Irish-run pub just off the Market Square in Doncaster. It has quite a traditional feel. Hurling is shown live on the TV. The front bar is narrow, but atmospheric and there are a few characters. Ales were Tetleys Cask, Theakston Old Peculier, Timothy Taylor Landlord & Sharps Doom Bar.

My 3rd visit to Donny in the last year and time to take new pubs in.
I popped in the 'spoons across the market but it was packed and there was not enough staff on so i came over to the Mason's.
I only went in the front bar and had a pint of Golden Sheep, which was okay more than good. A couple from Sheffield who were in town for the racing claimed about their John Smiths. The barman went and got the landlord who afer changing the barrel tasted the pints and said he thought they were okay. The couple were still not happy so he just told the barman to give them a couple of fresh pints..this was very good I thought as he knew there was nothing wrong with the beer that it was probably the glasses.
Stopped for just a pint but I found the place to be okay.

I hadn't been in The Masons for years so I was pleased to see it hasn't changed very much with the little front bar being the place to be. I understand that the back room has been "done-up" but I didn't go there so can't give an opinion. What was good was that it was cheery with a decent pint of beer (Tetleys and Landlord) and free bar nibblies!! I appears to open very early on market days and has a few tables outside so you can sit and watch the comings-and-goings of the market stalls. I had no hassle whatsoever so perhaps it changes its character in the evenings and at weekends? but I will certainly go back again when next in Donny.

Called into this pub at the weekend.... the front bar is great... a trip back in time to what tap rooms used to be like. The back room has as the previous post says been done up a little.... it was all very modern. However, if this pub had been in Manchester it would have been full and real ale and modern decor now seem to go hand in hand.. there is even a huge tented area around the back ready for summer ale festivals and groups etc. I sampled a pint of TT Landlord which was good order.... the pub was busy (ish) but appears to suffer because its on the wrong side of the market place as they say.... this pub should be full of decent people, having a decent pint and a good night out.... I will defo call in again and its now on my list of pubs to visit when in Doncaster...

Should be one of the best pubs in Doncaster, however, in the few years that it's been since I last visited, things have not gone well. The pub still has two distinct rooms, with the room to the front near the Markets still feeling old and cosy. A great pub like this, should however be treasured, and the room at the rear, though pleasant enough with its real fire, appears to have been 'modernised' a little too much, as it now sports flock wallpaper and leather setees. This would be great in some pubs, but not one as old as this, and for me it's just the first step towards spoiling what was a retreat from the modern world. The beer range was reasonable, however, spoilt somewhat after we trod in some dog s***. This had clearly been left there, and not 'walked in'. If you are going to allow dogs in, then at least make sure they don't leave something behind.

Great Real ale pub - with up to 5 pumps on. 4 are normally mainstream (eg Bombardier) and then 1 guest ale. Beautifully kept/served beer though, well worth visit!.
