Pub has been refurbished but still lacking in any sense of welcome or good service. Visited for lunch on Mother's Day, which is a day that you'd expect pubs to be rammed with Mother's enjoying their special lunches but this was half empty. One barmaid serving and she is a bit on the miserable side. Burger and pint deal is well priced but some clientele are a mixed bunch, especially the old geezers who think it's acceptable to swear loudly. Can't wait for the Dark Star pub to open up in the Broadway and have somewhere decent to drink!

A great post by Chimpboy!
I popped in last Thursday for a quick beer, not my home town so hadn't been in for a while, it used to be my "work" pub but that was prior to the Greene King makeover, bring back the Flowers Original!
Anyway, Greene King IPA and Darkstar Hophead were on. I do like my beer darker, so poor old Hophead is about as far away from beer as I want to be, but cater for all. Then there was Abbot, playing for a cricket club sponsored by GK I can try that regularly anyway.
So, I was left with Timothy Taylor's Landlord, never been a favourite but that said, nothing wrong with it either.... BUT, hang on, this looks rather pale, could it be their Golden Ale with the wrong clip? What's the point of that and Hophead both being on...? Then the most miserable barmaid just about mumbled £3.85, if you are asking that for it, at least have the good grace to smile!
Haywards Heath has stacks of bars, but not many good pubs, this used to be my choice of them all, I would certainly now choose the improved Burrell over this one!

Decent beer at good prices -- Hophead is on, and nothing seems to be over £r3.50. The interior is neither cramped not barn like, neither fussily olde-world nor starkly modern. I have always considered this one of the better bets in a not particularly great town for pubs.

It's on the slide, uncollected glasses, sticky surfaces, bucket collecting drips in the gents, tatty signs warning of loose toilet seats in ladies.
|
This is a Greene King pub, so don't expect a friendly welcome, or indeed any sign that the manager takes any pride in the pub. Since a makeover a couple of years ago the bar area does have a slightly more spacious feel, which is important as this pub was designed by an idiot. There's a lot to be said for the fact that this place is not any of the moronic bars further down the street; and there's no other decent pub in the town centre, so you're kind of stuck if you don't want to brush shoulders with a gel-encrusted ape.

I like it here, a proper old Victorian pub among the plethora of bland bars.
|
my wife and I spent christmas day there for lunch. We had the most wonderful 4 course meal in very pleasant surroundings and were looked after like royalty by the superb staff there. We have been there before for evening meals which were always good hot and fresh. This Christmas Day lunch topped the lot - wonderful -- could not have asked for better!! Our thanks to the staff for putting themselves out forus.

DelBoy2008 = Greene King employee.

the star so much more welcoming for new people to the area than it was before the refurb ,it has a really good menu and a great selection of cask ales .All the staff have always been very freindly and welcoming .It seems some people are only happy when moaning.

Greene King have seriously shot themselves in the foot here, and ruined this pub in spectacular style.
I used to go in here every lunchtime and it would be busy on a regular basis, I would say at least 25-35 people pub and garden combined.
Since the rufurb, the prices have SHOT up, around 30p a pint approx and there are no customers. These days if you pop in there at lunchtime, you are likely 1 of around 2 or 3 other people.
I am glad that this has'nt worked for Greene King, greedy bastards.
There was nothing wrong with the pub prior to the refurd, it was a proper pub.
Why did'nt they ask the regulars if they thought anything needed changing.
There is only so long you can stay open when you are clearly making a loss Greene King.
P.S. The new Landlady could seriously do with going on a course on Customer Service.

The Star since refurb has been a let down, reduce you beer prices, and better staff attitude!!! also smoking ban make it fair to all smokers, some are allowed to smoke out front and others are told to go in beer garden
|
I agree wholeheartedly with 'thehiddenone'...on my first visit I came in through the open front door and was promptly yelled at to "shut the f**king door" behind me. The beer is good, but why bother when the 'locals' are such lovely people?
|
I have been in on quite a few occasions, usually to watch sport. It can be a bit hit and miss but given the competition, is about the best offering in Haywards Heath, the beers (all Greene King) are competitively priced and well maintained. They sometimes seem short-staffed. Have never eaten here but the food doesn't appeal for some reason!
|
I used to drink in here when dear old Cecil Cork was landlord in the 1970's. It always served the best pint in The Heath then and it still does.
|
I think some people are missing the point with this pub. It is very much a beer drinker's pub and as such, serves a good selection of beers.
I have only eaten here once before and it was nothing to write home about, but I have sampled the beer here on many occasions and have no complaints at all.
There has been some criticism of the staff too, which I don't understand. I have always found them to be friendly and efficient.
Haywards Heath isn't over burdened with good pubs and this is by far the best from a beer drinker's point of view.

Get looked at like i have two heads when i go in here, locals pub maybe. Bar staff miserable. Will not be returning.

Thre were 3 of us who came here for lunch on September 23rd 07. The car park was poorly signposted The only car park said 'staff cars only' .We had to park in the public car park and one of us was a wheelchair user. We ordered meals. The food took more than 45 minutes to arrive with no explanation as to why . The food was awful - the worst pub meal we have ever had. The chips were inedible and greasy, scampi was like bullets, chicken Mexicana just a mess on plate and the lasagne served without side salad which they then brought. No effort to offer refund or apology.

Went here recently during a couple of lunchtimes. Found the bar staff on both occasions sour-faced and impolite. Did not feel welcome at all.
|
Cracking old fashioned pub with mainly friendly folk and the best boozer in a town of 'trendy' (see poncy) wine bars with pretentious dress codes etc etc. good work fellas
|
Tried it last Friday; was hopeful, but was smoky, noisy and stale tasting "Dark Star" beer - I could not finish my pint and my pal left his altogether.
|
Do not go to this pub if you are an off duty police officer they only ask you to leave, however the beer is ok
|
Best "proper pub", as opposed to "bar" that I've tried in the town, a real honest-to-goodness town centre boozer which, as a result, doesn't appeal to everyone. Decent well kept beer - had a great pint of Landlord last week.
Many outside tables with a view of the main road - doesn't do food early evenings but very handy for a whole selection of eateries. and yes it is a very big umbrella.
|
Good staff, average food, good beer, always packed on a friday night. Definately beats the Burrell Arms
|
Awright dawwlin!!!!!! The Star is the best pub I've ever been to in my whole life! The BEST BEER The BEST STAFF The BEST REGULARS!!! And the biggest sun umbrella in the world!!

I enjoy a nice pint in the Star form time to time. Even with the new, more hip places like Bar Boo and Orange Square which are always massively over-crowded, the star gives u a place to relax and enjoy a pint which is by far the best quality in Haywards HeathSt Patricks Day is always a cracking laugh too!

The Star is easily the best pub in Haywards Heath. Good real ale and a pleasant cross section of the community but without the rough element. Plenty of atomosphere which has not been too badly damaged by becoming a Hogshead pub. Also many outside tables. A good place to meet friends before heading off for one of the many eating establishments in the area.

The Star is a real pub, the only one in Haywards heath. It manages to cater for everyone aged 18 to well over 80. It still has regulars that have been coming in for a pint or two just about every day for the last 40 odd years and all the 'nicer' young crowd! (A scuffle is virtually unheard of!) No children inside, which makes for a better pub atmosphere and plenty of choice when it comes to beer. Always at least five ales (The harveys is the best in town) four good lagers and half decent plonk! The music is (nearly always) of very good taste. The staff often play their own cds, as, thankfully, there's no juke box. In the daytime the music is only played in the 'public' bar end, so, if you really do want to have a quiet pint, you can. To summarise, a quality honest pub, where you'll feel welcome whether you've been drinking there for 40 years or you've just walked in! (The old ginger barmaid is weird, that's the only bad point about the pub!)
