Last pub of a the local crawl for a pint of Guinness. Atmosphere was bland, at least it was cool and empty!

Is it open or is it closed? No comments for 4 years so it must be anybody's guess!

Pews is the only decent place to get a drink in Guildford at the moment, it's largely been the same for the last 18 years but it seems to work. The beer selection is good on lager but bad if you like bitter and the pricing is ok. I quite like the staff, they seem pretty affable. The main draw is the outside courtyard which is great all year round.
A somewhat below average wine bar which really caters for the younger types more than any of those older real ale drinkers.
Over priced drinks in my opinion compared to other local bars in the surrounding streets and unfortunatley staff who could not look more bored or more angry about doing their job. Other than that brilliant setting and great garden area.
Never a bad word to say about this place, reasonable price, seems to be run in a very relaxed manner, but very well. seems to miss some personal identity tho. Lager selection isn't dull and SPirit selection exactly what you would expect from a small independent Bar. Always good for starting a night out before heading else where.

This place was good to us. Used to be somewhat relaxed with their ID policy which meant at aged 16 in the late 90s you could guarantee a good piss up.
Went back recently and it's changed quite a lot but still seems really pretty decent. Large garden and they had an open mic night on which was a good laugh.

Disappointing food choices I must say beer aint much better.
Pews has just lost its ourdoor late night licence which will damage the place i`m afraid.
Still a gr8 vene
Not as much fun as used 2 be.
A fine and welcoming atmosphere.
On the downside it is situated near lots of takeaway places which means it gets the yobs at times.
Would come here more if in the area.
Worthwhile for sport on tv.
A great bar, sadly opening hours dictate which times this place shall be open, but well worth a visit every now and again. Interesting Japanese lager on tap as well as showing Sky Sports! Recommended!
I agree PubMessenger this has lost what made the place different and worth spending a night .Staff have not got a clue how to pull a pint the Guinness I had was 3/4 Guinness 1/4 head whats that all about.Music was ok but its just like stand in a tent when your in the "garden". Ok for some not for me tho.
are you all on ket? this is the best place in guildford. If youre too old too go out. I recommend staying in. Pews / five and lime best summertime gardens
Hmmmm, Pews is interesting it used to be really quite a good venue in the day maybe a few years ago such as 2003 but these days nobody seems to give a toss about the place, im not sure if this is since they started staying open late and made it more of a piss up place. used 2 be ok for a meal out and all. i think the beer range aint much cop either now there was likes of worthingtons creamflow and boddings before now its basically the usual mix of lager.
Good old fashioned pub/eating place.
Bit of character to this place, dont worry about the flowers i think they r cool hidden away treasure chest not much ale though.. doh!
I like this place for what it is a bar. What will put people off is the plastic ivy and flowers out front, you half expect to be able to buy lucky heather and pegs when you see that.
Good to see this place doing so well, The food is well prepared here and I am sure it would do well on a Scores on the Doors report. Worth visiting for any pub fan.
Strange atmosphere on visit, will have to give it another try, but an awful lot of yongsters hanging around the doors.
Plenty of lager here, but not too much ale. Not a place for CAMRA to visit I expect.

The courtyard is now open until 11pm! If anyone is that bothered? Probably the people who come here to have a smoke. They sell an unusual Japanese lager, but I would not touch that if I was you, does weird things to your head. A good venue nontheless.

I have abandoned the H-File search given I came here yesterday evening with my girlfriend (15 May), meeting up with a few of her friends following our meal in Zinfandel opposite. The relatively smaller inside bar was quiet compared to the outside bigger courtyard bar area, which was lively with an acoustic guitar player present.
I opted for the inside bar to buy our drinks which were just under 5 for a pear Gaymers and a diet Coke, though the woman serving me almost forgot the Coke. Had to wait a while to be served, but probably still quicker than going to the outside bar. I paid nearly 6 earlier for similar drinks in the nearby Kings Head, so thought the prices here were fairly reasonable. The atmosphere was convivial and the crowd here appeared to be mainly blokes, non student (the students were probably all going to the Dusk formerly Time nightclub launch night) and 23 upwards. In the courtyard area, however, people were blatantly flouting the smoking ban where it was clearly covered.
To be honest if it was not for my girlfriend wanting to meet up with a few of her cronies (and us being in the restaurant opposite!), I would only really come here to watch televised football or Twenty20 cricket at a push. If I need to search for H-File victims again (if I split up with the girlfriend of course), then I feel Pews is not really the place to come looking. There are also better places in Guildford if you simply want a quiet drink.

it has been a while - the pews of old has returned with great friendly staff & a spot on atmosphere.
Great pub...only been there a couple of times cos i only discovered it reasontly but love it...its buzzing and the outdoor area has a nice holiday feel about it, shame we've had sucha misserable summer this year i'de have been here alot more...definately worth a visite...i hear the food is pretty good too..they also have a tv inside for you boys to watch ya sports on...cummon...could you ask for anymore???oh wait yeah...music...but i also heard a rumour they got some of that going on to...seems to me they've covered all the bases!
I'm liking this place even better the last few months! I guess the happy friendly studenty atmosphere works for me.
Used to like this place, but has gone down hill the last year. Is more like some kind of student hippy bar, but without the up side of that type of Amsterdam pub. Too youth hostel for me these days.
I have mixed feelings about this place. It always seems really grubby and studenty, but then it's an ok place for mingling.
Pimms and lemonade here is lovely in the summer. Otherwise, there's nothing special about the bar and the drinks menu.
Music is pretty good, but not really my kinda thing.
Very smokey, even in the oudoor section.

been to pews a few times now and really enjoy it. great outside area (sure to be a bonus when the smoking ban comes in !) small bar but the barmaids work bloody fast !!! i always have a good time here.
Recommend the food here - if you can stand the waiting time, can be over 30 minutes. But all freshly made. so is good.
Good lagers here including Becks Vier, Red Stripe and Amstel
Basically the same situation with the doors as Kings Head nearby

If you enjoy paying 3-4 quid for a beer, go there immediately. I was driving, and I asked the friendly attractive bargirl what I should have. She offered a heineken shandy. I accepted. I discovered it would cost as much as buying a pint in any other pub. Still, I wasn't paying for it, so I didn't really care. Music is good here, but for some reason they let rubbish bands play 3 songs, and actually gd artists are only allowed one song.
Went in here on a Sunday night. Nice atmosphere - beer was OK (I was drinking the Guinness) but the Spanish DJ was playing his music incredibly loud... what's the point on a Sunday night???
This place has really taken a turn for the better!
Whole place is really great. Food is top notch, with an interesting menu, and at decent prices; although, it only serves at lunch.
I watched the rugby on a plasma here, and the atmosphere was wicked.
Outside is superb, although it can get a bit packed on Thurs, Fri, Sat nights. I really like the accoustic guitar player on Thurs.
Drinks are fairly pricey, to be honest, but there's a great range of bottled beers; and it does keep the students away!
So for anyone upwards of 22, def give this place a try.
good stuff. One of the best places to drink in Guildford. Awesome outside area, inside isn't too bad but does get a bit busy if it's cold outside. Good selection of beers, tucked away from all the Yate's and Bar Med crowd.

EXCELLENT DRINKY HOLE. does not have enough lager on tap, although to truly fit in you must drink bottled imports, why not try my Sharona (remember if the lime is not facing to the right you're gay) or Budwalski (actually double malt beer brewed in the states and rumania AT THE SAME TIME)? Otherwise excellent acoustic gimme the mic sessions, flip hop nights and sporadic late liscences means this bar gives most other local late bars a good kick in the nadgers. Recieves my Tripple Seal Pup of approval.

Cool little bar, with a great outside courtyard bar at the back. Full of interesting people none of the bridge street type rubbish

I whole heartedly agree with Gareth, full of absolute clowns.

They used to sell very nice food here. Dont think the place is as good as it used to be. Small area for drinking as well

went to a friends birthday party the other week, it is a place not for the girls, crap toilets & full of blokes

Tuesday night is metal night - great fun!!!

Probably the best pub with the sad departure of the Powerhouse. Open Mic on Wednesday is always wicked. Funk on Monday is cool and Fridays it is always full of cool, interesting people. Ben Sherman crowd need not apply.

Used to be a bit scummy, but the new owner/manager type bloke Richard has turned it around rather well. Smallish with an outside courtyard area at the back with two bars, one inside and out, this is going to be one of the better places to visit in guildford over an evening. Fantastic on a wednesday night, because of open mic night. A little bit more of a musicians pub. Exactly what Guildford needs amongst all this 16 year old teeny bopperyness.
