A superb country pub with excellent food let down a little by the poor choice and quality of the ales.

A very inviting pub.

Seriously excellent. Old building that has retained all it's traditional charm. Ale was excellent - Windsor & Eton brewery Knight of the Garter. Staff were friendly and knowledgeablke. Food was really excellent. Toilets newly refurbished aswell. You really get the feeling the owners love this place and care for it

I just love this place, utterly brilliant food and good service. The right place to be for a plate of duck confit and mash. Will keep coming back to expand my waistline. Well done for getting it so right!

Last visited in December'07 and as before the food was excellent. Last time ate in the bar area, this time the restaurant. The restaurant area has been redone since my last visit and was light and airy with plenty of room between tables. The welcome and service were friendly and attentive. Will notleave it so long next time

After reading some of the earlier posts it was with some trepidation that we booked for my birthday celebration meal in July. We thought that maybe the place had changed hands. We have been going to the Chequers (Neals Restaurant) for several years - for special occasions. We arrived to the warm, friendly greeting that we were used to, and were shown to our table in the restaurant (which had been redecorated since our last visit). The service was absolutely fine (this was a Friday evening). Our order was taken promptly and the courses arrived at a pace that we were happy with. We had to wait a bit for the bill, but that just meant that we didn't feel pressured to vacate the table. The food, as always, was top notch. All 3 courses were really tasty and presented beautifully. My husband's sticky toffee pudding was the best he has tasted. He still mentions it a couple of months on! He is also of the opinion that they have the best-kept Harveys beer that he has found to date. So to say that we were relieved is an under-statement. We will happily continue to visit Chequers for special meals out.
Maybe if you are just looking for a place to drop into for casual pub grub then this might not be the best place for you. I'd say the food is more in line with 'gastro-pub', and I expect to pay slightly more for it as a result. (Although I still think it is very reasonable). Also, we always visit in the evening (apart from an occasional Sunday lunch) and we always book a table in advance. With the popularity of the food here that may be why some visitors perceive issues when they just arrive 'on-spec'. Highly recommended!

We went for a drive round the country today and just happened to stumble upon this pub just when we got hungry. They were fairly busy when we arrived at the bar but it was no problem for us to get a table for four. All staff were very friendly but the service seemed confused and disorganized. We actually had to go up and ask for cutlery and the bread we ordered before our meal never came. Since we are very nosey (!) we listened in to the other tables, who all were booked in advance. At one point the waitress went up to a table who had been there for a while and ordered and got drinks already (not what they ordered bu the way), to take their food order, not realising that they didn't even have menus yet! After we finished our meal the waitress cleared two of our plates promptly and then left two of us sitting there with our plates for absolute ages!
The food on the other hand did not match the service at all! It was all delicious! Three of us had roast beef and I must say it was the best beef I've had in ages. It came with five different veg, all lovely, and beutiful gravy. One of my friend had fish and chips and she loved it too. I probably would come back, but only for the food.

average to say the least....

have to say the food is pretty ordinary and not cheap.

Same Rob Pine who does their Web site......how stupid does he think we are!!!!

In the summer of 2007 Tim and Katy Neal were able to purchase the freehold of the pub. This came as a great relief to their locals. This ensures that Tim's great food will continue at The Chequers for the forseable future. Enjoy!

couldnt agree more with the last two comments...

Sadly unable to cater for people with special dietary needs. Previously visited with a vegan and was told they could only cook to the menu - we understood they employed chefs! Made the mistake of visiting again a year later. Same ownership. Same service! Requested a salad sandwich & a mountain of lettuce appeared stuffed in some bread - do they not have tomatoes, cucumber, onions, carrots, avacado etc?

I'm so glad I found this place. Friendly, welcoming, and the best food I've had for years. Top quality ingredients expertly prepared and extremely tasty. Great value for money too. I look forward to my next visit, as the Chequers really has something special to offer.

The Chequers ticks all the boxes. Flagstone floor, inglenook fireplace, headbangingly low door beams, well kept ales(Harvey's, Pride, Youngs bitter, and Black Sheep)and the most terrific food full of flavour cooked to order from fresh ingredients. The menu changes monthly according to what is in season. Can be tricky to find but well worth the effort. Go early & go hungry.

Having just registered on this site I checked out a few pubs i knew.Chequers in Rowhook serves quite simply the best pub food i have ever tasted. The service is great and for a real treat you should book a table in the restaurant (book early).

Very good food and reasonably competitively priced given the area. Good choice of ales - Harveys a particular favourite. Staff very pleasant and friendly which helps to overcome being outnumbered by the 'regulars' hogging the place.
