Still probably one of the best bars for beer in Manchester. Although it's also very pricy. Packed as always after a Manchester City game yesterday, it has an excellent range of real ales and craft beers. Real ales on were Pomona Island APA, Five Points Brickfield Brown, Ilkley Mary Christmas, Magic Rock Common Grounds, Wylam Just About Midnight, Black Jack The Pokies & Squawk Fuska. The Wylam Imperial Macchiato was £7 a half. But at 10% it was very nice. Their other beer Just About Midnight was even nicer. Great bar.

Cafe style beer house with an extensive beer menu - including many the strength of wine and £25 a pop.
First in on a Sunday lunch, I had perfect Hawkshead Bitter.
Obvious that there's a lot of beer love here but not really what I look for in a drinking den and the Jazz was far too loud.

Returned to the Port Street Beer House on Sunday afternoon after finding it closed last time. As usual it was fairly busy. But the ale range was good - Magic Rock Common Grounds Coffee Porter, Kirkstall/Whitelocks CCCII, Black Iris Bleeding Heart, Squawk Pale, Track/Takk Finka & Redwillow Effortless. The cider was Blaengawney Hallets Heartbreaker. Still a good option not too far from Piccadilly station.

Closed when we tried to visit on Monday. Went to the Pie & Ale and the Soup Kitchen instead.

The Port Street Beer House was my final pub of the day. It's been on my hit list for some time. But I finally ended up here late last night. It was better than I had anticipated. The interior is fairly modern and it felt a little cramped with the volume of drinkers. Real ales were Hammerton Pentonville Oyster Stout, Celt Experience Pre-Prohibition IPA, Track Mazama, Magic Rock Common Grounds Coffee Porter, Wylam Puffing Billy, Cloudwater Bitter & Summer Wine Resistance Dark Mild. The Coffee Porter was nice. This bar also has a great selection of bottles and also craft beers, lagers and ciders - Magic Rock Dancing Bear Pils, Odell IPA, Mad Hatter Felicia (white chocolate & raspberry), Firestone Walker Easy Jack, Real Time Saison Partizan & Prairie, Hawkshead & Wild Beer BA Oat Wine, Hawkshead Brodie's Prime Export, Redchurch Shoreditch Blonde, Flensburger Lager, Mars Atom, Liefmans Cuvee Brut, Sandford Orchards Devon Mist, Mein Grunes Schneider Weisse, Veltins Pilsner, Orbit Laika Dunkelweisse, Brooklyn Lord Sarachi, Magic Rock/Lervig Redolent Rye & Mad Hatter Penny Lane Pale. If you know where you're going, it is very convenient for Piccadiily station. So I'd like to bet I'll be back here in the none too distant future.

Noticed on my last two visits the prices seem to have been creeping up here. It's now a challenge to get a pint for under £4 and many are £5 and above. The choice of ales is usually second to none, but it is less tempting to stay for as long as we used to due to the pricing. Still, it must work for them as they are always busy. That said, didn't take as long as usual to grab a table on my latest visit - either good luck, or a sign...

This pub is the epitome of the gentrified, real-ale-as-niche-product end of the cask ale pub spectrum. Knowledgeable bar staff and patrons in deep conversation about aroma, mouth-feel, hops and malts. Of course it's not all serious, you'll see a smattering of the nouveau riche laughing and joking as they pay £10-£15 for one bottle of beer.
If you are a ticker and/or have money to burn this place could be for you. Despite the helpful staff I found the atmosphere a tad sterile. It is worth a try but take plenty of money!

I'm so glad this place has been added to BITE, as it will surely attract many reviewers, in my opinion.
Okay, shouts of "London prices" do spring to mind when handing over your hard earned cash. However, the quality/standards of beer are superb along with their rocket fuel percentages. The pub itself is convivial enough, but not a place where you'd go alone. Hardly the place to strike up conversation easily, if you know what I mean?
All in all, if you summarise it up fairly, you treat it like a very good single malt whisky. That is both the ales and the place itself. You're not going to drink xxx% beers all day, and you're not going to do an all day session in there neither - unless you've just robbed a bank, that is.
My trips are indeed quite sporadic to date, and what has really impressed me the most was the Breakfast Stout by Founders Brewery. It is an absolute pleasure to drink - fantastic!
One note of caution is there seems to be a concerted effort by certain "trendy" conscious people (spreading across Manchester), who seem intent on beard growing with Morrissey style NHS specs!

This is a place which is seriously dedicated to beer. If you're after a Fosters or a Stella, walk on by. An ever-changing selection of real ales are available here. Not just from one visit to the next, but while you are in there if one ale runs dry, another one is up to replace it before you notice it has gone. It's off the beaten track to a certain extent, so easy to justify staying for at least a couple of pints in here. It is not huge inside but split across two floors and there is a seating area out the back with heat lamps. As far as I can see they don't do food, which allows the place to focus fully on its ale and that has to be admired. Bar nibbles are available and from memory were quite reasonable at £1 for a bowl of nuts.
Would definitely recommend a trip here for any ale lover!
