Says 'closed' on this website but as John Wayne once put it, The hell I am. The revived Waldegrave (or Waldy) is a lively pub in a pleasant area of Teddington away from the centre. Sharps beers and Quins Ale were on. Food menu. Barstaff nice.

Popped in for the first time since it has reopened and was met by a very friendly barmaid who was very helpful and chatty. There were a couple of big TV's showing the rugby and three ales ready for tasting. They even had a Meredian beer on tap so not just the usual lagers that you would expect in a pub either. Food available aswell. They have even knocked the bar down in size to make more room. Shame the beer garden has gone though.

PUB NOW BACK OPEN
|
Apparently the facade will remain but the rest will be knocked down and rebuilt, starting over Xmas. But at least it seems it will reopen as a pub (as well as lots of flats).
|
Still closed and boarded up. No sign of anything happening.
|
Was glad to get in here for a pint on what turned out to be its last day. Sad to see another English pub go to the wall. This is happening far too often.
|
Well, time has passed, The Waldy as we all knew it has gone. I was one of the many assistant managers that the waldy has seen over the years! Im proud to have been a part of its history, and im definitely one of the many people who will cherish the memories they have of this amazing pub!

Developers have just submitted plans to build 22 flats on this site. A pub/restaurent'is to be retained on the ground floor but the garden and parking will be lost. They have already torn most of the trees down. Objections can be sent to Richmond Council under planning reference 07/0299/FUL.

Hi, Does anyone have any idea what is happening this pub??
|
Sorry Toffee Exile. The Waldy might have been good in the 90s but it's heydey was without a doubt the 70s - Gansters and Dustmen rubbing shoulders with Students and Filmstars...
You could sit there all night and be entertained by patrons with names like Harry the Fish, Wally the Caravan, Wobbly Jim, Hettie & Blanche, Fingers Farrell, Auntie Jane, Harry the Roof, Paddy Onassis, Divvy Trevor & Chicken Summers to name but a few - and run by Freddie Buckner.
This was a indeed a Pub without equal.

Sad day for me to hear that Waldy has closed. Obviously it went into decline compared to 90s "heyday" when I was lucky enough to work there.
Trust me, it used to be one of THE best pubs in Teddington.
The ratings, however, do not lie.
RIP Waldy

Used to be a great pub, good mix of customers and beers. Sign of the times I suppose, but a shame. Would have liked to have a final pint there on next trip to UK, where will the few regulars left go now!
|
Apparently it's been bought out by st marys and is being turned into another halls of residence? But thats just what i've heard!
|
Pub closed a couple of weeks ago and is all 'steel shuttered up' with no sign of activity. I've no idea what is planned for it but if it's another pub, surely it can't be as bad as before. As it's the only pub this side of the railway line for some distance it would be well worth developing along with it's large beer garden.
|
hah, i see alot of the comments are on the staff. im a st marys student, so i go there a fair bit, and i even know one of the assistant managers and when i go in he doesnt treat me too well... that may just because of him though. lol, altho Athens is the cutest dog ever. i still go to play pool.
|
The food really is bad I admit!
|
The cheapest pints in teddington! This place is all good if you want to get lashed for cheap and play pool. Its not a realy a homely place though. Its prety drab, characterless and uncomfortable. I also agree with the other reviewers that the bar staff arent all to friendly.
Its a pub thats trying to appeal to students. Im a student and I still think its pretty crap. I just like cheap beer.

Been going since early 2000 but purely to watch the football with a friend when NUFC were playing. Gave up about a year ago. Got fed of of being a 'regular' but never recognised. No matter how often we went to the bar the staff still treated us as strangers. As a bitter drinker was always impressed by the choice of guest beers but usually when getting home I felt nauseous no matter how much I'd drunk (usually 5 pints max). Lager drinking friend never had a problem. I've never felt this way in any other pub so started drinking only Newcastle Brown or Guinness and never had another problem... until was passing recently with my wife following a nice meal at the Post Box virtually next door. Went in, (after about a years absence) had 2 pints of bitter and it totally ruined the evening. Some things never change!

Been going to the Waldy for years, but these days it really has gone downhill - rubbish bar staff who are rude and dont seem to give a shit, plus the food is downright poor. Been treated shabbily several times over the last couple of years which as a regular and local for over a decade really offends me. Its only saving grace is that the beer is cheap (2 a pint) and there's a pool table. Such a shame cos it used to be a great local pub. Rarely go there these days... they need new management and not some oik of a landlord who only cares about making money out of the students with piss poor drinks promotions and to hell with anyone else.
|
Friends Reunited? What's that?? Thanks to posting about this pub I've regained contact with one of my ex-guvnors! Good to hear from him, it was, too!
|
Sad to see some of the comments being made about my old stamping ground. I worked there in the early/mid 90s and can honestly say it was one the best pubs I've had the pleasure to have worked in - nothing before or since has matched those halcyon days
|
I've been going in this pub off and on for the last 15 years. Could be a great pub. Has been an awful pub over the years. But it keeps drawing me back.....Has something...

Made a return visit. The only thing I can say in its favour is the staff were very good. Ambience & Real ale was rubbish

Last time I went in their they wouldnt accept a 20 note because it was slightly ripped so I had to pay by credit card! (Tescos didnt compain) Although it is cheap.

Im the Assistant Manager of "The Waldy", weve just undertaken a medium sized Springboard (Refurb)!! The waldy is the cheapest Pub in thew area without doubt, as well as having a wide range of guests through the door! The managemnent has completely changed in the past two months, we are now completely customer focused, were open four your suggestions, but try us b4 you judge us

I could tell you stories about this Pub that would make your hair curl. Unfortunately though they all stop when the last "Guvnor" (Fred) was replaced in the 1970s by a succession of faceless Pub Company Employess. Bring back the Landlord.
The Pub Ghost - 8 Aug 2004 16:54 |
Apparently they serve food... I wish they bloody did the last three times I tried to get some..."only a snack menu available" .... love to get a job as the pub cook - must be a right stroll.

Boring, sterile hole with absolutely no personality and rude bar staff.

Loads of students...nubile young ladies and so on. Oh...and the beer is not bad either. Other than that, below average pub.
richardaustin - 13 Oct 2003 15:34 |
The 'Waldy' is a favourite haunt of students from St.Mary's University across the road. A traditional pub full of little old men, drama students and rugby players. Yay!
