It's a shame it is so far out of Blackpool but then perhaps it would not be the same pub. Lucky locals have a smashing all-rounder here. Decent, if not stellar, ales, plenty of pub food, sky sports, a good community local.

wasn't as good beer choice wise as last time I was in, strange pub, like a chef and brewer but with good beers , Im not sure I would bother again coming out of town for as its easier to get a train to Lytham than to get here. Still better than the turds of pubs in Blackpool

Been told a visit to Blackpool is not without a visit to the Shovels. Saturday afternoon at 1 ish it wasn't particularly busy but took a while to get served. Had 6 real ales on including the landlord's own, a good selection of beers from 6 different breweries. Went back about 5 ish and it was packed out, so much so we had to stand. Pricing was reasonable, 2 for a Greene King IPA, max we paid was 2.56 so impressed with that. Its a recommended visit, if you like real ale, MUST visit.

Visited in October when their beer festival was on. A truly superb pub. The landlord has an intimate knowledge of breweries and their beers. Worth a visit but a bit of a bus ride.
|
It is a year since we called into this pub, and although we didn't eat here this time the food menu looked good.
We had the house beer Shovells Best Bitter brewed by Lytham brewery, and Brewsters Red Hop Lover.
Both the beers were in good condition. Appeared to be a popular pub.

The recent 13th Beer Festival showcased some excellant beers.Including a 13.1% from Falstaff Brewery - played havoc with the guts the next day. Tried aload of beers and a weapons grade ginger beer! Washed it down with a 2 for 10 Steak & Eggs! Marvellous

Had some very well priced food in here for all the familly and some excellent beer. The Brew Dog beer was particularly good when I went in. The pub itself looks a bit like many other food outlets like a Brewers Fayre or similar , so the beer quality is a real surprise.

I don't usually put a review on this close to my previous one, but what a difference a day makes. Had good meals, good service and more excellent beers last night, so different from Friday night. Worthy of a higher mark this time.

Called in for the two for 10 meals last night and my steak was great, but the fish and chips did not have the tattar sauce and the chips were slightly undercooked. We ordered deserts and after 20 mins went to check about the delay, another 10 mins and they brought us deserts different to those ordered so time restrictions meant we had to have our money back. Maybe too busy for the amount of staff to cope. Good ales though.

Visited this pub yesterday, quite a few in but was served right away and the bar staff had a very friendly manner. The two different guest ales i tried were both bang on form, i didnt try the food so cant comment but many were eating and it looked fine. Overall a good pub, beers were in good condition, friendly staff, well worth a visit, very enjoyable.

Not the best pub on the Fylde coast. Wide ranging beer range sourced from the length and breadth of Britain, usually 5 beers on. Not kept the best though, regularly line cleaner can be detected in pints. The twice a year beer festivals are worth a visit. Plenty of pub activites, food is standard pub chain grub. Worth a visit, but better places to be found

This is a real example of making the best from what could be an uninspiring pub.
Ok, its not a C16th Coaching Inn, it a post war monster, but the beer is excellent. Always got a serious range of 6 or more casks, including some from Micro's.
The staff are always very friendly and the food is your standard pub grub.
I like it alot. A guilty pleasure 8/10

Agree with all the previous reviews. The beer festival is the best non-CAMRA in the for miles around and well worth a visit, (or 2 or 3!).

The Shovels is a pub that puts you at ease as soon as you walk in. The staff know how to serve with a smile, and with Helen and Steve in charge, it just gets better and better!

Is it worth a visit? I should coco! Bus stop right outside, great food & enough choice of beer to sink a battleship, they even have lager for the wimps and wine for the ladies.
|
This pub is still one of the best in the area. Steve the landlord is very friendly (but don't knock Middlesborough!!). It also is well known for the standard of food wgich is down to the chef, Ben

The Shovels is not only the best real ale pub in Blackpool, it's also just about the best pub. The food service is also terrific. The landlord is extremely knowledgeable and his staff are all well trained in pulling beer correctly. The #14 bus from he town centre will drop you at the door. So you've no excuse.

I heard this place was pretty good and won a local CAMRA award a couple of years ago. Anyone know what its like now, is it worth a visit?
