What an odd place, it feels more like being inside a stately home than a pub. But the beer is excellent and I do like a little quirkiness. I was the only one in the bar area, though loads seemed to be entering and exiting the restaurant. Then again it was 11am.

It's okay and the ale was decent enough but not somewhere you'd want to hang about unless in a larger group.

Hard one to judge. Very smart establishment, tastefully done up, good range of ales, charachter old building, but its more of a bar/restaurant, sort of place for couples etc, than a "proper", outright pub.

This is a bit of a strange place. The front half has all plush leather high-backed seating like a gentlemens club, whilst the rear is laid out with tables for people eating. We were admonished for sitting there and not ordering food.

They had 5 or 6 real ales available including some of their own Borough Brewery range. I tried the Dark Chocolate. This was OK but once again was too cold.

6/10 – reasonable but not my cup of tea

Called in The Borough yesterday (27th June) and enjoyed their three own-brewed ales. The place is a sort of cross between a pub and a gentleman's club, although the clientele seemed to be quite varied across both age and gender.
Good quality ale, I especially liked the Pale, a superb pale ale with nicely balanced hops and malt. Not too hoppy, a very nice change from the modern trend for making excessively hoppy beers, this one was spot-on.

Since I last visited, the Borough has acquired its own brewery and serves 3 own-branded beers, the Dark being a tasty 5% stout which, at £2.35 a pint with CAMRA discount, is a bargain. I was served by a very nice, friendly barmaid as well. The place is indeed a bit on the posh side but still one of my favourite Lancaster pubs.

This is my favorite pub in Lancaster, I come down from Carlisle for a pub crawl about once a month. The last reviewer must have landed on a bad day as I only ever have good friendly service here - and they dont know me personally. If she doesnt want to pay 3 a pint join Camra, you get 1 off a pint. A rare addition is handled dimple glasses, these are very rare in the North being a Southern home counties speciality.

Decidedly upmarket both in decor and customers, but it has to have the snootiest barmen (and they do seem to be all men) in Lancaster wearing silly waistcoats and bow ties and looking down their noses at the customers.
The beer is excellent quality but well over 3 a pint and to make it worse it's served as short measure and plonked down on the bar in front of you by said barstaff with a "just you dare to complain and see what happens" look of their faces.
Without the bar staff (and short measure) I'd give it 9 out of 10.

Nice upmarket place with a good selection of ales - very pleasant surroundings and prices to match (3.20 for a pint of 3.7 ABV ale in good condition) which seems to maintain a good class of customers.

This is a really top quality place right in the centre of Lancaster. There were 5 guest ales a superb beer garden and it also served what looked like top quality food !!

If you are ever in Lancaster this must be on your list to visit. Its not really a boozer as such with posh leather chairs and setee's etc, but the beer is well kept and it has a great atmosphere, especially at the back where the food is served.

Grand city centre pub conversion on the city's pleasant main square, the classical sandstone exterior of which (see above) gives an impression of what lies within.
As noted, it's stately home- like, with grand chandeliers, a staircase and old pictures on the walls. The one large area is partially separated into more intiamte-feeling parts, although the rear of the pub is given over to diners. Some of the walls are oak-panelled, and whilst the majority of the furnishings are traditional, there are also some comfy old leather seats to relax in.
The beer selection is strong, with local breweries such as Bowland, Thwaites, Lancaster and Hawskshead represented on my visit. Hawkshead Bitter was its usual excellent pint.
Busy on a Saturday night, with a mixed crowd making for a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely a must-visit if in Lancaster.

Excellent ale house by the town hall & Queen Victoria statue. Stately home-like interior with some big chandeliers which I would not like to stand under. About 6 ales on from different microbreweries. Top notch pub.

Lovely pub architecture, great real ale. Quite a foody pub and pretty large with lots of seating and 'comfy chairs'. We went on Sunday evening and it was pretty busy. What's interesting is the clientele, a pub that has customers right through the age ranges from students to senior citizens.

Found this pub yesterday recommended by the barman at the Boot & Shoe in nearby Scotforth which is itself well worth a visit. I have known Lancaster for years and never been here before, what have I been missing - the best pub in town. Great selection of fine ales very friendly knowledgeable staff and an interesting fellow Camra enthusiast, unusually a lady. This pub must be included on any Lancaster crawl.

While not your typical pub this is worth visiting for both the beer and food. Have spent a few leisurely lunchtimes here sat in one of the very comfortable chairs. Usually start with a pint of Bowland Hen Harrier, one of their regular beers, and stick with it as it's served in great condition. Recently took the girlfriend for lunch and she was rather taken with the ambience and the quality of the food. Definitely one of the better pubs in Lancaster.

Still best pint in Lancaster. Tried the food this time & was excellant. If 2 main course order you get a bottle of house wine! Food wasn't the cheapest - starter and main was 20 a head ish (though wine was included)
Beers again on form - though sadly 3 went off while being pulled for us and weren't replaced by the time we left 2 hours later.
The Allendale brews we tried were very good indeed.

A very good few beers were enjoyed in here. Choice of around 6 beers, a mix selection of local and national micro ales. Very large place, high ceilings. Eating area was very busy, the menu looked very nice (if pricey indeed) and will be tried in the future. Sat in the bay window and watched the world go by - vast selection of customer newspapers provided.
If a CAMRA member show your membership card for 30p off a pint - which is valuable as Lancaster isn't the cheapest place to drink.
This place is a contender for best pint in Lancaster.
