Remember this pub OPENING !!! Very sad to see any pub close but when it's played a part in your life, well
|
Boarded up. heartbreaking.
|
JIL online update to paper July edition now reports pub as having closed. Not corroborated.
|
Jazz In London (monthly) April 2012 which is compiled about half way through March lists gigs here on 12, 19 and 26 April so presumably not closing in the immediate. Can you update on current status pls?
|
ALAS....PUB CLOSING? The owners have served notice that they will be boarding up from 26 February (odd date as its a Sunday): presumably means last day of trading = Sat 25/2. The decision date for Richmond Council is 19/1 according to their website.

been there a coupe of times recently still feels like a sixties estate pub. The new landlord is trying hard but the bands are dismal and the jam night terminally dull. Won't go again
|
I went to the Charlie Butler on friday 28 May, a great band were performing, we had a fantastic night. The pub is currently under new management, Crispin and Mila have really brought the pub back to life. Great food, music, and wednesday quiz nights a must. Ive heard about their new tuesday jamming sessions starting on the 8th, sounds brilliant. I have been drinking in the Charlie Butler for a few years now, and im impressed with what they have done with the place. I just want to tell everyone about it! Mortlake really needed somewhere that knocks the cobwebs off and live music with no entrance fee is just what the doctor ordered. Robin Bibi is playing on the 4th of june, im sure i'll be there! Great stuff :)

Crispin and Mila Mallett will be taking over the CHARLIE BUTLER on Tuesday 06 April 2010. We have run a number of pubs around the country and aim to create a relaxed atmosphere welcoming locals, walkers and visitors. We shall offer a range of REAL ALES, WINES, SOFT DRINKS, etc with BREAKFASTS, LUNCHES AND EVENING MEALS. We shall run advertised events and have TWO BARS and outside SEATING AREAS. The RIVER THAMES is literally just over the road ( Mortlake High Street) and less than 10 minutes walk from both BARNES BRIDGE BR station and MORTLAKE BR station. The decor is pleasant 1960's. All are welcome. Give us a try!!

I have to report that contrary to the crapulous review below this one, written on the 21st of April 2008, this place is certainly still open. Some of the front windows are smashed so maybe the demolition crew were stopped at the last minute or maybe some drunken shithead just decided it would be fun to smash something.
The pub is split into two with a plasma screen on both sides and a pool table on one and a dartboard on the other, a match made in heaven if you ask me. Sky Sports feed was playing whilst I was there and I didnt spot any football advertised, but I would be surprised if they didnt show it. There are a couple of benches outside the front of the pub by the car park and there is also some covered seating around the side of the pub.
Youngs Ordinary and Special were available whilst I was there, but the Winter Warmer was off. There is also a selection of standard lagers along with Strongbow and Guinness. I was the only person in the pub during lunchtime, but the barman was friendly and I liked the layout and general feel of the place.
This is the sort of pub I would meet the lads in for a good old session.

Another one bites the dust. Apparently this is shortly to be demolished to make way for yet more flats/housing.
|
I think the previous contributor may find that his wish has been granted.
The for let sign has now been taken down and new tenants seem to be in situ.
The pub has not been refurbished again - it still has that Youngified chain pub feel that was forced on it several years ago ( see my previous posting ), but there now seems to be a better atmosphere. I caught the last 20 mins or so of the Chelsea - Arsenal game yesterday afternoon.
As regular readers of my scribblings may recall, one of the John Bonser acid tests of pub evaluation is " what's the atmosphere like when there's a Chelsea game showing?". They passed the test comfortably.
There's now food more readily available. The Youngs bitter was in good nick. Interesting to note the availability of Deuchars IPA as a guest.
To conclude, this is not one of my favourite Youngs pub by a long chalk, but it certainly seems better than it was
|
Very rough, not a good atmosphere. Can someone do something to this place? Such a shame

As I drove past it today, I noticed it was up for let. I think this is a new sign.
|
A belated report, as I was in the pub whilst it was in midrefurbishment/rebuild, just over a year ago.
The initial pint of Youngs Ordinary was yuck (it was the end of the barrel, but should have been noticed before serving).
An alternative pint of Special was so-so, and a 2nd pint of Ordinary drawn from new barrel - and OK.
The late '60s was being substantially re-furbished, with what looked like almost a complete interior re-build, losing the wonderful striped wallpaper, plush seating, and likely the entrance doors in almost a Watneys style 'saloon lounge' lettering and frosted glass.
I'll have to find an opportunity to visit it again this year.

Was in here last night. I have been using it for 10 years. I remember the last landlord, I'm glad hes gone, however, his wife could cook. Her specials were worth travelling for. Todays refurbed pub is so much better than before. Dino is typically Italian; charges like the cavalry. But his beer is better, and the pub is more comfortable than before. I didnt try the food but I will next time. Has anybody noticed that the public bar has been retained. This really bucks the trend as far as brewery refurbs go. I wish them well.
|
My visit last night inadvertently coincided with the pub quiz. Youngs have undoubtedly spent a lot of money "improving" this pub, removing the previous 60's feel to the place and trying to attract a younger clientele, yet there was nobody under 40 in there last night !
The pub quiz was quite well attended and the pub is undoubtedly busier than it was pre - furb, but you can't help wondering whether this is more down to a more enterprising and enthusiastic tenant now being in charge rather than the aforementioned drastic and unfortunate refurbishment
|
Finaly managed to get in the old place Tuesday, the refurb is o.k. the food was o.k. so all is well as they say.
p.s. and they had cricket on, so that's even better !!
|
Total shithole!!!! Aggressive and unscrupulous managers, awful clientele (CHAVS ONLY). And this is not the only problem: these chavs are always looking to pick a fight (and lets face it they succeed). They give hell to unfortunate- newcomers (especially the women). Apart from that the pub as a building is shit too (very small + awfully decorated).

I liked the nostalgic stripey wallpaper and the grandmother's front room feel of the place - and I dont much care for foreign bar staff either - but yes, I agree with Chazzles - chuffed that Youngs have decided to keep this pub and that it's still around, let's hope it does well !
|
Good news, nice to know its carrying on
|
This pub has finally had a refurb and looks like it is here to stay. Youngs have done it up nicely and have kept the two seperate bars. The shocking wallpaper is now gone and the new furnishings are mainly brown. The Polish barmaids offer great service and red stripe is on tap, so i'm happy. It attracts a good mix of people and there is always a friendly atmosphere. It is still a proper pub as opposed to most the aweful bars around the area.
|
Still open for business
|
You always feel like a stranger in this pub. Everytime I go in, I get stared at like I shot someone. It is decked out 70's, but it isn't so bad.
|
A real bit of a timewarped old 1970s workingclass London (but with proper beer, i.e. Young's). Gawd bless yer, guvnor! Shame if it gets demolished though.
|
I saw this place opened while at Barnes school so to see it now shutting is very sad. Used to use it with school mates, once old enough of course. As for mr anonymouse from january,it's because it is like it is that it should be saved. It was opened in the late 60's so it's no wonder it looks like your granny's front room from the 70's(live in a pub did she?)
short sighted twonk!!
|
Has approx 6 months to go apparently before its knocked down and replaced by flats, but with a pub / restaurant on the ground floor. Surprised the previous contributor doesn't like the decor - but you cant please everybody all the time. Visit this pub while you can
|
I had walked past the place a number of times and thought each time I'd avoid it like the plauge.hen read the reviews on BITE and decided to give it a go. How wrong I was. From the not too subtle agressive undertones of some of the regulars to the outright racist comments from the guy sitting near by and then the decor that reminded me of my Nan's front room back in the 70's. The sooner they pull this place down the better!

This is my most favorite pub in the whole of London, been drinking here on an off for the last 10 years. If they do close it then there is no god. The best estate pub in the world . I love it Love it Love it

Apparently Youngs are proposing to demolish the pub for conversion into flats ( letter in Richmond and Twickenham Times on 19 November, plus someone told me this in The Old Ship the other day ), so you might want to check its still open before visiting. If it does get pulled down, it will be a sad loss to the neighbourhood community.

Marvellous atmosphere and decor -long may it remain in its present form. It most definitely does not need "refurbishment".
John - 29 Oct 2004 10:54 |
Thank God it's not a gastro pub,far too many of them. I hear they have got live music coming. Fire and Rain are playing on 30th May there, might be worth a look in.It was brilliant on Boat Race day with the Gazebo and barbie outside.

In response to Mortlake needs better pubs, I say Mortlake needs more pubs like this, rather than faux wood characterless boozers like the tapestry. The aging decor adds to its charm & the whole experience is improved further by accomodating & friendly staff.

Oh my god, it's like the time tunnel. Even Austin Powers would feel out of place here.
Looks like the set of Bless This House!
Very odd place....

well, all i can say is that this pub is one of the best i've ever been to. great beers, great atmosphere, great toilets (!) - i'd recommend it to anyone.

Done out like my Grandparents living room. Genius! Good for: The pure surrealism of it.
|
A doctor's waiting room. Boring needs refurbishment and a lot of atmosphere. But please not anothe Gastro pub! too much already. Let's have something different.

Sixties decor and design, about to come under new management (18/9). Currently under temporary management. Pub is named after former head drayman at Youngs. Beer is great Former landlord was an arsehole but his wife did great food - dressed crabs a speciality. See what happens in the near future!
