Large pub just out the town centre.
three real ales on - two from Caledonian Brewery and I went for a decent flying scotsman.
Decent enough but not sure its worth the walk out of town.

Saw a live band in here last week. It's the first time I've ever been in this pub and I will be back. Great atmosphere and a good range of drinks at the bar. Its a large pub with plenty of staff so we didn't have to wait long at the bar. Looks like they have live bands on every couple of weeks- you can check this out on Lemonrock as the pub doesn't have a website.

Alongside The Retreat and The Horn one of Reading's finer venues. You do of course get the rugby crowd but hey can't have everything...
|
Really enjoyed this pub. Huge place, sky sports, live music, pool table. Couple of good ales on (although I wouldn't call it an out and out real ale pub), friendly helpful staff. Decent, simple pub grub. Was pretty quiet on the Saturday afternoon we were there, but we saw that as a good thing.

overpriced and with a lot of weirdos as punters. when footie is on you don't get the usual lads out but a bunch of fey rugby type students all gone lightweight larry on the blue nun. cobblers. utter.

Not one in the top half of Reading's better pubs. Service bad. Pity - could be a good pub.
|
Definitely one of Reading's better pubs now.

Great pub still a bit student orientated but hey thats there clientle The pub is big yet has nice areas to disappear into and chat with friends the only down side it needs a real good clean they need to get a grip of the cleaning regime its not just surface cleaning its a real deep clean thats needed apart from that great beer good atmosphere great landlord fun pub

Another pub where the price of a half pint is not the price of half of a pint !!!!
|
A very nice pint of Caledonian was supped here a few weeks back outside in the sun. Nice friendly service and welcome, 7/10

The Turks changed ownership in July 2008 and it's a much better place for it. The landlord is often mixing with the locals and the pub now serves a good range of quality food. Three ale pumps with ever changing beers is also a plus, as they're well cared for.
|
Surprised there's been no comments in over two years! Well, the place has had another change in ownership and there's now a partition door to break up the two bars, plus a few extra pot plants. Usually serves up 2-3 ales, the quality is very inconsistent (as is the service) so I wouldn't particularly recommend a visit unless you want a game of table football.

Big spacious studenty pub. Barmaid seemed to get randomly stroppy about me wanting 2 halves of the two (very mediocre) ales rather than a single pint. Odd, but then again I hear she has a reputation for being a bit mardy.
Quite enjoyed the atmosphere otherwise, will give it another try to see if the beer has improved in a few weeks.

Good pub, spacious and cheap.

I went here in august for the first time, visiting a mate in reading. great DJs on the saturday night, who else could play municipal waste and meshuggah and get half the pub thrashing? drinks a good price too, and the jagermeister and cokes? superb.
|
OK Pub_man, you clearly at not a lover of rock/metal music. Fair enough, no one is asking you to be. The Turks has changed a lot, but a completely disagree with your comments. I have found the staff to be very welcoming and friendly. The music on a Saturday night is loud but heavy metal played quietly does not work. The Turks is unique to Reading. There aren't any other alternative pubs about. There are no end of towney chav pubs in Reading so I suggest you go to one of them for a pint
|
The Turks was a great LOCAL good beer and a good time was had by all. But times do change the locals are not welcome any more the service is minimal and the music is to loud and VERY VERY VERY HEAVY. These days you have to fight to watch any sport. So if you have pink or green hair if you have safty pins then this is your home from home.O for the days of the local TURKS..

The Turks Live Music venue is back!!! Give us a chance it was run down but we're trying to get it back on the map. We've got some wicked gigs lined up every weekend, cash prize karaoke on Thursdays and if Pro evolution mad we have a cash prize knockout tornament on Mon nights. Big projector screen TV for sports(new one) So try us out!
|
Should not be thought of as anything more than a local. Old style front section with randomly placed sofas. Newer exention at rear with a good pool table, which is however far too busy in the evenings. If you going to watch a game, get there early as allways packed, and there are no big screens (apart from the worst rear projection telly known to man). Larger very variable, sometimes flat, and never in the right glass (Stella in a Guiness glass; classy). Avoid the food if you want to live.

Good character pub with ecellent value beer and atmosphere. The atmosphere and punters are not the same as 20 yrs ago, but then neither am I.

The main attraction here seems to be cheap food. This pub used to be SO much better years ago (before it was the Fez).

A good pub with a good atmosphere and a adequate selection of albums on the jukebox. Good beer at average pub prices.

There was little wrong with the Fez, an L shaped pool table and some decent beer. Some of the townies disliked the name but the pub is made up of the Punters, the staff & the beer who gives a B****** about the name.

Cheap food, very good beer and excellent staff (Jill and Louise), well worth a visit

The place to watch the big footy matches. Cheap food, and good booze promotions also.

I am an x pat surfing in, who up until the late 80s the Turks was my first stop on a pub crawl, having to duck my head as I was tall. upto what then was the Cherries opposite reading station..I always started with a Lowenbrue beer which always kicked in well....and end up at the Top Rank which is closed so I hear Ray......Sydney Australia

On the way back up after returning from Firkin student hell ("The Fez And Firkin")to its proper name earlier this year.
Still a few too many dimwitted non-academic student types (you know the sort, "media studies", "sociology", "leisure management" etc.)during term time, but otherwise pretty decent.

Nice mixed student/town pub.
