user reviews of the Constitution, Pimlico

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I'd been to the Chimes Wine Bar (also on Churton Street) previously as this used to be one of the more reliable cider places in London. When visiting, I'd often noticed this pub further up the street, but never set foot in it. Yesterday afternoon I finally made it in to what is a very cosy backstreet local with what seems like a fairly loyal clientele. Whilst it doesn't have the beer range of the nearby Cask, it is a much nicer drinking environment with lots of nautical memorabilia. A couple of TVs were showing football and horse racing. Ales were Greene King IPA, Sharps Doom Bar & Wadworth 6X. To my surprise, they also had Old Rosie cider - maybe because the Chimes is now no more and the locals needed somewhere else to get their cider fix. Worth popping into.

The Constitution makes an appearance in the 2015 GBG so with the year running out I took the opportunity to tick it as I don't think it appears in the 2016 edition.

1pm on a Saturday when I arrive at this old fashioned locals pub that once inside you realise it’s very much a blokes drinking pub with all the clientele being male. The friendly landlord is chatting to a group at the bar who were watching both the football and horse racing that were on the televisions.

4 ales and 1 cider on the cask hand pumps. Greene King IPA, Spitfire, Sambrook's Wandle and Sharps Doombar. My pint of Wandle was very good, sometimes Wandle isn’t the best pint and from my experience is pone of those ales that suffers more than others if kept poorly.

I took a seat by the front door and watched a bit of the football and listened to the locals chatting. I only stayed for a pint but it was enough time for me to appreciate this pub.

Honest locals pub.

My favourite pub in Pimlico (with The Morpeth Arms being a close second), The Constitution is a welcoming, traditional one room pub with good beers, friendly and down to earth staff and a mixed and interesting clientele.

The kind of place where, once you have entered, you don't want to move on from there.

One of the better Pimlico pubs. You can tell they are actually making an effort.
curioushistory - 26 Mar 2012 17:56
We use this pub for the footie or rugby, full of characters and the odd lost tourist, well kept bar ,friendly ish landlord, better than most around here!

I really liked this pub. Fours ales on pump ad it had a really good feel about the place. This was the second pub on a crawl of the area and I found this to be probably the friendliest.

Worth a visit.

A traditional, high street boozer in the middle of Pimlico. There's a few benches and chairs outside, and the troughs of flowers make for an attractive appearance.

Inside, it's a single room, square bar with carpet on the floor and much wood panelling on the walls, a mustard colour paint on the ceiling and plenty of jugs, plates, etc., on a shelf around the perimeter. The pub has a somewhat nautical theme, with a ship on the pub's sign, various drawings of ships hung on the walls and a few model ships displayed by the leaded windows at the back. Seating was a mixture of tables and chairs, with a number of high stools at the bar.

There was a plasma at the back of the pub as well as an old TV perched up on a shelf near the door. Neither of these were in use on a recent visit, but there was a Sky Sports fixture list on the wall, so clearly they do get regular use. We didn't eat on this occasion, but a specials board chalked up next to the bar listed various dishes such as Ham, Egg & Chips and Macaroni Cheese. I'm not sure what was on the regular menu if this was the specials, but they looked reasonably priced at around the 6/7 mark.

Beers on tap were Sambrook's Wandle, Courage Best and Directors, and Spitfire. A surprisingly good choice of cider for pubs in these parts with Strongbow, Magner's Golden Draught and Weston's Traditional Scrumpy.

Spent Tuesday evening in this place and was impressed.

I had 3 different beers -- all were well kept and prices were what I'd expect.

Service was friendly and quick and it was generally a nice place to drink.

Good ordinary boozer. Prices creeping up but then it is Pimlico.

Just shooting through London yesterday and popped into this establishment. Pimlico is a bit of a swanky area and this is a nice pub. Busy with friendly staff and boasting sky sports, makes this pub better than many of the dull pubs in victoria. Will go back there. 7/10.

Nearly 4 years since our last review and I'm pleased to say its still a regular for the boyz. For some time now they have been doing a lunch special of a meal and a pint/large wine etc for 6.

My initial impression upon entering this pub was not favourable largely as the customer base seemed a bit down market. As I settled down to my pint I realised that the pub was somewhat better than I first thought.

A single wood panelled room with a nautical them there are also several TVs scattered around and clearly the football plays a significant part in the life of the bar. Four ales on offer GKIPA, Abbot Ale, Spitfire and Courage Best. Clientele largely drawn from the white van driving community in the early evening and while this grated a little initially there was no bad behaviour or drunks in evidence.

There aren't many good pubs in Pimlico and the Constitution is better tha most of its nearby rivals.

Went to this pub recently with friends to watch England in the footy. This is a nice looking nautically themed pub. Service was good even though it was packed. I suspect they had extra staff on. Of the three real ales on offer we considered two were on the turn and the other ran out. Friendly enough pub but as a real ale drinker I would not go out of my way to return to this pub. Perhaps it was just an off day!
lambethdoylee - 30 Jun 2010 12:27
I like this pub, has a great atmosphere. Good clientel and worth the walk from Victoria Station, as the other pubs in Victoria are somewhat very dull.
Beer is well kept and locals are very friendly
thaiscubadiver - 24 May 2010 11:08
Decent enough pub in snooty area, the meal deal is great value, real ale, clean and friendly enough. You get the odd lost tourist however generally services locals and working public nearby, ok to good.
steviewonder - 16 Nov 2009 14:51
I liked it in here and found the barman to be friendly as were the mix of other customers. Spitfire, Pride and Pedigree were all available, but I cannot comment on the standard as I was on the Guinness which was well served. Its not the biggest pub, but they have still managed to cram in two plasma screens and a small TV for the showing of football.

This is a good local pub and my only complaint would be that the TVs were left on after the match had finished meaning that we all had to shout above extremely loud adverts.
Strongers - 10 Nov 2009 21:47
Poor beer, poor service. I bought a pint that was cloudy and vinegary. I asked to change it. The barman looked at it for a while, talked to his colleague, then started to serve me another of the same! I said no, I'll have a different one, which he served. That was drinkable but only just.

Shame because it's not a bad pub otherwise but I won't be going back.
itsthebeer - 24 Aug 2009 09:35
The outside of The Constitution is one of the best pub fronts around. Inside its a natural 'local' - relaxed lighting, needs a bit of sprucing up but not too much as it would spoil the feel. A great local sports pub, certainly not full of deafening music. Locals and tourists mix in together. Manager a bit of a character, not one of your boring old farts you get in so many pubs in London. Staff freindly but cheeky too. Reasonable selection of beers served well!
wildeSW1 - 18 Aug 2009 08:13
Like a building site...

Surprised it had so many customers, did nothing for me what so ever, a desert for ale lovers.

Perhaps the building work will transform it, but i doubt it.
SW2boy - 28 Jul 2009 00:59
A pub which is certainly punching above its wait.... it is nothing exceptional at all... staff distinctly average, decor very tired.... drink selection dull.

It really isnt the wonderful tradional pun amongst all the ghastly 'bars' which others have said... way over rated.

jamesbartlett74 - 23 May 2009 15:49
Old fashioned sort of pub, but surpringly empty for late afternoon as the offices were emtying out. Choice of three real ales, including a decent pint of Spitfire. Plenty of National Cask Ask Week coasters on display too.
rpadam - 9 Apr 2009 21:10
A great no nonesense pub, a good mix of regulars and passing trade.

Ideal if you want to avoid the usual tourist / trendy bars that are dotted around the area.
alpimlico - 2 Apr 2009 11:33
Looked for a nice place to enjoy a pint and watch some sports. For this, it was perfect. Rugby on one screen, Premier League football on another. Staff and management were friendly, guests seemed to be mostly locals. Would like to come again.
Clemens - 26 Dec 2008 19:34
Certainly quiet place and the most expensive in the area by some way... but also has some of the least friendly staff or management...
ChrisBoyd67 - 7 Jul 2008 14:07
Please please please turn off MTV. Is a pub not for having a quiet drink and a chat ? This is impossible with gansta rap or what ever the filth is called blaring out. No one apart from the bar staff likes it.
The landlord does nothing when you ask for the racket to be turned down or preferably off. Otherwise ok..

Ryan from Hawaii

It was my first trip to Europe on business. The last placed that I visited was London. The Constitution caught my eye, walked in, had a great time. Visited there the two night that I was in London. Surrounding is great, good old timers there, great selection of drinks. Food selection and quality is exceptional. Love the two lovely bartenders. make you feel right at home. A home away from home. Visit the week of 10.28.07. Miss you all there. Send me a note. I forgot to leave my business card.

Ryan

Pretty old oak panelled room with nice carpet.
6X and Spitfire were fine.
There are 2 biggish tvs and it gets quite busy with sports watchers, but you can easily sit comfily and talk as well.
Joint first with the Jugged Hare in my Pimlico.
AbeC - 3 Nov 2007 13:26
A proper locals pub right there in the middle of Pimlico. Most old fashioned and fairly comfortable decor, except the TV screens showing MTV. Fairly friendly atmosphere and the beer was OK too.
Muzthing - 12 May 2007 14:02
Smashing pub. The beer's okay - don't remember it being either superb or poor. What is great about the Constitution is the wide-ranging clientele. Locals who've clearly been coming in for years, a few suits, a few passers-by, a few youngsters and few drop-outs. Just what a pub should be. It's cosy, too. Lovely mad old lady is always there collecting the glasses - she's fabulous. Best pub in a mile radius.
davidb - 29 Jan 2007 11:07
Well the boyz like this one. Big portions of food, limited menu though, and decent booze. If you use the tables outside check the stability and the angle. Good ambiance with a varied clientel. Can get a bit smokey sometimes. 8/10
WaitorseBoyz - 5 Dec 2006 14:59
Hidden away in Pimlico, the Constitution is just far enough away from Victoria to escape the commuting hoards, and is all the better for it. The atmosphere is relaxed, the (mainly Polish) bar-staff are efficient and friendly and it has the most eclectic mix of customers in the neighbourhood: old geezers, well-heeled young gels, family groups of cagouled tourists, young hipsters, eccentric old ladies, local office workers etc. The food is standard pub grub but is inexpensive and served in large portions. Recommended. 7/10.
elwood_p_dowd - 14 Jul 2006 09:41
one of my fave pubs in pimlico. London pride is always top quality. Nice friendly atmosphere.
heathd - 13 Mar 2006 18:13
Yeah, it's nice & the suits can't seem to find it as easily as they can other pubs hereabouts, which is nice. It doesn't seem as friendly as it was 4-5 years ago though. Staff turnover I suppose.
Smelfungus - 16 Jan 2006 11:54
Great little pub in Pimlico. Good atmosphere for the football and full of friendly locals. Only downside is that it is a bit smokey and the pints (Guinness and Stella) were 2.95.
patricksawyer2004 - 29 Sep 2005 14:24
Very good pub with excellent Guinness and friendly staff; gets a bit smokey at times but interesting crowd from varied places compensates for it.
Tburrows - 3 Feb 2005 21:36
On odd mix of old duffers bedding in, young French chaps watching the Rugby, a couple of crusty's in loud baggy jumpers... and then me and my cohorts there for a friends birthday before going to a club around the corner. Most cosmopolitan then but you wouldn't guess from the decor. Traditional wood panneling with pictures of old sailing ships, just as a pub should be. The locals didn't seem to mind the eclectic ambience imbued upon them - maybe this was actually a typical night? Quality.
Good for: Whenever you like.

Good drink, good people.

Friendly staff, nice glowing "gas" fire this time of year, and tables outside for those who fancy. This is really tucked away aswell... Dont miss it
