Excellent beer range and friendly locals. Well worth a visit. One of the best pubs in Colchester out of the 12 pubs I have visited recently.

Good back street local but larger than most. Red fox conges hall, might oak Oscar Wilde mild, might oak cellophane flowers, Adnams oyster stout and mosaic pale, Maldons pucks folly . Good price too at around 3.20 max a pint. Quiet Wednesday, but I bet it gets busy. Well worth the short walk from the town centre.

Top Pub - a focus on ale without becoming toomuch of a 'destination' pub and retaining a friendly local feel. friendly staff and customers make it a top pub in Colchester.

A local community pub that of late has gone from strength to strength. There is always a good selection of real ales & ciders available sourced from local breweries & beyond. The prices are competitive which is more than can be said for the pub opposite where identical ales are often on sale for 20 or 30 pence more. The staff are friendly & knowledgeable, always happy to have a chat & will even accept suggestions for future ales. The recent addition of a bar billiards table is a nice traditional touch. Based on current form it would be an injustice should this pub not appear in the next edition of the Good Beer Guide.

Been in here a couple of times now and its always dead. Had a few good and a few bad pints, they seem to have a lot of ale on but no customers to buy it. They're always happy to change it if the barrel has past its best and are very apologetic. No food but the do have a dart board now and the staff are friendly (overly so at times). Nice clean toilets (this might be from lack of use) and a covered smoking area. Not a bad pub just maybe in the wrong place. Disappointing.

A mate and I always include this pub in our list of those to visit whenever I get to Colchester. Friendly and knowledgable landlady and a good range of local beers, it's well worth the walk from the town centre.

Visited last night with my wife for the first time since the pub opened. The lady behind the bar was pleasant but the beer was very disappointing. 3 Adnams on offer and 1 Red Fox. I had a Broadside which wasn't good at all and my wife had an Explorer which she hated and said has lost its grapefruit flavour. There was a lack of atmosphere in what is a quite a large pub and a tinny sounding TV playing advert radio on the wall which all in all made the place feel like a social club.
Such a missed opportunity here - we wanted to see tapped barrels on the bar with more local beers. If youre going to call yourself The Ale House your product needs to be the best aroundit certainly wasnt. 5/10.

A rare visit to my home town, and whilst all the other suckers went to the WHCS to see the mighty U's lose to the bottom of the table team me and the other two old gits went to the newly refurbished and open Ale House formerly the Dragoon. Excellent range of Adnams Ales and guests, and whilst it still smells of paint it will undoubtedly take custom away from the pub across the road. 7.5/10
