Visited on same day as previous reviewer so no need to list beers available but can add that a blackboard is handily placed giving strengths which ranged from 3.9% to a 5.9% and prices from £2.90 up to £3.60 based on the strength. They also have the little jars out showing the colour of the beers and can confirm they must fill these daily as it was their first job as we entered bang on 11. Although web site does have this as a midday opener same as other Huddersfield pubs, google street view did show a sign outside saying 11 on a Saturday so always worth checking. Great pub and friendly manager.

I just had time to visit one more pub before leaving Huddersfield. So I joined a few mates in the Sportsman. The bar area is fairly small and after the football match, it was a few deep at the bar. But the wait was well worth it. Ales were Timothy Boltmaker, Mallinson's Motueka, Howling Hops Riding Ale, Ridgeside Cascadian & Maffin, Roaring Four American IPA & Tiny Rebel Chocolate Stay Puft. A real cider and perry were also from Tiny Rebel - Protaropia & Peariscope. There are a couple of rooms off the main bar and an outdoor yard at the rear, where we retreated to. Part is undercover. I really liked this pub and it's not far off the Rat & Ratchet and the Grove in my list of favourite pub in the town.

As Hard-Fi once sang, 'hard to beat'. A great location en route from station to football ground and in the town centre. An impeccable, ever rotating range of beers on tap and reputedly a great pub quiz. As pubs should be - a gem.

Interesting interior and a good range of ales and lagers to choose from. Well worth a visit, although on a busy pre-match Saturday lunchtime/afternoon, they did run out of session ales at times. Everything I tried was very good though. For someone from the north now living in the south, it's still a pleasure to get a proper ale that takes time to settle and then still has a thick head on it.

Serves a decent pint of real ale and does a great sandwich. Easy to get to. Good atmosphere.

Large corner pub which once belonged to local brewer Hammonds (then Bass) Interesting interior with curved bar and a couple of rooms off the main bar area Very busy on a Saturday evening with most people drinking beer We tried their own ales but to be honest I was not impressed so we stuck to the other local microbreweries (getting a bit squiffy by now though) PLenty of staff on duty so no waiting for a beer and a vibrant busy atmosphere! We found a couple of stools but actually I think this is probably a great standing up pub if you can find the space!! Sadly a young lady opposite us managed to throw her drink on the floor and seat but missed us - she was very apologetic and we all had to moved away while the staff cleaned up the broken glass etc No harm done and we finished our ales and headed back to the station Another good pub worthly of a second visit.

Final pub on my way back to train station, en route to God's county. Sampled a porter from a local micro brewery which was delicious. Quite lively as the evening drinkers came out in force.
Only stood at the bar so can't really describe the rest of the pub. Got chatting quite easily to the locals.
Nice place.

Extremely inviting pub, different little rooms and bar staff very accommodating indeed. Your humble narrator was somewhat pissed by the time he entered said establishment, i vaguely remember that most of the beers seemed to come from local microbreweries!!

Like Stamfordian, I really enjoyed my visit to Hudderfield, and yes, it is hard to pick a favourite pub from so many good examples, but I would put this in the top two (alongside the Grove).
A friendly and warm atmosphere, aided by good bar staff who stood behind a bar offering a good selection of real ale.
It's only a couple of minutes from the train station - straight out, go past the statue and turn left - you can't miss it.
It's another must visit pub if you find yourself in Huddersfield.

Yet another good experience as we sought the best pub in Huddersfield. We have not yet decided on a winner, so will have to return. Another very good range of ales, reasonably priced and in good condition, including plenty of local offerings. Friendly service too. It was hard to leave, but needs must.

Excellent pub with a brilliant selection of real ale. Can recommend anybody to come here as the welcome was very friendly and the pub is very clean and tidy. The only downside was the price of the craft beers section. Will call in again soon though.

Excellent pub, a short distance from Hudeersfield station. Fine selection of ales and nice warm feel to the place. Will be visiting again soon.

Despite the vault-like ceilings, this is indeed a lovely cosy pub with a decent selection of ales. Not that far from the station if you have a change of trains.

I really liked this pub. Cosy and welcoming. The food looked good and substantial. Tried their home brewed beers but to be honest I found them a bit grim. The Mallinsons was superb though and I would return without too much persuasion!

Hard to fault - cosy little pub with excellent localish beers, friendly staff and locals, and wonderful pub food (pork pies worth the trip alone).

Great selection of real ale and they are just starting to brew some of their own, which I haven't had the chance to try yet. Friendly staff. Beer well kept and the building has some great period features.

As below, plus they've upped the ante beer-wise recently. Now not restricted to Anglo-Dutch and Taylors/Black Shite, there are usually several to choose from plus regular Mallinson's which is always fail-safe. Not had a bad pint yet, usually faultless quality.

Visited Sportsman last saturday,good choice of beers most priced at �2.60,beer was well kept and staff were really friendly,which you don't always get as away football supporter.

I went in at the weekend for the first time since it re-opened. I had been in once before, many years ago as a teenager - a mistake I never repeated. I thought the new version was excellent - maybe not up to the standards of its older brother - but getting there. Nice selection of ales and friendly atmosphere.

Although I'm familiar with Huddersfield, I had never visited this place until Sunday. I have to say I quite liked it; Stocked as it is with an impressive range of local ales from the likes of Fernandes, Acorn, Golcar and Black Sheep. Acorn Green Bullet (�2.50) was very enjoyable. Reasonably priced sunday roasts were doing a brisk trade, and a blackboard behind the bar proudly displays the number of pints of real ale poured this year; Although without anything to compare it to I've not really got an idea if 77,000 (Sunday's figure) is that impressive; It probably is.
Huddersfield has a number of enjoyable establishments and I would rank this as up there with the best of them.

i frequent this pub on matchdays, great atmosphere, a well thought out selection of beers, friendly service, and great value, top quality food, when in huddersfield this is part of a long chain, of must visit pubs, on what is becoming the real ale capital of yorkshire.

Surprised there is only 1 review of this place. Sportsman is one third of the "Ale Trail" that also incorporates West Riding Refreshment Rooms in Dewsbury and Cellar Bar in Batley, all 3 in close proximity to their respective train stations. We graced this pub on the afternoon of the England-New Zealand so it was pretty busy but there was still seating available as plenty were happy to stand. I thought it was perhaps a little dull inside and there isn't a lot going on. Its just plain. Anyway, we plumed for the Riverhead Liquorice Stout which was in tremendous nick and for only �2.50 a pint, a delight (5%). We debated staying for another but made our way to the Kings Head. I will return next time I am in Huddersfield though.

Nicely renovated and reopen as an alehouse - approximately 8 handpumps (Taylors Landlord, 2 Golcar beers, an Empire one, and 4 guests) plus Continental lagers both on draught and in bottles. The Sky Sports has gone but it's better for the changes IMO.
