please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've been to this pub a few times and sat outside the front. it's the only place you can go to keep away from the little irish guy whose been mentioned below a few times. He is a complete and utter knob. if he's not there then you are in luck.

the place offers quite a good selection of drinks. I haven't had food in there so cant comment on that. the inside is pretty offensive on the eyes. a collection of fairy lights bright Hawaiian umbrellas and green and orange wallpaper.

Please excuse my previous comment I was reviewing the Ship next door.

The service in the Pier was second to none, we had an enjoyable couple of pints in its slighly eccentric but charming atmosphere. Would certainly go back.

Sign outside announced food served until 8pm "Great we thought." Only while queuing to order we heard a couple in front of us try to order to be told the kitchen was closed today. At least we found out before ordering. Pub looked nice enough but we left to find a meal elsewhere.

Me and my Wife stumbled across this pub on the bank holiday weekend by chance on a day out with our kids and the pub was magnificent the setting is beautiful and theres loads of charecter in the pub, we was greeted by the very witty barman and sat quickly by the waitress we had starters then I ordered steak which was cooked to perfection I recommend the pepper sauce! My wife had the lobster which she loved and the kids chicken nuggets and chips, the food was not rushed which was lovely we had a chance to let our starters go down and enjoy a drink. We left very very happy and stuffed and will be coming here more often, I recommend the heineken beautiful pint

I have to say I am amazed someone had a good meal and time at this pub, I've been to the Pier twice for food. The first time because the pub looked deceptively inviting from the outside, only to find the staff rude and the food appalling. The second time was more accidental, a friend booked it when I suggested eating in Upnor and myself and six girlfriends went in for dinner.

Firstly I can't believe there is a chef, the meat cuts were poor and the fish "aged", the steak I ordered was burnt (for a rare!) and the fish my friend had must of been found at the bottom of an old freezer! Whilst sometimes food can be a measure of taste, as a Chef I would of been sacked for serving the rubbish that the Pier try and pass off as food.

As for the staff - No point in discussing your issue or complaining, they are not interested one bit. All they want is your money for dreadful food and miserable service.

There are three other pubs in the lovely village of Upnor and I recommend all of the others to this rip off. I can only think the pub is being deliberately badly run, perhaps the staff have fallen out with the owners.

Mother's day at the Pier. Returned with my entire family (14 of us!) for yet another fantastic meal. Looked after this time my the manager. We had a bit of a wait for the food as they were very busy, but that is about my only complaint. Great food, great time. A big Thank you to all the Staff for looking after us so well. Also, this place does the most wonderful coffee, which pleased my father in law no end.

Just a lovely lunch here with my husband and three children. A very charming pub indeed, made so by our waitress who was so sweet. It's nice to see staff making an effort, especially these days! We'll be back here for mother's day. Lovely view of the river too x

Glad I didn't read this before we went, we would have missed out on a great meal. Yes the food takes time but if you want fast treat yourself to a bigmacwhoppermcdogburger. The staff were really nice, the food and beer were good as was the coffee at the end of the meal. Our experience of this pub would bring us here again, maybe in warmer weather

Great beer, pleasant atmosphere, charming staff, interesting speciality evenings. A place to chill out. Comments below appear to represent a disgruntled competitor. Not eaten in the Pier yet but what I've seen looks good and we will definately try in the near future. Will update the review when we do.
Comment below regarding The Ship. We understand the food is good in The Ship, problem we experienced was getting the stuff served to us, we waited and waited and waited some more whilst the waitress talked to locals...and she talked and talked and talked some more, we ended up walking out.

We came here trying to get a quick meal, and saw most of the tables reserved, so we asked if it would be ok to get a table. After asking 3 different people, including the cheff, they said aslong as we order in 2 mins. We were ok with this, got sat down and were told everything apart from lunch was available. My girlfriend has a small apetite and liked the sound of the fish cakes off of the starters menu, which were priced at 6.95 so not cheap, and asked for them with potatoe wedges. The waiter bluntly said ''NO, We don't do snacks. I thought you guys were here to dine, we do al la cart here not snacks''. We were shocked and my Girlfriend felt pressured to order something else that she didn't really want because of the time constraint. After waiting for 40 mins, the food was FAR from al la cart, the mince in the cottage pie was grisley, the veg was plain and tasteless.I must also add that if here was to charge extra for the wedges it would have come up to more than the main meal we had. I think the staff here are under the illusion that they are a fancy resturant. The truth is that if they were in a town that had more than 2 places to eat they wouldn't last 5 minutes. AVOID!!!

Went for as family meal for our nans 80th birthday. Food was appauling, meals were cold, orders messed up and my wifes pan fried cod was raw in the middle I ordered a kobe beef burger which was served super well done in a frozen burger bun! well worth 16. There was a 2 hour wait between staters and mains. To top it off when the waitress came round and took the money, the manager then came to the table and accused us of under paying by 90. Resolved by the fact that they had not checked the till where the waitress had put part of the order through, in all the staff rude, food rubbish and beer well over priced. Avoid at all costs!!

This is really a very unfriendly place. The female waitresses don't look as if they want to be there. As I was waiting to be served they were being rude about a lady customer outside who had asked them to check an order, it later transpired that it was the barmaid's error, however that did not prevent them still moaning about the customer in front of us, not very professional.

I don't how you can charge 5.95 for a sausage and onion baguette when you are using some of the nastiest sausages known to man to put in them. If they are trying to set themselves apart as having excellent food, then they should be using the best ingredients, clearly they are not. They are using fatty greasy rubbish and then stinging you for an exorbitant price. 16 for a burger, who are they kidding? Much more friendly, reasonably priced establishments in the area. Avoid at all costs!

I recently went to the pier hotel with my husband and two young children, we found the staff to be very friendly especially the irish barman very charming.

I had the the steak and stilton and caramelized onions the best steak ive had in years melted in your mouth! compliments to the chef. my husband and children was also very happy with their meals as well.
We will definately be back and recommend this pub/restaurant to family and friends.
jodie1233 - 12 Jun 2011 19:29
What does this place think it is, overpriced substandard food. Asked for a portion of chips to go with a sandwich and got charged 5.00 for them. Would not be so bad but they were cheap quality frozen variety. Not sure if the Rochester area is ready for 16.00 burgers yet, served by staff that think they are up for a part in Fawlty Towers.

I don't know what to say about this place that sums up the incredibly unfriendly atmosphere. I've never been to a place like it.

I work locally and for a few months myself and my work colleagues have been trying to go there to have a relaxed pint, a game of pool and a bite to eat. A fairly standard request from a pub?! It seems as though it is trying to position itself as a restaurant even though the food is terrible and massively overpriced. Rather than a nice welcome, when you arrive you are confronted by the most aggressively rude barman - imagine an Irish Al Murray from a serial killer movie.

Despite trying to put up with their "eccentrictites", we have finally given up the place as a lost cause - The Ship in Upnor is a far superior venue for both food and and a friendly drink.

I went to this pub with friends from our respectable work place and we were really looking forward to a good lunch and quality drink. Instantly the owner and staff gave us an uneasy feeling that we were maybe not welcome. I chose to dismiss the comments, maybe they were having an off day.

We later returned to this public house, giving it another fair crack of the whip. But yet again we were greeted with rude staff and hostility.

I would not reccomend eating here as this establishment is below average on food and cost is pretty high.

Please think twice before attending on maybe the off chance, let alone attempting to stay in potentially a Fawlty Towers type hotel.

Thank you for reading

Rubbish! The only recdeeming feature of this place is the beer. The little Irish guy behind the bar is just plain rude, as is one of the waitresses. Food is not served beyond the bar area, not even sandwiches, so heaven help if you want a snack and play a round of pool on the wonky table.
Wouldn't recommend this place at all. Avoid.
