please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A bit of an odd one. Beer very tasty and good views over harbour as others have noted. But an overpowering smell of bar food, which really put us off from dwelling. Much better than gods waiting room next door mind.

This small Tudor style pub nestled in the corner of Whitby has a wonderful view of the harbour and entrance to the ocean.
Not surprisingly it can get very busy but the staff seem to cope well.

It has a good range of ales but the food appears a bit rushed at times.

It is worth noting the beer is very much overpriced. 3.50 for a pint of mild ale is just outrageous.

Nice pub with people tending to eat more than drink. Great views over the harbour and decent enough ale.

The only pub I know of that asks for the money before you get a drink! This is unacceptable. The prices are way over the top, and the staff are terrible. We walked out and went elsewere!
A pub to avoid, we shall never go here again. They depend on the tourists so they can rip them off. Avoid!

Overpriced drinks as it is in the tourist trap. Food very poor indeed. 4 different meals ordered shared in common very poor quality. Pub nice enough in itself but in common with all the whitby pubs I tried, relying on thirsty/hungry tourists who wont be back to complain.

Black Sheep, Deuchars IPA and Directors ale available here, all in reasonable condition. As said before, its the views over the harbour that make it special

Very much a tourist trap. Serves average pub grub. Has your usual real ales on without anything out of the ordinary but never much to write home about. Has some great views across the harbour.

One of our favourite pubs in Whitby. Best during the day when not too busy, as you can peacefully while away the afternoon at one of the lovely window seats overlooking the harbour.

Pleasant in the afternoon when not too busy but in the evening it was very busy and the staff were snappy and irritable. Had a below par evening meal here which was disappointing after we'd heard good reports. The beer was kept well but there are plenty of other pubs in the area that do the whole package better.

Went there on tuesday evening and we had a great pint of Black Sheep.Funny, welcoming barman who kept us entertained.Tons of single malts on offer great views and it was busy.FAR better than the 'pub' next door!!!

Another excellent pub in Whitby, they sell real ale and others the food looked excellent theres also a quiet good whisky bar, this pub overlooks the harbour but your lucky to get a seat near the window, my only small problem was there was sport on the tv and the reception was poor, but thats all I could fault, great pub been in three times in the last two months always a good pint.

Nice when it isn't packed out, staff a bit rude in the past, nice views.

Great views across the harbour if you're lucky enough to get a seat near the window. Three of four beers on tap plus Strongbow cider.
Menu looked reasonable although we didn't try it ourselves.
Staff seemed more interested in sorting out their rota's than actually serving.

I found the pub to be a delight, but they maybe because i was sat on a bar stool facing a number of old photographs on the wall, having to explain to JB why all people seemed to look grimey in c1890 photos!

There was a choice of real ales and the beer we had was fine.

Other points raised here are justified. As Staaly says, seats are hard to come by and we visited on a Monday daytime - and it is for families and set out for food.

I would return quite happily, maybe after researching grimey people in old photographs a bit more

Enjoyed this place, nice view on to the river heading into the sea. Large area that would be suitable for dining. Around 4 handpumps on offering Spitfire & Speckled Hen amongst others.

This pub is for families. It is full of little kids. It is really hard to get a seat in the evenining. OK if you like this, but I walked in and left immediately on this visit. Have been in before at lunchtime. Food is ok and beer is good. But it is not what I would call a 'great' pub. It all depends on what you want.

Called in at the weekend and had Landlord- A1. The manager can be a miserable sod though....no offence, you may be ready for a holiday. Top pub!!
beerbob66 - 6 Nov 2007 16:50
After a recent visit I found the ales on offer in top condition. A good range available. The only problem was how busy the place was, but what can you expect with a good pub on a weekend?!
smileyfarmerboy - 7 Aug 2007 16:00
I was a bit concerned after reading the previous reviews on the ale quality. I had the Timothy Taylor's Golden Best and have to say it was in perfect condition.

I echo the most recent commentators on this pub - the views and food are excellent - though the beer is in decline from when I last had an evening here a few years ago. I have to say that considering it was a bank holiday weekend though, the staff were politeness personified.
angelus1981 - 16 Apr 2007 16:46
The food is still good value and yes the views are great but the beer quality has fallen to a very low level. No longer worth going to for real ale.

As a regular visiter, I change my mind about this pub every time the only thing consistant about this pub is the food. pretty decent!
I have noticed the staff can get a bit ratty under preasure, beer can be average and someone needs to tell visitors theres more than one pub in Whitby don't all turn up at once.
adam2672 - 21 Jun 2006 19:20
Yes the views are super but there's far better real ale in Whitby in pubs that are nowhere near as crowded.
whitbycrawler - 3 Feb 2006 23:03
Best pub in Whitby - that's all!
lupus - 20 May 2005 09:13
Excellent accommodation! Friendly staff and the best harbour views in Whitby. Lots of interesting / rare beverages behind the bar if you look carefully.
Linael - 7 Feb 2005 21:59
I visit Whitby a few time a year and this pub is one of the best! Excellent views over the harbour and normally a good range of real ales - however was a bit disappointed that the Black Sheep was not on tap on my last visit. Food is excellent large portions and good value for money. Only critism is that it can get very smokey which isn't the best when your trying to eat - but still nice place to visit.

been going in the duke for eight years now.great pub, good food, good staff, lovely atmosphere.always quite busy more so at weekends but dont let that put you off.
rick monks - 21 May 2004 12:50
Excellent food, fantastic real ale and a great view of the harbour.Friendly staff and welcoming locals.Have been going to Whitby twice a year for the last 10 years and the first pint of the weekend is always in here John Smith's or one of the guest ales.
One criticism, the recently introduced families and couples only policy on a Saturday night
boddies_drinker - 7 Oct 2003 15:40
Good beer, pleasant welcoming pub. Food good and value for money. Views across the harbour from the windows. Very popular with the locals.
