This was the best pub I visited yesterday in Caernarfon. Situated up a narrow street, it has a dark and cosy interior. It was also the busiest of my 4 pubs. Two drawbacks were the fairly slow service - I witnessed one guy who gave up waiting and went elsewhere and a more limited real ale range than I was expected. The 3 ales on were Bass, Bragdy Conwy Welsh Pride & Dark Star Espresso. There was one unused handpull. But I was left wondering if there were any different beers in a different room somewhere. Despite this, I was happy enough with the Espresso. An old pub that is worth a visit.

beer was okay but we didn't find it the most welcoming or hospitable of pubs. gave up on it after a pint.

Lovely friendly homely place with at least one or two local beers on. Really good food. Sadly the beer we had wasn't in good condition. Hopefully it was just a one off occasion as the barman was very enthusiastic about his Welsh beers.

Superb pub, with a welcoming barman who was very enthusiastic about the beer. Recommended the Purple Moose Brewery beer, which packed a lot of flavour despite a low %. Think the other ale on pump was Bass.
A great unspoilt interior with a lot of local history, and also a pleasant seating area out front in the pedestrianised lane. A real must if in the area.

Fabulous pub! Check out the ales from Purple Moose of Porthmadog, Snowdonia was my favourite, nice and hoppy but there wasn't much wrong with the Madog's either - well I had to try everything!
Food and service was very good, excellent choice of local produce well prepared. The kids loved it too. Huge helpings and fairly priced.
It was just a shame I wasn't there for the evening session too!

Best place in wales I been in, for food, drink and to stay......(The rooms are kitted out with large four poster beds). In the pub the beer is nicely kept....Well worth a visit if you a pub mog like me.

Splendid traditional olde-worlde pub/hotel situated in a pedestrianised side street just inside the town walls.
The exterior has quite an imposing look to it and, inside, we learn that it's a 16th century building dating back to 1522. Dark low beams and criss-cross leaded windows help contribute towards quite a cosy rather upmarket establishment. There's also some fine old chairs and settles.
There's one entrance for a lounge bar and restaurant and a separate entrance for a public bar, which is still quite well appointed and cosy.
We learn from an information board inside the pub that the un -PC pub name relates to"Black Jack", who was captured as a young man in Africa and transported to Wales in the mid 1700's. He worked as a gardener, married a Welsh girl and fathered 7 children. He is said to have been probably the first black man seen in Wales.
2 real ales were on during my recent early evening visit - Bass and Snowdonia Ale from the Purple Moose Brewery, this being an enjoyable pint, but at 2.80p for an ABV of 3.6%, probably reflecting the pub's emphasis on providing food for tourists / visitors. There's only 2 handpumps, so the beer range will always be limited.
My quick walk round the town centre did not reveal any other pubs that I was irresistibly drawn towards, so , despite the limited beer range, you might want to seek this one out when in Caernarfon if you're looking for a pint in fine traditional surroundings.

I liked this place a lot - it's an old building with uneven floors, thick walls, plenty of nooks and crannies and a proper fire. Had Mallard IPA for sale, which I'd not seen before and was rather nice. Also proudly displaying a good beer guide 1976 sticker!

This is an awesome pub, it has quite narrow corriders but has a lot of space that goes right around the bar. They have many unusual cask ales and local beers!
Great on a winters day - the open range wood fire is a joy. It claims to be the oldest pub in the town.
A++++
