Reopened under new management this week. Deceptively spacious with a raised bar area to the front and good use of a railway arch to the rear which has been fully incorporated into the building. The fire escape map shows a large function room as well but I haven't seen it. Good range of beer including local brewery Southey, some Adnams and London Beer Factory. Slightly controversially serves in 2/3rd glasses rather than pints but I have to say I like that. Tres European. Absolutely rammed the first time I went in, like a crèche in the early afternoon but a really great locals atmosphere in the evening. Feels like a real destination place at the moment. They will be serving food but the kitchen isn't finished yet. They seem to be growing a large number of plants under the railway arch which makes for interesting decor. Glass of Beyond The Pale was £3. Very good.

CLOSED, but scheduled to reopen in January 2017 to be run by Late Knights
|
Still closed but has been taken over by Penge microbrewery Late Knights (Beer Rebellion in Sydenham, also have pubs in Brockley and Brighton). New windows in, scheduled to reopen this year.
|
I still miss it, despite becoming a regular at the Pawleyne, which I enjoy.
|
The Alexandra closed down last night. I shall miss it.

This Wednesday sees the first of the Alexandra Pub's "Pointless" quizzes. Based upon the popular TV show it promises to be a great event!
The karaoke on the weekend nights goes from strength to strength and the pub's karaoke hosts are continually increasing their number of songs available to sing. Sunday karaoke gets very busy.
There's a new internet jukebox - it even has Welsh choir music available and stacks of popular music from 1940s to the present day (and a good Bill Haley selection - which suits me!).
|
The quiz night is due to take place on September 19th. Hosted by Andrew T, it is always a good night.
|
Lee Rivers will be appearing in a tribute to Elvis Presley tonight at 8pm in the upstairs function room - entry 2. I saw him a few months ago and he was very entertaining.
Also Fever karaoke often now do Saturday nights, meaning that you can join in with their superior quality sound system and songbook 2 nights, rather than just on Sundays.
Fever host Andrew T (Feverman) also does a monthly quiz night here which I enjoy. The next one is on Wednesday November 23rd. 1 entry (max 4 quizzers in a team) and the winning team gets the money in the pot! Great night out!

Youngian - try the Guinness. It's generally good.

Enjoyed the hapless karoke and some friendly faces for someone who is new in the area. The huge smoking area, under a railway arch, does smell a bit of damp and mould. By the taste of the badly kept bitter I think that it is where they have been storing it.

Still going strong, despite the worst recession in living memory (except the last one). Yes, there are still some dodgy characters, but that is mostly what they are - characters. It's what every good locals' local needs, and makes for a really good atmosphere. The Karaoke still happens every Saturday and Sunday, with occasional disco/singers on Fridays, and a Quiz on a Wednesday once a month. Watch out also for special events (like the Burns night celebration on Tues 25th Jan!). Give the pub a chance - and that's what the locals will do for you. Have an attitude, and yes, I'm sure you'll get a hostile reception. (I notice Tonyjo never came back!)

I used to love going in this pub, back in the day when Joyce, Julia and Jamie were behind the bar. Loads of dodgy characters but a great night out for sure. Must get back in soon.

Have spent rather a lot of time (and money) in pubs from as soon I was old enough to get away with it and it is a fact that you just have to keep on returning to the Alex. Yes you do get strange people and yes it could do with a makeover, but couldn't we all. I didn't realise we went to the pub to view the decor. The landlord cannot be blamed for someone spilling beer on a carpet. The last fight I saw in the Alex was when the Dave the boxer ran it around 10 years ago. My dad who is 78 also drinks in the pub regularly as did my mum until her recent demise. The beer is always in good nick condition and as for the karaoke singers of which I am one, the comments of this chappie Tonto are a load of rubbish. I think he is on a different planet. Why doesnt he come down and announce himself to us all and we can watch him sing. Should be a laugh. Hi Ho Silver Away

This is a very friendly pub and all are welcomed there, im not sure when tonyjo came in but they have totally got it wrong. as for the decor it is very basic and there is nothing wrong with the carpet.

Sorry penge71, but this is simply the worst pub you can imagine. You really should be put off by the 'slum' exterior decoration which just continues inside. You'll know you're inside as the carpet sticks to your shoes.Youare then 'greeted' by the ugliest and surliest bar staff you are ever likely to meet, and who will totally ignore you over the regulars. Warning, don't try and maintain eye contact with anyone, you'll be on your back in moments - it really is like a pack mentality in there. Also steer well clear of the 'karaoke nights' where (regulars only) will attempt to destroy any song you wish, although it's usually the same old crones who think they're great - just try and slip out while they're on. You won't regret going anywhere other than here!!

Nice Pub with a Traditional Decor. Well maintained and kept. But you tend to get quite few local "hard men" in there, boxers, etc. Which is not a bad thing. Overall a good local pub! Regards to the previous poster: I wouldn't say the decor is "run down" or even dated, it's just a traditional no-nonsense pub. As I said, clean & tidy. Nice cosy atmosphere.

Come and see the "Stars In Their Eyes" karaoke competition on Saturday 11th November at the "Alex". Starts 8pm.

This pub is a very special and magical place. One of those stories from a book, met my now partner on a train from Victoria, got off at Penge (where we both lived) and went for a drink there as it was the closet pub open before it shut for the night. It was quiet, we had one drink then they did a lock in (without asking us, they must have assumed we needed some quality time..) and we were left to get to know each other, 2 hours later they chucked us out..anyway, the rest is history and we are still together, 2 years and 3 months later. If it wasn't for this pub we may not have had the opportunity to know each other. Other than that, it is a regulars pub, and we havn't been back since !

Only regulars fit in here..and karaoke is not that good..very run down and dated decor

Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night with host Kevin (Castle Karaoke) whose large songlist and camp comedy guarantee a laugh. Karaoke every Sunday night with Liz and Andrew (Fever Karaoke), who have the second largest songbook in the country with some 18,000 tracks and a superb sound system. Sunday gets very packed and its not unusual to have over 20 different singers (many of them high quality) taking part during the evening. A fantastic way to spend the weekend.

good atmosphere, great live music, karaoke, darts, champion pool team. Singers, music lovers and drinkers always made welcome
