We were here Good Friday evening for a meal, and excellent it was too. Either the lamb shank or fish and chips are highly recommended, and with attentive, efficient service. Not a wide selection of draft beers, but there appeared to be more lagers.
There is a good amount of space inside, and there are plenty of tables outside too.
The pub dog is certainly quietly friendly, without being in anyway overbearing.
Definitely recommended.

brilliant pub. nice dark wood feel to the inside. whilst it can feel a bit food orientated, there is a great atmosphere, and the area with the sofa and fireplace tucked around the back of the bar is perfect for a pint or two and to rest your feet.
chiltern ale was 2.90 and the other pints were around the 3 mark, which in this day and age is very welcome. the britannia pale ale, which is berewed at the Royal Standard pub (same owners) is fantastic and only 2.50 a pint.
the service matched the excellent beers.
like the beers and the service, the food was brilliant. pizzas are better than most italian resturants.
whilst the traffic going by cant be helped, when its sunny the outside area is really decent too.
also the pub dog, barney is lovely. he roams the pub lookng for attention and maybe checking out if theres any stray chips under the tables.
will be back.

Quite a pleasant pub with good real ales, but you get the impression that the food is the important thing and drinkers who are not eating are tolerated rather than welcomed and the staff are itching to close up as soon as the last diners have finished.

We've now moved to Coleshill, one of the benefits of which is we've had the pleasure of visiting the Harte & Magpies on many occasions now.
The Cotswold Lagers have been perfect every time, the staff friendly and the general atmosphere has been relaxed and welcoming, with locals and visitors often engaged in conversation - a sign of a good pub I reckon.
The food is good and the portions are generous. Not the cheapest, but certainly not over the top considering the local going rate.
If you don't like dogs or are allergic to them then this probably isn't the place for you as they are pro-actively 'dog friendly' and this means you will inevitably share your visit with some enthusiastic canines.
While neither a hater nor a lover of dogs, this is probably the least attractive thing about the H&M to me - I'm always worried one of the kids steps in a 'surprise' outside - but fair play to them for promoting themselves in a novel way, and of course many will consider this a plus point.
My one improvement suggestion? Move the pub about mile closer to the village so it isn't such a walk!

Ah yes, the ever talented 'daverrm' with yet another quality posting. How is business up at the Royal Standard then Matthew, sorry...'daverrm'? Are there ANY lower levels to which you will not stoop to defend your 'business ventures'?
I'll undoubtedly see you for 'Poetry Reading'....make sure that you raise your prices EVEN HIGHER that night...and don't forget to bung the BFP Reporters a few Pints so that they write another deceitful review.

We stopped in at the Harte & Magpies not long after moving to the area. The beer was fine - can't recall what I picked and as I'm not really a bitter person (yet) I can't really comment on it. It was very pleasant though, certainly not mistreated.
The food was plentiful and good and the general atmospere relaxed and friendly. The kids loved running around in the garden area and overall we enjoyed a very pleasant time there.
One of the better places in the Amersham area. Will definitely be back.
p.s. I rated higher than I would normally to try and offset bitterboy's vitriol. What an apt name!
|
I see "Bitterboy" or "Littleboy" perhaps has been slandering all over this site. I am not the owner of this or any pub, just a punter who enjoys a decent pint and a pleasant pub. I thing the overall rating for the Harte speaks for itself.

An interesting and varied selection of ales and beers which includes local ales. Level of service is good and the staff are friendly. We walked eight miles to get to this pub and it was worth the walk. The food was spot on too.
|
Spent a cracking day in the garden, yesterday. Love this pub. Dog lovers delight. Scrumpy is a perfect host. Keep up the good work guys.
|
Couldn't really detect any atsmosphere in here. Rebellion beer was ok, but you can't go wrong with it. The small coke my friend had must have come in at nearer 2 assuming my beer wasn't over 4. Food looked expensive. Can't think of any reason why I would want to go back here again - not my idea of a pub.
|
I visit this pub frequently. The food is delicious, the beer is well-kept and the atmosphere is lovely. I would recommend it for a relaxed weekend lunch or good evening out.
|
Bitterboy, put up or shut up. I'm nothing to do with the management. I await your apology.
I came to this pub in august because the m25 was solid and I needed a detour. I've come back because I liked the food and drink. I've just had a decent plate of venison, some good duff and an excellent pint of cider.
I maintain my previous opinion. Good traditional cider certainly commands a premium - especially given how many orchards in the UK have been grubbed up to play the farm subsidy game.
|
Super pub, cracking food, lovely atmosphere, friendly and patient staff. A one-off lunch has turned us into regular visitors. One of the best pubs in the area and I would recommend it highly. During the week, the "all day" breakfasts are to die-for!
|
Renamed "Harte and Magpie", from the Mulberry Tree now a traditional pub serving 3 real ales (mainly local brews) reasonable menu mainly pub food with some "game" dishes a tad on the expensive side though.
|
More positive posts by the staff and owner's, in a pathetic attempt to whip up undeserved custom.
'Barbeerian'...in your post you claim to have "popped in for a quick half", yet then go on to claim that you had "a good pint of beer"! So which is it to be then??!
'oddbits'...you claim that you can justify charging ridiculous prices on drinks given the quality? How does that work then? Cask Ale is either kept well...or not! There is no Premium chargeable for selling distinctly average Ale, averagely, I can assure you!
Finally,...
'daverrm'...is that really you, Matthew O'Keefe...Master at manipulating Awards for yourself, and duping various illiterate Hacks that work for the Bucks Free Press?? Are you sure?? 'cos we all KNOW that it's really YOU....you complete TIT!

Enjoyed the Beer Festival last weekend. Great selection of local ales.
Please, do it again!
|
Just had a cracking pint of cider and good food with it. Price is high but well worth it given the quality of food and drink.
I'll be back.
|
Had a quick half on the way to a funeral. Made welcome at lunchtime and had a good pint of beer.
|
It comes to something when the only people that try to paint a picture of this overpriced rip-off are the Staff and Management alike...very sad!
IS THE MESSAGE GETTING THROUGH PEOPLE? NOBODY HAS A GOOD WORD TO SAY ABOUT YOUR RIP-OFF RESTAURANT....SIMPLES!!
|
Went to the pub on the weekend, had a great time. Live music was on in the evening, the place was buzzing. The food was fantastic. Will be back there soon.
|
Quite.
|
What relevance 'cavalier' O'Keefe's claims about stranded motorists has to how a Pub is reviewed is anyone's guess!
This Restaurant (as it is by no means a Pub in the traditional sense) is an overpriced Rip-Off!! Simples!!!
Nb: Note to Owner O'Keefe: This site is about Pub's that serve Beer - the clue is in the title. Perhaps you could create your own Review Site....something along the lines of "Overpriced Restaurants purporting to be Pubs.com"??
|
The pub owners won the national Pub of the Year 2009 and have turned round a "lost" chain pub to a real pub again. See the article on the Magpies in the Bucks Free Press in December about how they sheltered the car travellers snowed in on the road. They put them up over night. This is what the British pub is about and this is what they can do when well run by guys who care about their community. Well done Magpies and Cheers
