please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Apparently Tesco have bought the site and this pub is soon to be a goner. No real loss judging by their (lack of) real ale selection.

good food and great bar staff, a good selection of beers and ales also live music on friday nights. what else would you want?
I'll admit a was a little dubious about this pub after such a mixed bag of reviews but my friend convinced me it was worth a visit last weekend. I was most pleasantly surprised! Pub looks great, and the patio garden is gorgeous - will definitely be taking advantage of that in summer. No sawdust in sight! Received a very warm welcome from staff, despite being very much a non regular, and the food was delicious, and reasonably priced. Perfect place to hole up on a cold afternoon. Don't live in the area but will be making an effort to visit more often.
Following my earlier review and the arrival of new management things sadly haven't improved. Food takes an age to arrive and arrives cold and the staff in general are bordering on open hostility to non-regulars. Needless to say we won't be returning.
I've been drinking in this pub for a number of years, and can now say the pub has completely changed around since being under new management since the end of October. The pub once again has a friendly atmosphere for regulars and new customers alike, and the staff will go out of their way to make sure you have a good experience. There is more of a buzz about the place thanks to bringing back in live sports and the introduction of live music on Friday nights. With Robyn & Shane bringing in their own chef, the food has massively improved due to proper home cooked food. Having just had our Christmas meal/party here, i can say that the food was excellent and would recommend the pub to anyone who wants to eat here or just go for a drink. A really good pub!

nevermind that cobblers son, that keef geez is a poofter right?
The problem with this establishment (and clearly obvious by the low ratings above) is the staff appear to be working to rule. On my limited visits I've found them openly hostile to non-regulars and constantly berating the fact the powers that be are attempting to make improvements to the pub. My advice is if you don't like where you work don't work there; simples.
What a load of c""". Keith doesn't work on a Monday. Teressa doesn't work there (2 years now) sort from the odd fill-in time The place is not nor ever has been a spit and sawdust place - the last refurb a few years back put sofas and armchairs in None of the managers in the last 10 Tera has had a foreign or catalogue bride
This all sounds like the ramblings of a moron with no idea or has ever visited the pub and is just using things they have found out
Does this Keith guy speak English. It was a Monday and asked a a menu. He said something that made no sense. I looked blank so he just started spoke more loudly in a voice the suggested I was an idiot? Pointed out there's a sign outside saying "Food served all day" but no sure he can read
That's Keith and Teresa Brown squire, twisted fag ash starters if ever there were one or one point five judging by their guttage. Fat bar stewards. And they are! Of this very establishment although not for much longer bless the brewery.
I see very little to gripe about here; the pub as it is is run by inbreds for inbreds and any possible changes that deter this kind of scum can only be for the better. I recall reading an article about it on the GetReading website and the regulars and staff were semi-coherent rambling and threatening folk who dared suggest they were just a bunch of NIMBYs. Which of course they are amongst being folk from hills.
it would be an improvement seb as spoons don't allow 8 hour smoking breaks with a 15 minute work shift. if that keef geez and his sister packed up puffing the fag industry would go down the pan. no wonder they've got a fire station opposite the boozer with those two constantly chuffing away; walking fire hazards the both of 'em.

Is it true the pub is being bought out by Wetherspoon as reported on GR?
Decent pub. Please ignore the latest four reviews, all posted by Jason, the manager of the Back Of Beyond, who seems to have taken it upon himself to try to increase his own very poor pub's takings by denigrating all other local pubs on multiple sites across the web.
I've always found this pub most accommodating. A decent mix of people, friendly bar staff, reasonable prices (for Reading), and a well-looked after place. You won't go too far wrong here.
Must add, I have no connection to current of previous owners, I'm just a punter who's been going to the Three Tuns on and off for the past 10 years. That I still go is a measure of the place.
Rude staff, tragic beer prices and a distinct aroma of dung in the air. The Woolpack it is not.
Fortunately this pub is about to be given an upgrade to a more family orientated eating establishment. The spit and sawdust approach isn't pulling the customers in and it's really been a local's only venue these last few years. Time for a change methinks.
they need to do something about that king-size keef geez always smoking for starters. he needs to lay off the pies too.
A two roomed largish pub, you have to leave the pub to go into the other bar. Quite comfortable. A couple of real ales, Adnams & Doombar in fairly average condition.
Recently attended a friends birthday party. I'm not normally a great fan of pubs but they definitely have got it right here. The service was superb and the food (hog roast) was one of the most enjoyable meals i have had in a long time. They have three real ales and obviously know what they are doing when it comes to quality.(Doombar fantastic). Sarah the landlady and her partner Keith could not have been more helpful. Thumbs up all round and nice to see a professional job being done.

Had my 30th birthday party here in April 2011. The landlord was great, and kept in touch with me the whole time regarding my requirements. Everyone had a great time, they put a hog roast on (menu 3 on the choices) - people at my party said it was the best hog roast they'd ever had! The landlord sorted out an entertainments licence so I could have a band, the whole day/ night was fantastic. The landlord also sorted out a discounted rate at a nice local hotel, couldn't have asked for any more, 10/10!!

A welcome recent refurbishment of this pub will hopefully turn things round for the trade at a pub which has had mixed fortunes over the years. Adnams Bitter and Shepherd Neame Spitfire on tap at reasonable prices. Both bars look like Lounges and there appear to be no pub games but that may be what the place needs. The 17 bus terminates outside and the pub is handy for the Uni and there are plenty of chimney pots around so it should do well.
this pub has turned its self around .andy has and is doing a great job to make this pub a good place to come and have a drink and a meal it has been re ferbed to a good standard. i recently booked a 70Th birthday party to be held in the pub with a hog roast and all the normal trimmings. this was done to a very high standard it was a very enjoyable event . i would all ways think about using the three tuns for any other event. thank you ande for all you did

This pub is having a refurb and the early signs are looking great. no pool table and all the old original windows and high ceiling have been opened up in the main bar. This had taken it from a bit dark and dingy to a nice big open space The toilets have had a long overdue total makeover. I've been told an exciting new menu is on the way and wine list to. It looks like there really going to have a go at making this a really nice pub.

Beer still OK, but I find the place very uninspiring, doesnt attract too many punters either.
Very few students, even though its right outside the back entrance, a massive untapped market there.
Id much rather walk the extra 10 minutes to the Roebuck.
Decent enough boozer catering for locals and students from the Uni across the street.
Has a couple of beers on (Pride and Courage Best) which were OK.
Nice in summer, the front end is a sun-trap.
Nothing special, but OK for what it is.
Let's be realistic about the 3 Tuns, it's dump!!! The lounge has been decorated in a slapdash manner, white gloss and neon lights, not really lounge bar decor. The gents needs totally refurbishing as tiles have fallen off and plaster is down to bear brick. Service, although improved recently, is only bearly acceptable and the landlord would rather you left the pub than service you himself. Generally a horrible pub.
Has no less than 3 (count them, one two THREE) pool tables - decide for yourself if that's a good thing. Also a dart board.
