Nothing against The Jolly Butcher, except I'm not a Lees fan - I used to live a few yards away. But I do object to the comment above about The Gardeners Arms, not far away. I score beers for CAMRA and very, very rarely have I had a bad pint in the Gardener's; in fact I often walk over 3 miles from Chorlton to get a decent mug of Robbies there. I had two excellent pints there yesterday. Obviously, his comment about smoke is now out of date, and the ventilation is fine.

I grew up in this area so could be classed as "council house scum". Since the average price of a council house in the area exceeds most people's earnings by a factor five, probably best to leave such a comment for others to evaluate. This pub is fine, and while I only go in on rare occasions, it's better than many others in the area, and does not kick off the way some others do. Pubs in this area survive by encouraging ordinary working class people. Several pubs have disappeared because they allowed drug dealing rif raff in, and ordinary drinkers deserted them (Royal Oak being a prime example). So don't knock this pub - you could do a lot worse. And I don't like JWL either, but it's better than Hydes. Elsewhere in the country people would be glad of the choice of real ales you still get in South Manchester. You could always try the Gardeners Arms on Wythenshawe Road and get the worst pint of Robinsons in England, and be choked by cigarette smoke in a completely unventilated pub (they don't switch the fans on because it wastes heat, I think).

To I love the cake..... I know what you mean it is a good pub for what it does but check out the dates the reviews were done...... The last one was two years ago. It really was as bad as that then but has improved. I gave it an 8 when I nominated it back in 2003 user name then was James.

i dont know how anyone can say this pub is depressing!! its ace & dont know how it can be "chav central" wen its only local people that go in & it is over 25's. there is great entertainment on thurs, fri, sat & sun & i reckon it is probably the best pub in the area. staff are great & the landlady is a top lady. the only downside to the pub is that it doesnt serve food, if it did it would make a killing!!! highly recommended. oh yeh & the comment about council estate scum...... r u havin joke!! all the houses on the estate are bought houses so someone needs to check there facts.

Divided into two parts - lounge one side (also where they have the entertainment on the small stage) and on the other a vault type place. Nice Landlady - bit of council estate scum in there - Chav city I'd expect at the weekends. Could do with dumping the JWL brand - not a favourite beer - bugger all else to choose from.

To give an honest description of this pub would be to say it's depressing. Last time I went in I got stuck with a guy who was obsessed with Doctor Who! Staff were excellent.

Its an experience to say the least. Nobody has lived until they go into such a grand establishment like the jolly Butcher. P.S they have got friendly staff, customers and a superb football team. What more can you ask of a public house.

JWL brew not kept as well as other 'nearby' JWL houses.

Not half bad. It's a John Willie Lees pub so not my favourite but it keeps a good pint of Guiness.
