Middle of the road pub, not a bad place to watch the footy but only had GK IPA.

Not a bad gaff, beer is ok, prices as good as anywhere, clientele, seem for the main part, ok. Main whing is it's too dark, atmoshere is fine but it's like drinking in a coal shed. I know electric isn't cheap but c'mom now, nice to be able to see what your drinking.

The worst pub in the golden triangle, its only saving grace is that it's quite cheap for the area

Ah, the Mitre, the pub where I pulled my future wife for the first.
But dont worry I`m going to forego any sentimental shite or cheap gags about wanting to spray the place with machine gun fire (yes dear, if you are reading this that was a joke. Obviously) and get straight into the review of this pretty good pub.
Like most boozers in Norwichs Golden Triangle area (a mostly terraced suburb close to town that is packed full of post first year Uni students) it manages to avoid being sucked into the trap of becoming a commercialised student dive. I`m not sure why Norwich manages to side step this nightmarish pitfall that seems to effect most other bars in student dominated areas maybe the good people of Norfolk just have a greater attachment to their souls?
Whatever the cause, The Mitre preserves a natural deep wooden old pub feel across a winding interior that wraps itself around the central bar starting with a good sized pool room through to two reasonably (and oddly shaped) drinking areas. The walls are adorned with a dizzying array of brass ornaments and slightly classical posters/pics, although this nod to crusty publand is slightly offset by a cracking jukebox and a good tap selection that supplies a good range of bottled yungens drinks. This latter point probably indicates that despite drawing on what for the most part is a non-student clientele the Mitre still has an eye on local students, as demonstrated by a few annoyingly bright drink ads at the bar and a student night during the week. Be warned, while most UEA students are, thankfully, fully paid up members of the human race, the Mitres cheap night does tend to attract the UEA rugby team do I really need to say more?
For me though this last point is a minor blemish, but unfortunately indicative of a spate of minor flaws that just scrape the shine off the Mitre. I`ve always, for example, found the staff a little bit cold (something others have noted) and occasionally a bit on the slow and rude side. The Mitres beer garden too is a disappointment, basically composing a couple of uncomfortable wooden tables/chairs set openly within a few feet of the main road sorry but I just dont enjoy drinking a pint with a layer of car fumes caked to the top. And to end my whinge, I wish they`d find the volume control on that jukebox sometimes
These are old woman type complaints but for me they are enough to drag the rating of the Mitre down to a still good 7/10

This is a really welcoming pub, great prices, perfectly served drinks, log fire and lively atmosphere. Free minibus to the city on a Friday night, a great quiz on a sunday night, free to enter with good prizes. Would definetly recommend this pub to anyone. Give it a visit - put it on your pub crawl list and you may end up staying in here all night!
