Lovely "local" pub, great choice of real ales and doing their best in the present difficulties.

I've had a couple of recent visits to the Guest House, whilst in Southport. My first was in October. It's still a really down-to-earth town pub with multiple rooms, where you can either engage in conversation with like-minded people or find a quiet corner for a touch of solitude to perhaps read a book. Ales on my October visit were Acorn Phantasm, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, Courage Directors, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Thwaite's Wainwright & Lightfoot, Adnams Bitter & Caledonian Deuchars IPA.

Traditional friendly excellent real ale pub. Best in Southport by some way in my view.
Good traditional pub, pleasant staff, friendly customers and well kept ales, the Westwood 'Cheshire Cat' & Southport Brewery 'British Gold' were both nice.
A really great pub in a quiet area just off the main street. A proper traditional pub with, 3 separate rooms, a tiled floor, dark stained wooden panelling everywhere, lights on mini-chandeliers, a bar with glass panels above head height (giving the impression you are being served through a hatch. Walls are decorated with such things as cigarette cards, brasses and period advertising.
And to top it all off there is a great range of beers as well. I thing I counted 11 handpumps – including Theakstons Old Peculier. I had Palmers Copper ale which was very nice. I was also offered a set of third tasters if I couldn’t make up my mind.
I didn’t eat, but the menu looked very interesting with things like pies, jacket potatoes and sandwiches at very reasonable prices. I will definitely eat there next time.
8/10 – surely the best pub in town !

Good pub which seems to offer well served beer, and the tasters given by staff was a nice touch. Worth a visit.
Super pub - a proper pub with bar and lounge ;wood panelling and a very nice feel to it. Interesting name and attractive frontage. Sunday afternoon - not packed but quite a few drinker in the bar and very friendy and helpful staff - help yourself to the cheese and biscuits I was told! It appears to be tied to S&N (Heinekin range of beers in the main) but I enjoyed a half of the local Southport Mild which was very good as was the March Hare from Pheonix. I could have easily stayed longer here as it is just the kind of pub I like. (Just off the top end of Lord Street near the roundabout and a fair walk from the station- but worth the effort).
Good range of real ales, and bar staff happy to offer tasters, describe flavours and make recommendations.
Pleasant atmosphere, well worth an evening if you're in Southport.

interesting previous comment which I totally agree with. My mate from Southport loves coming down to Devon to drink sparkler free ale served as a natural, living product should be. The Guest House is still the best pub in Southport though. Nice people and good banter. You can always ask them to take the sparkler off.
Rated this pub 9 for the last twelve months until a recent visit when I was served Butcombe Bitter (brewed just down the hill from Bristol Airport) through a sparkler. That is no way to serve a west country beer designed to be pulled straight off the barrel with no pipes or beer engines in between never mind frothing all the life out of it. The other (northern) beers were excellent even with a sparkler on but please landlady ask the brewery how it should be served first!

The best pub in Southport by miles. It was a little difficult to find (probably because I'm not from Southport :-D)
Excellent barstaff, well kept beer and a lovely smoking area. Top notch.
Just a quickie to clarify westbound - was not criticising west country beers just the fact that in the west country they are often overpriced and poorly kept. Guest House my favourite pub in North West

I reguarly visit Southport from Devon and love this place. The staff are always friendly and theres usually a healthy mix of clientelle. Always a good range of beers at keen prices. I disagree with "The Writer" though ( previous comment ). The Westcountry beers ( 0" Hanlons, Moor, Branoc, RCH,Otter, Teignworthy,Exe Valley etc ) are amonst the finest in the UK. Anyway that takes nothing away from The Guesthouse. Great pub to enjoy well kept decent beer and friendly banter.
If more pubs were like this there would be fewer closing down! Excellent beers, knowledgeable bar staff and good prices (especially impressive to someone who is used to 3.40 a pint in the West Country for generally less well kept beer)
The best of 7 pubs we tried in Southport yesterday. Locals and staff were friendly and the pub has much more character inside than many of the others we visited. The beer range is also good - Phoenix Spotland Gold, Partners Spike's On T'Way, Theakston Lightfoot & Bitter, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Oakwell Dark Mild, Youngs Special & Brains Legends Ale. My only criticism was that there was no real cider.

Found this fantastic pub today and it was a welcome site when I found Theakston old peculier on draft. Which in my opinion is one of the best ales in the UK. Also sells many other guest beers. The whole pub had great character and was really welcoming and very clean. The beer garden was a sun trap and well decked out with flowers and hanging baskets. We will return very soon to the best pub in Southport. thank you

Atmospheric, multi-roomed pub with constantly changing guest ales. Most enjoyable of the Southport pubs that we visited.
Must admit, the name put me off and I nearly didn't bother trying it but was really glad I did. I was expecting a hotel bar and found a really good pub . Great beer well kept and a good choice - 8 handpulls I think. The bar staff were efficient and amiable. .

Fantastic choice of ales on our many visits over New Year. Ale superbly served and kept.
Without doubt the best pub we've visited in Southport.
Does not get any better than this.
This is a first class pub, good beers friendly staff, well managed ,my wife and i stayed in a holiday cottage in Castle Street and spent some time in this friendly pub,the customers treat you as one of them, speakin to you not making you feel an outsider, thank's to all at this public house.
I have visited this pub in the past and have been satisfied but on a recent visit in May with only 4 other customers in the pub and all seated. I waited 5 minutes with 3 members of staff behind the bar all interested in talking to each other than serving. My wife and I left after making it known to them that I was far from happy and will not visit the pub in future.

Amazing choice of real ales & secluded outdoor drinking area. Bar staff are quality too.
Not girl friendly
Any place that serves Deuchars IPA will always get a visit from me! A very popular pub in a side road just off Lord Street. About 8 rotating guest real ales with an imaginative choice including porter. I can see why CAMRA rate this pub. Traditional & unspoilt with high ceilings & 3 large rooms this type of pub is hard to find these days. Only downside is that my partner likes Belgian beer & they didn't have any. She chose a glass of ros & apparently it was not good.

Fab pub
Brilliant drinker's pub. Huge selection of ales- the best in Southport- and plenty interesting nooks and crannies.
A brilliant pub, off the main drag enough not to get the scallies, with a great beer choice and all mine, through the week, were in great condition. Easily, for me, the best pub in Southport, despite (or because of) it not doing any food other than rolls. Three distinct drinking areas plus a 'patio' (we'll draw a veil over that!), we loved it on each of our visits. I would go back to Southport just to re visit it, not sure why it isn't in the current GBG.
Great pub with tonnes of real ales, although a bad pint last time i was there made me rough for the rest of the weekend
One of the best pubs I've been in, and a superb selection of real ales.
Excellent pub, lively but with plenty of room to sit down early Saturday evening. Excellent choice of beers, many from micros, in excellent condition and fairly priced. Splendid.
An excellent pub with a choice of cask beers, several proper rooms - like pubs used to be. Deservedly popular.
A very good pint but not enough full of standmeups.
Don't be fooled by the name - this is no boarding house but a smart pub away from the "pub circuit". Nice to find a pub which hasn't been opened out in some ghastly refurbishment. Altogether a pleasant drinking experience.
Top pub!
did have some odd beers but was packed at 7 30 need to get in early to get a good spot nice pub nice staff just need to get a good larger.
Just about the only real pub left in Southport centre. Typical Victorian town centre boozer. Excellent beer and a welcoming atmosphere.

Best pub in Southport - one of the few not to have been turned into a restaurant! If you are after food look elsewhere, but if you want a good, unpretentious old-fashioned town centre boozer look no further.

Great range of beers. Always plenty of guest ones. High on CAMRA's recommended list.
