Called in on holiday by recommendation and visited all of the rest of the week afterwards.
Whilst I cannot comment on the previous comments due to spending most of the time in the beer garden due to the weather I can say that we found the staff most helpful. The food was slightly overpriced for a pub lunch but on the other hand the Chicken and Leek pie was fantastic and well worth the money. The poppadoms with the curry were also the best i've tasted.
After that we never looked to visit elsewhere.

What has happened to this amazing pub?
It appears the charming landlord has moved on.
The food used to be 5 Star but this is no longer the case.
Maybe they are using a new supplier or have a new chef on board, as the meat has become terrible.

A quick summary:

Poor service (not very friendly at all now, in fact it was rather unwelcoming). The cocky barman did not impress our group of 9.
The food is terrible, In used to crave the Mixed Grill, not anymore.

I apologise if this post offends anyone but the new owners need to buck up..

An attractive place, still retaining very much the atmosphere of a pub despite clearly placing a heavy emphasis on food. The food can be expensive, but at lunchtime at least there were very reasonable alternatives on the menu, and the quality was good. A fair selection of beers; the Hook Norton I had was OK but no more. We certainly didn't find the staff rude or unhelpful - in fact quite the contrary. For those who are interested, the pub is dog-friendly.

Dropped in mostly for food, but beer was great with a good range, both ultra local and imaginatively selected ones from further afield. Enjoyed a Hook Norton and one other which has slipped my mind. Food was very good, not cheap, but I wouldn't say terribly costly. Only downside was the barman seemed pretty rude and offhand. I'd still definitely go there again, still.

Food is good but overpriced, reasonable choice of beer but overpriced. Totally agree with crateman about the landlord; Guy is so offensive that I rarely use the pub (and it's within walking distance). I saw a table tell the waiter that they didn't want puddings but would have coffee. When the coffees were bought out Guy had a go at the waiter - in the middle of the bar area - because he hadn't tried to sell puddings to that table.
TO BE AVOIDED

My wife and I recently visited this pub with some Australian friends and agree that the building, food service and beer were very good.
However, the landlord is an absolute disgrace. On discovering that we are from Leicestershire, he made several rascist comments about the ethnic mix in Leicester, which were very embarrassing. This only got worse when he turned his attention to our friends. He claimed that Australians had got it right by attempting to irradicate the Aboriginal population, suggesting shooting and castration as his preferred means of extermination.
We were appalled by his statements and by his assumption that we would agree simply because we are white. We will certainly not return.

What a great find this place was, locals are lucky to have this on their doorstep. We had the good fortune of staying 50yds up the road. Excellent choice of ales, there were some local ones from Cheltenham, one from Exeter and Westons Country Perry on handpump, worth visiting just for this. Ales seemed to rotate regularly, also saw Sharps Doombar and Cornish Coaster later in the week. Food plays a major part but not at all to the detriment of the traditional pub atmosphere, and was very tasty and well presented. Good country garden for the summer months. Attentive landlord and friendly bar staff round the place off, if you're in the area it's well worth a visit, but if you plan to eat then book to avoid disappointment.
