such a promising refurbishment however , alway say they are full when most tables are not in use. garden very untidy . staff overwhelmed or smoking most of the time . what a shame . same happen when to was refurbished last time a few years ago.

At the time of the last review it was actually a Marstons Inn, which probably tells you all you need to know about the beer..
However, since then the pub has been sold by Marstons to an independent company, has undergone a major refurb, changed its name and has completely different beers to Marstons on offer..
However, you have to go to a more updated pub review website than this one to find all that out..

Well, so much for the food...........but what about the beer??

I'd heard that The Hedgehog had improved dramatically from the woeful reviews it had been getting on this site, so after an absence of about 18 months I thought I'd give it another chance. It obviously isn't used to being busy as half the pumps are covered with tea towels and are not used. We were greeted and seated very quickly, (there were only 8 people eating and nobody drinking at the bar) drinks were bought to the table quickly by a pleasant young waitress. It then took 15 minutes for a very peed off young man to take our order, and almost an hour for it to appear from the kitchen. My steak was very well cooked. My partners fish pie, however, was bland and accompanied by a handful of reheated frozen green beans. I don't know how they would cope if they were busy! To sum up, they are getting some things right, but have a very long way to go if they want to attract more customers. Maybe in another 18 months.......... if it's still open...........

Well it's very easy to criticise when things are less than perfect, because things are generally never perfect, and some of the previous comments on this Pub could've easily put me off yes. But I stuck with comments gained from another website which were more up to date, and took a chance. I'm glad I did, because although far from perfect, The Hedgehog was actually a very Good experience. The room was very nice and clean and everything worked. The pub itself made for a very pleasant rustic atmosphere (it felt good in there), and the food although not all things were available, was extremely well cooked and tasty. There were staffing Issues but they were being addressed at that time so I can see it hopefully getting better again. The Lady manageress who I think was german was very passionate about completing the turn around from over a year ago. It seems to me she has improved it a fair bit already. All in all a very good experience, some little things here and there might need adjusting, but I believe it's worth giving it a try. at the moment this pub sits in the 2.6 range on here which is clearly wrong after my experience. It deserves better and I wish it well as it is essentially a very nice building, with clean looked after rooms and very good food topped off with pleasant helpful staff.

Came here a few times at the turn of the century when they had a bar billiards table (albeit one of the narrow, unplayable ones). Unfortunately the strong smell of food is intrusive and inescapable, especially if you have no wish to eat !

Being my nearest local pub, I have been to the Hedgehog a few times. I have also previously had several disappointing meals there. Despite my past experiences, I decided to go for a meal there with a friend last night. It is convenient and I always live in hope that there will have been an improvement. I was encouraged by the fact that there appears to have been a change in management since I was last there in January when I had a miserable re-heated Sunday lunch (late on a Sunday afternoon) which included burnt Yorkshire puddings, leathery meat and very mushy veg. Despite it being a Friday evening, it was not very busy. I ordered a glass of red wine which I returned as it was clearly off. The second glass I was given was also sour-tasting and had come from another bottle which was already opened but had been re-corked. I believe that the second glass of wine was just stale but I didn't want to drink it. The food we ordered was awful - the 'hot' chicken curry was not hot and tasted very strongly of just cumin and nothing else. My pasta 'special' was stodgy, the sauce was horrible and the garlic bread was so hard I couldn't bite into it and it had no garlic flavour at all. The only reason I give this pub a rating of as much as 3 is because our waitress was very good. She was clearly embarrassed and did what she could to give us good service and apologise for the shortcomings. This pub should be a little gold mine - the location is good and the building itself is pleasant - but needs a massive improvement in the food to realise its potential.

Visited this pub on 15/01/2010, arriving at 19:45 with two friends. When we arrived the pub was relatively quiet.
Disappointingly I did not read the reviews of this pub that have previously been logged on this website. Even more disappointingly the pub managed to live up to all the reviews that have been posted.
It took twenty minutes from being seated until our order was taken, with two tables that were seated after us having their orders taken before us. We ordered;
Fisherman's Pie - I have yet to meet a fisherman who uses instant mashed potatoes to top their pie, but this hasn't stopped the Hedgehog with this culinary revolution. Clearly hadn't been freshly prepared, and you're likely to find more fish in the rivers around chenobyl than were in this pie - but both had similar, nuclear qualities.
Butternut squash risotto - despite taking 30 minutes to prepare, and even I can knock together a reasonable risotto in 30 minutes, what was served had more in common with rice pudding than risotto.
Gammon: Mediocre, would have made a good frisbee though - if necessary.
Duck (off the specials board): The vegetables served with the duck had been morphed together - quiet an achievement to make a brussel sprout taste like red cabbage. My wife described the duck as average.
Following our main meal it took 20 minutes to clear the dirty crockery, at which point we were given the desserts menu. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to take our dessert order we gave up and left.
Summary - Food is woefully poor but, not to be outdone, the service is shockingly poor.

Never again. The previous post comparing this place to Fawlty Towers is spot on. Although we didn't stay, there were 12 of us dining during midweek (the far superior Dukes Head was full). Food was cold, plates were dirty and the service was disgraceful. Some diners had finished before others had started! We'd had enough of this farce by the time some of the puddings arrived on dirty plates(those of us that actually got their puddings!), and asked for the bill. Portions aren't great either for the price. I must admit the manager did adjust the bill, but that's not what you go for. Half of us went home for something else to eat. No-one from this group will be returning, shame because it has much more going for it.

What a DIRE pub. Called in on 20 June on the London Brighton Bike run. They had sold out of most draught beer and said they were "too busy" to change a barrel. Seemed the manager has no skills to do that - he certainly wasn't interested in his "busy" pub or clients, just in talking to the bar staff and counting the till takings. They deserve to fail with standards like that. Just don't bother to even call in. We were so appalled we left without bothering to buy a drink. Something about this area - the Dog and Duck up the road has just been closed and boarded up.

oops had the mis-fortune to stay at the new faulty towers joke from start to finish, manageress and manager rowing in receiption for 5 mins while i wait to check inn, then have to deal with sour face manageress at dinner and breakfast wont be staying again which is shame as rooms are nice and food was pretty good!!!!
