We booked and were treated to a truly delicious meal, by genuinely caring staff. It was unbelievable value with and we'd happily return for this sort of service. Bare wood tables and floor gives this wonderful city centre pub a clean and natural feel. This is not a boozer with food, or a restaurant with drinks....its a relaxed environment that perfectly balances needs of eaters and drinkers without making either feel unwelcome. Stroll on...

Visited the Elephant with no prior knowledge about it. Had a meal Saturday evening 6th Nov 2010. Very warm friendly service from Ben and his team. Very pleasant setting with open fire. Food - one rib eye steak and one lamb dish were delicious. All reasonably priced too. A refreshing change from the normal "pub" venues. Couldn't fault it!

A pleasant enough pub situated a short stroll away from the hustle and bustle of Corn Street and the centre. The colour scheme is an unusual sandy shade, which in some ways gives it more of a Moroccan restaurant feel than your traditional pub. Besides that there is plenty of wood with a stripped floor and some chunky wood tables and heavy benches.
There was a plasma up in the corner but this was not on when we visited although it looks as though they are showing all the Six Nations matches. There was a fire roaring away which was a nice touch on a cold evening. Staff seemed friendly and helpful and the barmaid could easily get a job as a model.
There was an extensive menu with a good selection of light bites, mains, burgers and pizzas, although the service seemed a little slow. The main courses are a step up from your basic pub grub, with most of them being somewhere around the �10 mark. The Lamb Rump with Saut�ed Potatoes was very good and the accompanying salad with Bacon Lardons was unusual. The African curry was slightly less successful � good, decent chunks of chicken, but a very runny sauce and not a great deal in the way of flavour. There was also an �optional� 10% service charge added to the bill which I don�t really expect in a pub.
Beers on tap were Timothy Taylor Landlord and two from Cottage Brewing which I�ve not come across before - Champflower Ale and Golden Arrow. There was also a pump for Otter Ale, although this was off when we visited. Ciders were Aspall�s Suffolk and Stowford Press.

popped in yesterday afternoon and I was the only punter there but i guess it was half two on a monday afternoon,as previously mentioned its been refurbed nicely. 4 handpumps but only 2 on offering tt landlord and some cottage muck,turned round was black sheep and adnams,the landlord was divine but at �3.70 a pint it blo#dy should be! 5/10 solely due to the prices

As the previous poster has said, this is now back to being called The Elephant and is very much open. How long it will stay that way is another matter though � it was very quiet on a recent Monday evening with only one other punter in there. Possibly that was on account of the prices being charged - �7.15 for a pint and a Vodka & Coke seems a bit on the expensive side.
The pub itself is pleasant enough with some chunky wooden tables and sandy coloured walls, plus a couple of outside benches. The only beer on offer was Adnams Southwold bitter. There were three other pumps, but these were all off � Brains SA, Black Sheep & Timothy Taylor Landlord. That maybe the result of visiting on a Monday to be fair � the barmaid said they had run out over the weekend and were expecting a delivery the next day. The solitary cider was Aspall�s Suffolk.

This place is very much open, having just been re-vamped by the new owners. Had lunch there yesterday; had a very tasty meat pizza, which was made with dough made on the premises. Excellent flavour, my only criticism would be that it was very large for lunch although priced reasonably for the size (�9). Only had soft drinks due to work, but there is an excellent choice of beers and wines. Will have to try it again in an evening when I can have a couple of beers.

Last time I walked past this place it was closed.
As the other reviewer says, it's a Gay pub, and perhaps Bristol's original one?

Pretty basic, traditional gay pub, but nothing wrong with that.
