford finally has a real rock pub.

this is a great little pub in the cultural backwater of bedford high street. great range of beers from all over the world ( i think about 30 different ones!!}. its really friendly and the music is great. i love it here because its a chav free zone and only the upper end of the "townie" brigade frequent the place. keep up the great work guys!!

great pub. lots of good music.some live bands at the weekend. they do snake bite and black which is unusual for a high street pub.no food but there is a chicken cottage across the road and they let you bring it in.

A new management team had certainly shaked the place up.Not only have they cleaned the place thoroughly, but also given the pub a new lick of paint, changed the drink selections and started to sell old traditional Hobgoblinn ales. All draft is now served ice cold and in clean new glasses. Spirits and mixers are offered not only in a "Slim Jim" glass, but with ice and lemon. If they started to do lunch food again, that would be the icing on the cake. Highly recommend this public house to those young at heart.

i love this place. Every week there is something new happening. The staff make you welcome and the music is great, even if it is just off the jukebox.Massive selction on drinks, they had 5 different types of vodka!!!! Not a pub full of young people with attitude...not a hoodie in sight! Highly recommend to any "old skool" rock heads!!!

a totally great pub. new bottled beers in, a whole weekend of live bands, some a bit bad but some who will go somewhere and would be great to see again. pub clean, friendly and fun. GREAT BEERS>>>GREAT ATMOSPHERE>>>>A GREAT PUB!!!!! will tell all my mates.. but beware they are extra hot on under age drinkers, on the door and at the bar. it is an 18 plus only place but well worth it. GREAT PLACE TO BE

New landlord, big changes in there. You might not recognise the place now with the several layers of grime removed :o)

Not a great pub, smokey again full of rowdy students, avoid on friday and saturday nights not as bad as the Litten Tree though.
|
used to be a great pub but the tradition of hobgoblins has diminished over the last year or so. the staff are cool and you do get served quickly but all this is let down by the lack of cleaning that obviously doesnt happen and the manager who is never seen without a pint in his hand,(to put it politely). oh, and the brewers of hobgoblin ale are no longer (and havent been for quite some time) part of the hobgoblin chain of pubs!

Always a great atmosphere here - brilliant staff & good beers. (They do regularly have Hobgoblin ales!)
|
Lively and friendly place only let down by the limited range of beers and the fact they have no Hobgoblin ales despite Hobgoblin owning the place.
