One of the better pubs I tried after my visit to the Wenlock yesterday. This is a small pub a stone's throw from Old Street station. I was quite impressed that in addition to the regular beer Doom Bar, they had 2 Thornbridge ales on yesterday - Crackendale & Jaipur. Neither are my kind of beer. But I tried the Crackendale and it was in good condition.

Another pub that the owners are looking to do up for the young crowd. A good pub that will soon be no longer. Sad.

An Angelic crawl last night started here. Very busy after work hours but professional multi-tasking barman was quick to spot me and was pouring my drink whilst still dealing with the previous customer. At least three screens showing sport. Good functional boozer.

The Angel is a fairly traditional style pub that will fill a gap if you have a gap that needs filling but wont leave you with any great lasting impressions. The beers are rather mainstream (Bombardier, Pride and Greene King IPA) and not particularly cheap - Bombardier at 3.20 is at the stretching it end of pricing, even for London. The interior is neat and tidy with leather backed built in seating and a semi circular bar but the (I counted 3) plasma screens seem to be a bit too dominating. The patterned windows display Taylor Walker symbols which always remind me too much of Arsenal which isnt good. The background music was also incredibly dull. There was a bar upstairs but I didnt feel any great inspiration to explore the place that far. On the whole, a very average place, not one to avoid but certainly not one to make any great effort to seek out.

I actually counted four flat screen teles and my only gripe with this place was that I couldnt actually find an area where I could sit and not be in full view of a bright blazing plazma. But that apart I found this to be a decent corner pub. Ale choice was as described by Strongers below and seemed to be well kept. There is a few limited outside tables on the Leonard Street side, but the density of the traffic on the City road doesnt make this place conducive to enjoying an outside pint.

On my recent week night visit here I enjoyed a decent pint of Pride with a few friendly locals and hospitable staff. Greene king IPA and Bombardier were also available alongside a standard draught selection. There is a small servery at the end of the bar that serves up basic pub grub for the peckish.
Sky sports was being shown on all three plasma screens and from the advertisements in the bar I gleaned that another two screens are located in the upstairs bar that doubles up as a function room.
I liked it in here and would certainly recommend it to others.

try the ham and cheese toasties, winner.

Good boozer - krsone, or should that be Murph, I recall the Prodigy incident well, also when I forgot that you can't smoke in pubs anymore (think I'd had too many at that point!)
|
Gives the impression of being a pretty decent sort of pub. Busy, but not overcrowded. Efficient bar staff. Friendly mix of customers. The real ale choice is nothing to write home about (three of the usual suspects), but the Greene King IPA was in good condition.
|
Good staff and comfortable. Not the place to spend an evening, but worth a visit for a pint or two before the tube/train.

Always welcoming

Pretty unremarkable pub in my opinion. Nothing about it stands out. GKIPA, Pride and Bombardier on. I had the IPA which tasted like GKIPA always does. Expensive at over 3 a pint for a very average beer. Cant see any reason for a repeat visit.

Proper traditional boozer in an area lacking in such things. Good beer and comfortable. Although the guy the guy behind the bar didn't appreciate me putting Smack My B1tch Up by The Prodigy on the jukebox, and cancelled it half way through, (Shouldn't have it on the jukebox then should he)? Good pub though.

Good boozer,decent beer as well.

I've been coming here since 2000, first for a proper drink in a proper pub and since 2001 and Liverpools 5-4 triumph, when we re-christened it The Lucky Pub, for major sporting fixtures, where the friendliness, good beer and landlord with an excellent sense of what is needed for a major sporting occasion make this pub my favourite in London!
|
mediocre ales rather smokey, sports orientated - possibly better alternatives in this locality depending on what your looking for

Thank god for this place. The only decent real pub in the area. Friendly staff, good beer, and apparently there's a couple of pool tables upstairs (although I've never got as far as the stairs!). Always manage to somehow get a seat.
Mixed crowd, good atmosphere, defintely recommended.

Fantastic friendly staff, shorts served in iced glasses. One of the last real pubs left in the city that hasn't gone gastro and laminate floor on us. XXXX could do with replacing with Fosters as below, but the place is excellent none the less.
|
Just down the City Road from Old Street roundabout. Decent beer, friendly staff. I count 4 big screens but there are probably more upstairs. Interesting mix of customers, not too crowded, always seems to be seats when I'm there(!) My only gripe was that I can hardly breathe with the thick cigarette smoke. Thank goodness for the two doors! Another one to try.

Not too easy to find these days but this is a 'proper pub' in the City. Great barstaff, and the landlord is a top man. Recently added plasma screens so you can see the tv from all parts of the pub.
|
I really like this pub, genuine staff. Great for City people who don't like City pubs!
|
Reasonable in here yeah,..but surely you can do better than XXXX on draught as your weak piss option. (didn't that go out with Eldorado?)....Its gotta be fosters or carling surely!
One fruity

yes it's full of suits but at least it's a real pub, good beer, good service and it's not All Bar One/Pitcher/Wetherspoons.

Really Like this pub. Nice atmosphere, good pub food and has an upstairs room with pool table, tv, small terrace. Bar staff and landlord v friendly and I hear its now open on Saturdays which is very handy for this area which seems to shut down at weekends. Can't even get a coffee on a saturday never mind a pint so well done to The Angel
