Never open when you nee a decent pint

As a former resident of this lovely town, it was an absolute joy to revisit and find that The Rat remains an absolutely class act. Superb range of ales, cosy and welcoming interior, pleasant locals and friendly staff. Go!!

A re-visit to a pub I thoroughly liked when I first came here a few months back. That visit was on a Monday evening and the pub was fairly empty, on my return at 10pm on a Friday (end of January) it was packed with barely a seat available.
6 ales on the hand pumps, my couple of pints of Saltaire Blonde were very good. I really like this pub, the chaps behind the bar are chatty but not intrusive, the locals are all extremely friendly, especially the couple of chaps that we’re playing the piano while a young lady sang, which was very pleasant and rounded the evening off nicely.
Pleasant décor and very ale and good quality lager orientated, just like my last visit I score the one eyed rat highly.

My 3rd pub tick of a flying visit to Ripon with the wife on a Monday afternoon. We arrived here just after 6pm, not that busy but the chatter was lively.
7 ales on the pumps available, all ales were light in colour with the exception of the porter from Hop Studio. In addition there are 2 real ciders and a few top quality lagers. My choice of Phoenix’s Flash Flood @ 4.1%, which was very good.
Narrow frontage opens up into a long thin pub with a large open seating area to the rear with a piano. In the front seating area a real fire was burning and added to the relaxed atmosphere.
The landlord was chatting to several locals at the bar. The One Eyed Rat has been in the GBG for over 20 years and in my opinion (from this one visit) guarantees you a friendly welcome along with cracking ales and no quiz or fruit machines or televisions.
Another must visit pub if you haven’t been already.

Friendly welcome. Nice environment. Lovely range of beer to sample. Along with lagers and fruit wines. A proper, nice pub. No food, just good drinks. Great local pub feel. Definitely worth a visit and worth the walk out of town.
|
Still very good. Blackboard beer menu. Great fish and chip shop 50 yards away.
|
Classic alehouse. Great selection and quality, great atmosphere. Still the best in Ripon in my opinion.
An absolute must visit when in town.
|
Splendid pub which always has a great choice of beers. Yesterday 5 golden ales from near and further away plus Black Sheep Bitter (for those who want it) and a porter. Front bar area has a fire in the winter and there is a large garden for the summer.
|
Very nice pub with beer on good form. Plenty of choice from local breweries, but missing the more established options. No Black sheep despite decor suggesting otherwise!
|
Just a wonderful place. Would have been quite happy just to be left there. A fine array of styles of ale, seven on I think.
|
Great pub, friendly staff & locals, good choice of ales for my friends & good choice of quality lagers for myself, & all reasonably priced. Big beer garden to the rear, a gem of a pub.
|
PS my views are based on lunchtime visits

I have been to the "Rat" many times over the last few years, company usually good Beers always kept in excellent condition and a good variety. No TV although a set put up for the 6 nations rugby. Staff very friendly though landlord usually less so reluctant to speak to his customers (not a good attitude) We will still return though for the beer and company of the customers

Best in Ripon by a long, long way!
Good selection of ales, lagers and ciders. Tried Viking, Chinook and the Honey porter, all superb.
Great service from friendly staff, good atmosphere and a warm welcome.
Will definitely be back!

Timeless pub with friendly atmosphere. Smiling staff. Very popular. The ale served was in excellent condition, average 2.70 pint. A blackboard above the fireplace display s the ales on offer including tasting notes. One of those pubs to sit in all night choosing from the beer menu, a gem.

This is what i call a pub, caravan a lot around ripon with friends and always visit, we like traditional beers & always try new ones like the stronger beers more taste, favourite beers are jennings sneck lifter, old speckled hen, abbots, & a beer from the rock in cornwall can,t remember name.
|
Looked foward to this but i was disappointed. Miserable landlord who just wasn't bothered. Beer was good thou. Prob visit again but could do with friendlier welcome.
|
Excellent real ale pub, best (only, really) in Ripon. Wide choice of guest beers when we went, 7 or more. Very popular, though it was a Saturday night following Ripon races. Still, has a beer garden which is larger than it first seems so seating not a problem. Good atomsphere and cosy, friendly interior. Highly recommended.
|
Easily the best pub in Ripon, indeed probably the best pub for many miles. Narrow but deep building, formerly called the Lord Nelson - geddit? Generally friendly, wide range of well kept beers, no food,TV or jukebox. Varied clientele, children and dogs seem to be welcome. On the down side it doesn't open till 5 except Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Exactly as the post below. No music. No TV.
Superb.
I particularly like the beer 'menu' with a brief description of the 'taste'. That's a hell of a helping hand when it comes to trying new ales.
Wonderful place.

It's rare to find a pub like The One Eyed Rat these days, but find it - if you love pubs and love beer. No music, no telly, just a great atmosphere and real ales to savour.
There are usually about six real ales on sale, and these change with startling speed. You try one, like it, and within a couple of days it's been replaced by another because the demand for real ales is so great. The blackboard behind the bar and over the real fire (in the winter) will tell you what's on offer and what delights are to come. It changes every day!
I'm giving it a perfect 10, because I can't think of a better real ale pub; and I used to live in Dudley, with the delights of The Beacon at Sedgley, Ma Pardoe's and the Bull and Bladder in Brierley Hill, amongst many others, to choose from.
|
Stranded in Ripon for a couple of hours while Mrs AR investigated the local bellringing, I managed to find this superb pub after a couple of duds. Not only half a dozen real ales primarily from local breweries, but a fine wine list and proper food if you wanted.
This place draws a wide customer base: young and old, men and women, all enjoying the good things on offer in a serene atmosphere.
A lesson in how to do it. Eschew other pubs and try The One-Eyed Rat.
Cheers,

Very, very fine pub. Quite busy, but worth it.
|
Good real ale pub. Great selection of beers. A hidden gem of a beer garden round the back for those sunny days
|
Made my stays in Ripon something to look forward too. Best beer & choice around.
|
I visit family a couple of times a year in ripon and this is the must do stop. Tremendous choice of ales and a real drinking man's feel to it. Excellent

The new landlord took over just over a month ago. A few minor changes, such as the Taylor's Landlord not being a permament beer.
|
This pub is a gem for Ripon. It doesn't do food. If you are a local (like me) you can partake in the Sunday lunchtime biscuits with cheese and nibbles sometimes laid on the bar. Black Sheep Bitter and Tim Taylors Landlord are on full time. The other four pumps change continually serving fine ales from all around the country. Konig Pils and Oranjeboom are there. Fruit wines and also a good selection of wines from the local wine merchant. Oh, and there are a selection of continental bottled beers to try as well. And.... it has a fantastic beer garden where Sundays drift away happily. Privately owned, the landlord proposes to retire later this year (2004) so hope is put on it being bought by someone who will keep it very much the same. Well worth a visit!

The best beer in the world great 10 out 10

Excellent real ale pub with some cracking export lagers now on draught to boot. Marvellous bar billiards table. Best in the area by a long, long way. Don't think it does food but thats not why you go there.
