Update 2018. White Lion pub has secured planning consent again for change of use to convert the building into two three bed dwellings. Carpark application again refused but may be approved once the pub is converted. Watch this space.

2017 update - still listed as a pub! Planning permission to convert has lapsed. Planning application to build six houses in the car part has been refused. Anyone want to buy?

Update 2016 - this building was sold to a private local resident who has yet to start work on redevelopment. Council monitoring as it is now an eyesore and will soon become unsafe.

cannot believe this pub was allowed to die! Must be the prime location in Marsworth. Would be great if the owners or council could give a reason?

Update - planning permission granted to convert pub into a 3 bed and a 2 bed dwelling. wish they'd get on with it. the place is an eyesore. Presumably they will now get permission to build on the car park too. Nice homes for some people.

Update -The White Lion will never be a pub again. going to be houses when they get their planning permission sorted. Nice canalside location could be shared by many will now belong to so few...

This Brewery is advertising the lease for 25k a year! It looks derelict. When are they going to spend some money on it? The windows are shocking and they didn't even put any flowers in the boxes to make it look invitiing. An absolute eyesore. Someone please buy this beautiful building from the Brewery and bring it back to life for the sake of Marsworth. Wish I could afford it.

I agree with madaboutmarsworth it is an absolute disgrace to let this pub decline in the way the Brewery have allowed.
The place has so much potential its hard to believe what the Brewery are doing (unless they have plans to sell/develop the site).
In its good days it was a very respectable place to have a pint and indeed eat.
Great location and a very popular place.

In the last 10-12 years we have seen a steady decline in this once thriving country pub. The latest leaseholders (who, incidentally, also own the Anglers Retreat) have finally killed it off good and proper. This is a disgrace - the Brewery has neglected it for years and its rival, the Anglers, was allowed to close it down.

This pub is currently closed, Spring 2011. The lease has run out. Shame.

Tried lunch - no where near as good as sister pub Anglers
Scridian - 22 Jul 2010 15:14
Me and the missus went here for lunch for a change as we would normally go to the Anglers. I wish we hadn't. The beer was decent enoughand the barman friendly but I had the worst fish and chips of my life. The fish in batter must have been microwaved as the batter was flatter than a Witches' tit and unedible. I've never seen or tasted any batter as disgusting.
I would certainly never entertain eating here again.

I agree with bucking fastard-a neon open sign which would suit an american burger chain immediately gives a bad impression and after visiting i can only judge that it also gives a correct impression. I have drank in many GK pubs before but the ale was foul, cloudy and warm which when accompanied by service from a 40something woman who has no idea what shes doing it results in a bad experience. Much to my better judgement i agreed to eat at my wifes request-oh and how i wish i had followed my gut instinct!!food service was slow despite not being very busy and the food was bordering on the rancid. Im not a complaining person by nature and i wa about to do so but i was so angry at the whole experience i bit my lip this time to avoid a heted confrontation. I last came here a couple of years ago and found it to be a friendly although rather cold pub with a mediterranean menu which was both reasonably priced and fresh-the complete opposite to the fayre presented here now. I hear that it is currently owned by the owners of the pub down the road so we went there to sample what they have to offer in the hope of getting a decent pint.I have also reviewed this pub-The Anglers Retret

Oops..neon OPEN sign
Bucking_Fastard - 11 Nov 2009 16:21
The illuminated neon ON sign makes the heart sink, this is a modest pub with much to be modest about. The real ale is GK IPA and Abbott ,and Ruddles bitter all very undistinguished and the food offering is standard pub grub.Enter via the car park, there is a ground floor bar, often closed, and upstairs a restaurant area . The bar and a wrap around lounge is on the opposite side of the stairs. There are some interesting views over the canal if you go right round to the back of the lounge and in the right hands this pub could be reasonable. In the 80's this pub was known to the boating fraternity as Frankie and Johnnie's after two old queens who ran the pub and whose idea of pub food were giant frankfurters...but at least the White Lion had some atmosphere in those days.I would recommend going to The Anglers Retreat for good beer and The Red Lion for good food and good beer.Give the White Lion a miss.
