Sun Inn, Llangollenback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
It was Sunday night we were here and it was quiet as to be expected. There was a reasonable but not great choice of beers but what we had was good quality. Lovely open fire.

Can't believe some of these reviews or that it's in the Good Beer Guide. Not a good experience here Saturday 15th June. Thick as the proverbial girl behind the bar with no interpersonal skills and no idea of what she was serving on the pumps. Asked for my beers and and all I got was a befuddled look and rudely delivered "what?". Asked again and met with the same. In the end I just pointed and repeated the amount required. She seemed to get this and poured the pints. Both were very nicely kept, but the experience at the bar just made us want to quaff them as quickly as possible and move on to a different pub.

Lovely Ales 10 out of 10

Brilliant!

The staff were most pleasant and the landlord was there milling about the customers, most jovial. There were six beers on, the four I had were in excellent condition, I stuck on the phoenix white tornado, super! it was vibrant but friendly. I was surprised at the quality of the band. Exclusive, most good quality place I've been to on my visit. Only pies served for hot food. It is an absolute must see for llangollen. Kind of traditional, nice out door space, very well done.

Cracking pub, live music a regular feature. Six real ales, the five I had were well kept and lines are cleaned between casks. Lots of small tables, stone floor, friendly. Loos look like they have just been refurbished - very nice!

Outstanding in every sense, there really is something for everyone. Attention right down to the very last detail. Couldn't believe it when I was told the pub has been totally revamped over many years by the current landlord. He was putting some shelves up when I visited. It looks entirely traditional apart from the loos which have to be mentioned as they are superb, automatic lights and flush and a hand dryer that dries your hands! delightful trad wooden bar, slate floors, stained glass, fire places, beams. continental beers including fruit beers, lots of lagers, 6 bitters, large selection of whisky and rums. Chicken curry, top notch. Wife raved about the fresh orange. Games, traditional and modern, live music, Cargo, very good rock band, great beer garden with covered area and heaters with a TV outside. Was really quite peaceful there in the day time, no surprise it got busy in the evening, nice to see all ages in there, great atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Visited this pub with friends for the last few years in Feb. Always superb. Great bands on Fri/Sat. But on the other hand, visit at tea time and settle down by the fireside(s) for a quiet pint or two and then watch the pub transform to almost a night club atmosphere as the evening wears on. It's all things to all people. Be sure to visit the loos for a go on the worlds most powerful, (and noisy), hand drier........really! All credit to the landlord for buying this place and apparently making it his lifetimes work to improve it without destroying what a pub should be.

If I was to design the perfect pub, it wouldn't be far removed from The Sun. Great beer, great music - live and jukebox. Live sport if you want it, though easy to avoid if you don't. Friendly staff and dog friendly. Perfick!

Spent a couple of hours in here recently. Decent enough pub with a good, vibrant atmosphere. The type of place you can go for a proper old fashioned night out. Shame that the barstaff insisted on using plastic glasses despite there being plenty of proper ones still available. One of the better pubs in Llangollen though. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Llangollen's must visit pub for the ale drinker. 6 handpumps. If you can tear yourself away from the sublime Shropshire Gold there is always Thwaites Bitter, plus 3 guests and a real cider. Betwixt featured heavily on my visit and Sunlight was excellent. Large bar room with a slate floor, excellent roaring real fire and traditional furnishings. Up the top there's a games room with a pinball machine, pool table and table football. This turns into a stage for the pub's frequent music nights- I can assure that they are crowded! Also a snug behind the bar with a wood burner that opens out into a large covered smokers area. The jukebox is fantastic incidentally, and newspapers are provided. There are also pub dogs that are also boisterous! It seems the pub has been in trouble with the council over noise, although local residents have rallied round. See how that goes. In the meantime, visit, it's brilliant!

Nice street corner pub on the busy A5 road, approx 3/4 mile south of the centre of Llangollen.
Attractive art nouveau coloured glass doors lead to a single bar, traditionally furnished and with a slate floor. There's some old style school bench seats retaining original inkwell slots which will appeal to those nostalgia buffs amongst us. On the left of the bar is a stage, which looks like an extension to the original pub, which is used for live music, mainly on Fridays and saturdays.
The pub is a GBG regular and proudly displays a certificate awarded to it as Welsh Pub of the Year 2009 by Chester and South Clwyd CAMRA. There's 6 handpumps and on my recent early evening visit, these were serving Phoenix West Coast IPA, Facers North Star Porter, Thwaites Original, Lymstone Brewery Ein Stein, Salopian Shropshire Gold and Betwixt Sunlight. The Phoenix West Coast IPA ( 2.80p and 4.6% ) was a fine typically hoppy IPA. Other customers spoke highly of the Betwixt Sunlight.
If you're staying in Llangollen, you should make an effort to do this one, although you might want to avoid live music nights, which I was told are rather noisy and crowded affairs.

Youre unlikely to get brawls on Sunday or Monday nights, indeed there was hardly anyone else in. Beer was great (choice of 5), barmaids friendly, locals seemed fine as well. Excellent rock jukebox which played continually both nights, free presumably. Outside drinking/smoking area looked good too. The pubs nicer inside than it looks from the outside as well. Give it a try you dont have to stay!

Drunken rowdiness in a pub? Whatever next? But seriously we went there several times during our stay in Llangollen and the Sun varies from an ale drinkers paradise to a kicking Saturday night rock pub with a late licence. Five real ales at a time were on when we went, including Wobbly Bob at 6%, Brysons Hurricane Bitter, Milestone Cromwell Gold and some others Im a bit hazy about. We got bought a beer each from some local chaps who we got talking to, also met other holidayers including one doing a trip on the nearby Shropie Canal. One small niggle - the pub has a couple of husky dogs which are allowed to mingle with the customers when its quiet, including going out into the courtyard Im not totally convinced about them as they do pester people who have crisps etc, and when its raining they still keep going in and out and get wet then you can smell them. But a great put to go to.

I love this pub!! I travel most weekends to come to this pub for it's amazing juke box, friendly staff, brilliant live music and the best variety in beers for a long way. For many I know this is the best pub in North Wales by far! Even the next door neighbours are big fans and locals. I do, however, completely DISagree with the comment beneath, the Sun is the only place in Llangollen that gives the locals and visitors anything good about the weekends. Surely it is up to the proprietor of the Sun whether they answer their own phone or not? And did you ever think that because the band is on they do not hear the phone? Just some ideas... Anyway keep up the brilliant work because you are the best pub by far!

A very good pub for music. The landlords are however expanding on this, which is 'enraging' the residents which surround the venue. Denbighshire council has already warned the pub to keep the noise down from both music and the smokers in the covered area (beer garden).
Rowdy, drunken pub visitors are engaging in anti social behaviour in nearby streets until the early hours.
Not good.
Also, no one answers telephone after midnight because chances are, it is a resident complaining.
This needs addressing. Otherwise, a good venue with good ale.

Enjoyed my real ale in the sun trap of a courtyard of this grade ll listed pub.
|
Rated pub, good mix of friendly people all ages. Live rock music Fri and Sat night, very busy, often some good covers such as Hendrix etc. Spot on ale, Salopian Shropshire Gold the localish permanent ale, perfect session ale and a perfect pub for a session. cheers.

Most tasteful pub ive been to with excellent beers, real fires and a warm and friendly atmosphere. Love this pub!

The Sun Inn Llangollen is an original gem of a pub, that landlords Paul and Alan have filled with character and charm. Live music that rocks the place, the best selection of real ales Ive seen. Beer garden is like stepping out into Narnia with period lighting and heaters for the smokers that work! The juke box has an outstanding selection of tracks from Frank Zappa and Floyd to Dylan and Pogues. Defiantly a pub for the more mature and discerning taste.
|
The sun inn llangollen has live music 4 nights per week. Starting on a wednesday with an open mic night. On Thursday there is the resident Jazz band 5 a penny with Roy Potts. Rock usually fills the friday spot, with more of a blues twist on Saturday nights.
The Sun Inn has successfully been doing the same thing for the last 10 years, live music, real ale, special evenings with a pot of something nice on the go or a bbq. Great atmosphere! Second to none!
|
No way! The Sun's still wonderfull, real ale, great music, lively atmosphere. The Prince is lousy, rotten keg beer and locals who glare at you and get their banjos out. Dreadful
|
went into the sun inn, found it was a bit drab and past it,was a native of llangollen 20 years ago,its a shame the old sun inn spirit has gone, went further up road to the prince of wales in which my parents managed in the 1980"s and had a great time, friendly customers, landlord, bar staff, keep it up prince of wales inn, regent street, llangollen,my parents who use to run it would be proud! A1 service!

Bit surprised that no - one has posted on this site since Dec 2003. It's a fine traditional pub just outside the centre of Llangollen on the main A5 road. Note in particular the attractive glass doors and some unusual seating consisting of former school desks. There is a stage area for live music which is usually held on Friday and Saturday. There is a good range of real ales, principally from micros. Try the Salopian Shropshire Gold if its on. This pub and The Wynnstay Arms, on which I am about to comment, would appear to be easily the pick of the pubs in Llangollen - unless of course you know better
|
Excellent pub with a fine range of wine, real ales and imported largers. Sells the excellent Leifmann's Kreik on draught! Great atmosphere, friendly landlords, lively main room (often with live music) and a quieter, more intimate back room. Also a heated, covered outside seating area for the fresh-air lover. Good and occasionally free food! Probably the best pub in Llangollen or even the whole upper Dee valley!
