Decent old school alehouse with good selection of well kept ales. Worth the slight trot out of town.

Last pub we visited in Chippenham and still the best! Friendly proper pub. Real log fire. Lots of interesting beer and cider.

Yep, agree with most of the above - dogs but no kids, excellent, locals and other visitors friendly, as was the lady behind the bar, and an excellent selection of beers, of which, apart from the Blonde option, we tried all. The best pub in Chippenham by far, our only niggle was that not only were there no 'handles' available to serve beer in, but this was compounded by the fact that our proper beer was served in those awful 'waisted' unstable lager glasses. But, credit where credit's due, the lady did say that they had no problem with customers bringing their own tankards etc, if they so wish. Well deserved CAMRA awards for this landlord and his comforting friendly hostelry. We look forward to visiting again.

Absolutely splendid pub, with a superb range of ales. Magnificently friendly from owners, staff, and regulars alike. Wonderful to find no muzak, no children, just conversation - which can be erudite. Used by many individuals and small groups, and a real gem for Wiltshire. We have been going here frequently since before it's current incarnation - and what a turn-round it has been.

My favourite pub in Chippenham, great beer choice and friendly staff. I had a couple of pints of Arty Farty, had some real pork scratchers too, Nice! Dart board, log fire and dog friendly. This should be a template for all pubs everywhere.

Never been there before, only looked at the pub in passing by car and thought it might be yet another Chippenham hostelry worth avoiding. However, this Saturday we intrepidly ventured through the doors at about 8pm. Not only were we made to feel like veteran regulars, but there was a roaring log fire, and the atmosphere was full of buzzing conversation (no music - none needed) and to top it all, they still had two home-made scotch eggs for scoffing (sadly, no more of their pork pies....). Egg was amazing. According to my husband, excellent ales : I'm not a partaker, however their wines were decent. Great service, great vibe, great pub. So heartened to find a REAL pub that is walkable. Can't wait until we go again and to try the pork pies! And to catch a seat by the fire. And to try out the trad pub games......

Can't add much to what has been said. A real blast from the past, in the very best sense. Worth going out of way to visit. Top pork pies!

Quite simply the best pub in Chippenham by a country mile. Real ale/ciders, very friendly staff, CAMRA discount, brilliant pork pies at the weekend (best Ive ever tasted), friendly locals. This is what pubs should be like. Love it.

A traditional English pub, friendly, with an excellent range of Real Ales. You can't get better praise than that IMHO, they had a small beer festival on when I went.

As per Inky48's comment - a gem of a pub and just getting better! 6 ever-changing ales, at least 4 real ciders on in the back bar (not my poison so an approx tally), plus genial hosts, friendly locals - not many pubs you can walk into on different nights of the week, find different people each time and walk out having made new acquaintances. Beer range is varied, always at least two dark ales on, which is commendable in this day and age, food is offered in the form of fresh filled rolls in a basket on the bar and a reasonable selection of crisps, nuts etc. Definitely the best pub in town for ales and ciders.

A veritable gem. Great pub, great ale. Go there !!

Dates from 1784 when it belonged to Kingsfords Brewery in Lacock. Later an Ushers house, a one time Enterprise Inn, and now Freehouse owned by Steve & run by son Tom. Still a basic public bar boozer, a less frequented Lounge, and great friendly atmosphere. This is without doubt still The Best Pub in Chippenham! 6 hand pulls in main bar offer 5 changing well kept beers. 3 hand pulls in lounge not used yet. Ciders from polypins. Regular Beer Festivals with 9 on! CAMRA Beer Score 4. CAMRA member discount 30p/pint! No parking or beer garden, the walls are its footprint. Thanks guys for saving this little gem of a pub! We enjoyed 2 good nights here and will be back. Next Beer Festival Aug Bank Hol weekend. Reviewed 10/06/10 by SADCATS on Tour! SCORE- 9.

Reopened last week. Emphasis now on real ale and cider. Generally 4/5 beers on including a dark beer and 2/3 ciders from the barrel plus a perry. All beers and ciders tried so far have been excellent (only slightly marred by the Cotswold Honey Bear which wouldn't drop bright). 30p discount if you show your CAMRA card. Thoroughly recommended.

Dates from 1784 when it belonged to Kingsfords Brewery in Lacock. Later an Ushers house, now an Enterprise Inn. This is a basic public bar boozer with a less frequented Lounge displaying many historic pictures of the pub. Amanda & Jason have been managers for the last 2 years and we thank them for making us so welcome. This is without doubt The Best Pub in Chippenham! 3 hand pulls and 3 very well kept beers. Beer range varies. Tasters were offered to our whole group! CAMRA Beer Score 4. No parking or beer garden, the walls are its footprint. Thanks guys! Reviewed 09/05/09 by SADCATS on Tour! SCORE- 9.
Sadly it has taken BITE this long to list this pub which I suggested in May 2009 and even sadder is that the pub closed on 1 Dec 2009
