Best pub in Thirsk for real ales.

Few places ever seem to be as good on a re-visit -alas the case here. Pub still okay but the ale (Moorhouse's Witchfinder) was a struggle to drink.
|
Well worn old pub serving decent ale with staff who take an interest in the ale and customers. Only slight gripe is that all four ales on were blonde-ish.

Paid another visit recently when in Thirsk. I like this place and can never understand why it is always so empty.
5 pumps at the bar, offering Abolition by Sonnet 43, Comfortably Numb by Bad Co, Falconer (not sure of brewery), Scrambler by Rooster, and Theakston Best Bitter. I had the Scrambler which was spot on and £3 for the pint.

A one night stay in Thirsk, no pubs in the current GBG to tick so we just worked our way round the 8 pubs in the main square, starting off with the very attractive but empty Little 3.
6 ales on the hand pumps all ales from Yorkshire breweries, apparently there are 2 permanently on and the other 6 change regularly, the pump clips lining the wall and ceiling of the bar show how many have been served since the start of the year until 1st May when they ran out of space! I had a pint of Pennine Brewing Co’s Pennine Challenge @ 3.9%.
The pub used to be called The Little Three Tuns but apparently when Wetherspoon’s moved into the town and took over the Three Tuns the new landlord of this place changed the name to The Little 3, an interesting fact given to us by the really chatty and slightly bored young barman, as we were he’s only punters it gave him something to do talking to us.
Lovely old fashioned pub with original wooden beams, low ceilings, a couple of little seating nooks, very large open cooking range / fireplace. In addition there’s a large back yard with benches, to the top of the yard is a raised seating area with shelter, apparently the pub gets rammed when it’s race day.
A thoroughly decent pub with good ales.

I see this has now been added under its new name. I have previously left a review after visiting last year (under its old name, Ye Olde Three Tuns).
Of the 6 pumps, 5 were available, which is a marked improvement since my last visit. Available were safe bets Tim Taylor Landlord and Theakston Best Bitter, plus Springwatch 3.9% by Moorehouse's, Mill End Mild 3.6% by Ossett Brewing Co, and Farmers Ginger Beer 4.3% by Bradfield Brewery.
I went for the Ginger Beer, for something a bit different. It settled nicely, pale and slightly cloudy, with the head all but disappearing by the time I was half way through the pint. This is more subtle than some of the ginger beers available out there, but very enjoyable and most refreshing.
One thing I can't figure out about this place is that it has been dead on both my visits. On the first occasion I put this down to timing, but on my most recent visit Thirsk itself was pretty busy but only one other person in the bar when I entered, and by the time I came back in from the beer garden this other person had disappeared. The beer garden was pleasant and peaceful in the lunch time sun.
Perhaps the place gets busier at evenings and weekends.
