Always entertaining and full of fun.

I used to go to the pub with my then-boyfriend and the club with my mate Guy. The landlady was an interesting character. The club was pretty cool, when I used to go the DJ sent round a list so everyone could put down a few requests. The seating on the sides of the room with the dance floor in the middle was a bit reminiscent of a school disco, but didn't make it any less charming to me. I know when it shut a lot of people felt they had no choice but to trek up to London for a decent night out. Well missed.

It certainly is missed - by the brighton alternative community in general and by me and others who've commented here specifically!
Okay, so it had its drawbacks but it was a true institution and a legend in its day. But don't bother going there now, it's been sanitised and turned into a characterless 'Bar'.

The old Hungry Years was an institution; great music, no frills - how can anyone say it is not missed??? My friends & I travelled halfway across the country to go there whenever we could (not often enough). I used to be there every week when I lived nearby. Best rock club I've ever known. "Stuffed full" of smackheads & "dog rough women" is unfair; sometimes there were a few, but less than most clubs. The great thing about the Years was the music & the atmosphere - that's why we all went there ('91-2000) - certainly wasn't for the beer. We were all GUTTED when it closed. I didn't know it had been reopened or that there was a travelling show - thanks for the info.

I'm not dog rough or a smackhead neither were my friends and i was friends with mosy of the regs down there in the good old days. it smashed our community in the gob when they closed it down. we all miss it. now all we have is the facist pit and nights for townie wannabe metallers

I used to frequent the Hungry Years back in the late 70`s when I was a student. It was brilliant - haze of aromatic smoke hanging in the air, LOUD music (Deep Purple`s "Burn" was a favourite of the time) and lomg hair and denim everywhere you looked.
Can`t believe it`s not there any more. What a shame!

Hungry Years isn't there any more. Been taken over a VERY long time ago. What a transformation though. From heavy metal club / bar to...
A gay bar (gay bar, gay bar) on the plus side of things, it's been decorated fantastically, on the down side of things, the beer is rubbish. The closest thing they have to ale is Guinness and to be honest, it's not kept very well either.
