This is an English Village Pub as you hope to find it. Warn welcome, good beer and nice food. The menu has some interesting dishes, and reasonably sensible prices. We enjoyed it enough to go twice when we spent a long weekend locally

This really is a nice pub (well, restaurant really!!). Hall and Woodhouse beers were on offer, never much to shout about. I had the King and Barnes 'Sussex'... only three pounds a pint!!! Result!!! This is worth a visit, if you can find it!!!

Very Disappointed. I visited on Tuesday at 2 30 hoping to have a spot of lunch before driving back to Nottingham only to be told they stopped cooking. I was shocked that they would turn custom away on Easter Tuesday. Will not be visiting again.

Stopped by tuesday evening and liked it so much thought we would eat there and we were not dissapointed. Great food, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.

Visited on a Tuesday evening and had a very nice meal (Pigeon and Guinea Fowl). Good ale on tap as well. Although the food felt a little pricey it was of a very high standard. The pub itself is a lovely, old, well maintained affair. Would go back.

Visited this pub for the second time last night & was not dissapointed. The 3 real ales were all 1st class. I took a party of friends & I have to say the meals where excellent & good comments from all friends. The staff where friendly & attentive.I have nothing but praise for this pub.Well done Landlord & Staff.

I was Most impressed with the friendly staff and excellent ale. I had the First Gold and Fursty Ferret and both were in very good condition. I would definately Visit again next time I'm in the area. Was dissapointed it didn't open til 12 on a saturday as waiting to have a beer there put us behind on our day walking the Itchen valley

What a charming pub! We had a few beers here on Saturday and received wonderful service in what is a beautiful old pub full of charm and great decor. It's a Badger's pub which meant I was lucky enough to be drinking Pickled Partridge. I look forward to my next visit.

The Chestnut horse Easton: very overpriced and disappointing‎ - ‎ - Today We were looking for somewhere to eat after a long walk in the area. This had good write ups so we chose it. The staff were very friendly but the food was VERY disapponting. All starters are 6 (soup) to 8 minimum. They were very disapponting. We had fish and chips for 13 and some of the portions had no fish in them - they were all batter. The venison for 17 tasted worse than school lunch - it was disgusting. ONly 2 people bothered with pudding and they ordered a chocolate assiette which had hardly seen any chocolate and was again very overpriced for small scoops of strawbery ice cream. The service was friendly if slow and that made it hard to complain. Subsequently, we were contacted by manageress as we joined some sites to review the place as so incensed by the poor quality food and received an e-mail protest about our review. I replied asking about the terms of the free meal offered and i have received another e-mail that I would rather not have had. Still no response to my return e-mail that I had replied to her first request and offer (and thought about my response carefully and taken time over it). Her main complaint was that if I want to write poor reviews I should have complained at the time. This is often fine- but we were taking out my brother and his wife for a very special meal and they would have got up, walked out and never eaten with us again in public if we had complained as they hate that sort of scene. If we had been just the family, we would have refused to pay it was so bad. We would never recommend it . We spent a fortune on a disgusting meal....

Went last night on the reviews posted - oh dear! Waited 45 mins for food and received no apology told to wait 5 mins - 15 mins later food rceived - good food spoiled because they hasd obviously rushed it. 'Obvious' locals served ahead of us too rubbed salt in. Ale was past its best but drinkable. Nothing under 12 and small portions - as posted in 2007 - more for the Chelsea tractor set I am afraid. Complained at end and offered 10% off bill - but no apology which i would have been happy with and let it go at that! Ho hum maybe they were having a bad day and our experience was not typical. Shame because pub was very quaint. Have had better service and food for less money though.

I have been there on Saturday, very nice pub, authentic with delicious food. Great value for money

Had lunch here and very impressed. Great 'oldie worldie' country pub with lots of character. Good service and the food was excellent. Glad we booked as it was packed on a Friday lunchtime. Would definitely return.
|
Had lunch there today. We didn't book and had a half hour wait as it was a busy period. Sat at the bar and ordered our food and was shown to our table as our food was coming out. 55 for three people with 2 courses each. Not bad when food is freshly cooked. Desserts amazing! Can recommend Banoffie Pie, Creme Brulee and Sticky Toffee Pudding! Delicious! Will definitely be going back there!

Ate there last weekend. When you look at the prices: Winchester area! Not for common locals. Fish and chips for 12.95. Not a giant portion. Good beer, good service, but more a London experience than a rural one.

Lovely pub in a superb location. Have eaten here six times and never been disappointed. Good real ales as well.

Great looking pub in beautiful surroundings. Went on a Sunday evening, wasn't overly busy. Not much on the menu and it was expensive. Food was good, but portions not big!
Very friendly and helpful staff.

brilliant food, great service and could'nt fault it in anyway.

"The execution of the food left a lot to be desired", according to the last reviewer. And I'm afraid that comment is a reflection of the sort of person who drinks in there. I can only wish bad things for reviewers like this ... ooh, I'm coming over a bit Travis-like in Taxi Driver.

Loverly pub. Great location. So mush to offer but I was sorely disappointed by the food. I was expecting great cooking but whilst they had some interesting and exciting ideas the execution of the food left a lot to be desired
|
Excellent pub, great food, helpful and friendly but not pushy staff. excellent choice of booze.

One of the finest village pubs in the Winchester area. Good selection of ales. Cosy traditional pub with a pleasant little beer garden. Outstanding menu using local produce and a decent wine list. Open fires in the winter. A good base for country/riverside walks in warmer months. When I have friends visit from abroad, this is where take them. ...and the local village cuties behind the bar help add to the appeal as well ;-)
