Large-ish pub which actually defines the eating and drinking areas (we sat on the boundary table). Not a bad pub for it's size/owner etc had a decent drop of one of those Formby brews.

Certainly quite impressive for a Greene King pub. It had a good range of 11 ales on, plus Old Rosie cider. The pub is a large affair. If it has had a refurb, it has at least done it tastefully. Ales were well kept and service is good. Although we didn't find out about the 10p per pint CAMRA discount until the 3rd round. Ales were Bowland Oak, George Wright Blue Moon & Pipe Dream, Ruddles Best, Peerless Dark Arts & Triple Blond, Sunny Republic Shark Head, Ossett Silver King, Thornbridge Sequoia, Red Willow Headless & Greene King IPA. Nice place, but a bit out of the way to make a regular haunt.

This pub is advertising a beer and cider festival 21 -28 July 2014.

Extensively refurbished in 2012, the Freshie is probably Greene King's (though the brewery tries to hide the fact it is their pub, going for the freehouse feel) finest pub.
In the region of 14 real ales on the bar, mainly from independent breweries, with a few GK products, and very well sourced- Liverpool Organic, Leeds, Oakham etc.
The function room has been incorporated into the pub and is mainly used for diners. A dartboard is retained as is plenty of tables for those who just want a drink.
Dogs welcome, children welcome, food served all day, regular beer festivals, weekly quiz night, 1/3 pint boards available, friendly and attentive staff. The Freshie shows what Greene King is capable of when it allows itself to try something different.
Well done to all those involved.

Todays Liverpool Echo reports that a man died following a 'disturbance' at this pub last weekend.

Love this pub. Where else can you get so much choice. A proper pub. Staff great, Managers great, Atmosphere great.

Large pub with single room that benfs aroud the building, huge choice of excellent beers (and Greene King) with Titanic Mild a house beer. Full every evening, can be difficult to find - 5 minutes walk from station, or if driving turn off Formby Road at the BP garage. In a very affluent area (Gerrard lives up the road) so good enough for pub haters like mrBean to stoop themselves to visit (loud swearing?). Comments in other reviews about the staff are fair - most are efficient and impersonal, none are useless. But if you were a regular in a pub you'd expect recognition and possibly conversation from the staff, so you must expect a degree of indifference when you visit other places - this is not an unfriendly pub.

Brilliant night at Guitar Club. So much talent, open mic session anyone can get up who's brave enough. Fantastic range of ales from all over the country, excellently kept. Not just one pub but 2 pubs in one. Function room has lots going on in it now a days, used for private parties as well as different events open to the public. Would recomend to everyone who likes real ales. Brilliant ales, brilliant staff, brilliant pub. Thank you for some great times.

Hi I Just wanted to say that my wife and I had lunch here today and the staff are great very welcoming and the food is second to none( Steak and Ale pie )thank you for making our visit to Formby a little more than just a somber (raining)one our reason for visiting was on our way to St Peter's to see the Mill Hill Father's and the new building at Herbert house.

Visited in October 06. Real ale was first class, food ok. Barmaid communicated pleasantly enough with locals but we strangers were made to feel unwelcome. Why not serve people in the order in which they arrive at the bar?

Visited today after reading the reveiws here and travelling over 100 miles. Kids not permitted at all inside except to use the loos but loud swearing is permitted throughout. At first the staff appeared to be a bit arrogant and troubled by the slightest request of others. However I received a professional enough service and the food was very good. The beer was also good as I expected for a real ale pub but the big suprise was it was very clean and tidy, customers too look like they'd made an effort. Certainly not the usual scruffy miserable, roll-up smoking weirdy beards you get in most real ale pubs. Worth visiting if you are ever in the Formby area.

Grew up locally left 15 years ago, I still visit 3 or 4 times year. Good overall pub, excellent beer, food untried. Service friendly enough but barstaff WILL serve a known local over you everytime, not a fluke, happened to other people I know.....

Brilliant pub. No kids, no music, just quality real ales. Barmaid Ann best in Merseyside by far. Worked there for 30 years and worth her weight in gold. Perhaps anonymous is person who ate whole meal, then asked for money back! She is not miserable, just fast, efficient and a great judge of character.

12 real ales always on including: Boddingtons Bitter, Deuchars IPA, Castle Eden, Draught Bass, Tim Taylors Landlord & Guest beers. One of the best pubs I've ever been too!
|
I remember this pub from years ago when Ronnie Ross was the manager, I loved it. Sad to say it has gone downhill fast since then. More of a place to be for the Formby/Freshfield set than a pub to enjoy.

Real ale all the way. Great Ambience. Footy when required. What a choice, all year round beer festival.
