user reviews of the Rann Wartha, St Austell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Busy Wetherspoon's hidden away in the deserted town centre of St Austell. It was a struggle to find a table. The standard 'spoon's selection of Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar were on. As the previous review states, there are also 2 guests. On my visit, these were Great Newsome Prickly Back Otchan & Brains The Rev James. There were also 3 real ciders - Weston's Old Rosie, Thistly Cross Whisky Cask & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. There is a pay and display car park close by. Probably the best option in St Austell.

One of the well-lit 'Spoons pubs. Seemed to be reasonably clean inside and not too overcrowded for a Thursday lunchtime.
Only two guest beers on offer, Lancaster Black and Bays Top Sail.
Standard food fayre. I wish they would change their chips to something more rigid and crispier!

Found the place a very average Wetherspoons really.

Staff were quite poor and the place found a bit tatty, having said that though after a tour of St. Austells other town pubs we were quickly back in this one!

6/10

A typically large Wetherspoon pub just off the town centre.

Very busy at time of visit and would appear to be where everyone in St Austell goes for a drink and to eat, apart from a few in the White Hart.

As sometimes seems to be the case in small market towns, the Wetherspoon pub sucks everyone into its orbit to the detriment of other local pubs who are unable to compete on price, (see nearby Hop & Vine pub now closed and boarded up).

Wetherspoons provides a (mostly) good experience.....but at what cost to other more traditional pubs?
