Surprised at the negativity on this one. A regular for my brother and his wife, but my first visit this week. No fault found from this reviewer, tidy place and food all good stuff and service fine. Beer just the Tim Taylor Landlord and Black Sheep, but in good order. Has a farm shop attached which is a bit unusual for any pub. Well worth a visit if in the area, for the unusual location if nothing else.

I have visited the Rams Head on many occasions and have always been pleased with the food. However the standard has really dropped, I visited for lunch recently and was given warmed up food from the previous sunday (this was a tuesday and they are closed mondays) It was disgusting, we mentioned this to the waiter/front of house and he just said the chef said it was fresh !! Never was this veg freshly cooked that day, it was old food warmed up. I wish I had refused to pay but have learned from this and will never go back. I agree with other reviews that the owner/front of house is a very miserable man.

The people who find this dump appealing obviously need to get out more.
Our complaints of waiting over 30 minutes for a starter and sending back inedible food were met with aggression, and a stand up row. Possibly the worst dining experience ever.
Whoever is running this joint, has no customer service training whatsoever. The food was very average and ridiculously expensive. Horrendous.

Dining pub high on the moors which I doubt attracts much drinking trade. It's contemporary with a rustic feel, with period wallpaper and two pleasant real fires in two of the three rooms. Apart from that it's upmarket and cosy, with piled carpets etc. Food was good and at 3 courses for 12.99 represents good value. Had no problem with the service whatsoever. Beer was limited to Landlord and Black Sheep, Landlord very well kept however. Not a boozer but altogether a good experience.

Having been regaular visitors to the Rams Head for the last year or so, on Good Friday I visited with my partner and his family. The food, as always was great, the service was unfortunately also as usal, shocking. We spent over 100 on 5 meals and yet when we asked to speak to the manager to make a suggestion (that perhaps making people with a sleeping baby stand and order food before anyone can sit down even though there isn't actually enough room in the area provided - "may we sit down and come back?" "Not until you've ordered")the owner actually swore at a member of our party. The fact that the person he swore at was a 65 year old grandmother should give you some indication of why I won't be giving this place another penny of my money. No wonder it only had two tables occupied on a bank holiday. If you're in the local area and looking for nice food and atmosphere, go to the White Hart - you won't be disappointed and you certainly won't be sworn at.

Great pub - great food - great location - always a warm welcome from the head waiter who is not a sergeant major type - just a genuine person - we go just because of his humour and do not go on his day off because its not the same (although everyone else is very pleasant)
It is not above its station - its log fires and its banter are just what you want - not like some places with good food and the atmosphere of a clinic where you're frightend to say anything that might disturb the silence.
The criticisms I've read on this site say more about the writers than about the Rams Head as I know it

Rubbish pub. It is well above it's station. They think they are the something they are not. This is an old pub turned into some fancy noveau place. The Landlord is a bad tempered big fatso. I passed one day going home and stopped as I needed the toilet (I live about 6 miles away from this pub) and the big massive round landlord told me I had to buy something if I wanted to use the Lav, some welcome eh...Avoid this crap pub.

We have been regulars at the Rams Head for 6 or 7 years. In all that time we have always had good, enjoyable food served by helpful, pleasant and attentive staff. We are surprised at other comments which refer to a Sergeant-Major type - this is not our experience; however, customers must treat the staff with respect to be respected in return. We love the Rams Head for its food, atmosphere and service and we recommend to everyone. The fact that it is always busy proves that the food and service are consistently good.

Used to serve great Theakstons Old Peculiar many years ago. Cozy open fire. Landlord at the time cracked us up, though. He went ape shit when my mate decided to put a log on the fire. Maybe he was just trying to cut down on his carbon emissions.

I thought this site was beerintheevening not foodintheevening. The Tup as this establishment is known to us locals is now more of a restaurant that sells beer rather than a pub that sells food. Made to feel unwelcome when just! going in for a drink.

Myself and my wife went to this pub last evening and we had an absolutely lovely meal. So - Food 10/10 as far as I am concerned.
However, dining out isn't solely about the food. There are many places to eat where the food is excellent.
Aa previous reviewer has stated, we too felt rushed. We had a starter, a main meal and a coffee and yet we were in and out of the place within 50 minutes.
This detracted massively from the occasion. The head waiter was, as mentioned above, a Sergeant Major type. He was professional, and saw that everything was in place but ... a smile and a bit of time would have been appreciated.
After my main course, I sat back with my belly full - and he came over to ask if I wanted a dessert or a coffee... what I wanter at that point was 10-15 minutes to let my meal digest.
I love this pub and it's out-of-the-way location, I love their food, I love their beer.
But give it with a smile and a bit of understanding that a 50 meal deserves more than a hour of your time.

we visited the pub on reading recommendations but I'm sad to say we were disappointed. We were greeted by a sergeant major barking out instructions to us instead of a host, we felt rushed and hurried to make our choices from the blackboards, no other menus available so choice is very limited. Although the service from the waiters was good, the food was nouvelle cuisine, food piled up pretty but not much of it. I would not go back again, and was very disappointed at the treat I had planned for us had gone downhill from walking through the door.

Probably the best pub food in the north.
Small bar (with snacks( and three large eating rooms)
All cooked to order and well presented - Don't expect to be served in five minutes though - Eating here is an experience, and worth the wait. Service is friendly and unhurried
Black Sheep and Taylor Landlord on tap.
Great fires in winter (well, eleven months of the year!)
10/10!

'Open fire when its cold' - it's always cold, there have been occasions when I've had to cling onto cars in the carpark to keep upright against the wind - and that's before I've had a drink!

Quality food from an interesting and varied menu, real ales, log fires, pleasant surroundings, excellent views. A pub with character that is well worth the drive. I came accross it only two weeks ago and have just made my third booking!

Lovely food, game venison etc in season. A bit out of the way but worth the drive. 2 mls from the M62 between Oldham and Halifax. Open fire when it's cold. Good beer, good wine selection, nice people.
