Squatters evicted from the Black Horse, now in the Hand and Raquet according to their web comments.
I read in the Telegraph today in an article about squatters, that this pub has now been occupied by these scum bags. Perhaps, having read previous comments, that some changes of the management needed to be made, but squatters is going to far. They need to be evisted and sent packing back to Holland, or wherever sqatters come from these days

2nd of October. This is or was one of our stopping off points when walking to the station. Today it is closed with no mention of an opening date. Sign directs you to the Marquis further down the road.
This pub has closed (observation 25 Sep 10). Notices outside direct would-be customers to The Marquis of Granby, nearby.

What can I say - what a strange mish mash of a pub. We walked in there was an almighty stink - not sure of what - but it was so offensive that I had cover my face with my scarf.. I then really im not joking get some perfume from a lady friend who was with us to put under my nose. We stayed as the others in group didnt want to go looking anymore for pubs.
Pub was full of tourists - as expected. We got served fairly well and I had a pint of Dangleberry. Service was speedy which was good.
The pub continued to *hum * -- and we found a table and noticed that all tables with candles on them were running scented candles obviously a known problem in here.
Im glad we stayed just for the beer the Dangleberry was delicious - and very well kept - i didnt think any of the bar staff would know what that means but whoever looked after the ales there does a good job...
Pub is small and dinghy otherwise..
I would go back - with a gas mask - just for the guest beers or if they had Dangleberry on tap again!

Had a really bad experience lastnight despite having frequented here on occassion with fond memories. Came with a large group of friends for our first drink of the evening, as I was on medication I declined to drink when the one of the staff asked me for my order. She then told me that it was not a "youth club" and that I should leave if I wasn't going to drink anything. I was absolutely shocked as I was the only one in my group not to order a drink and I don't think I should be discriminated against for not being able to drink at that moment. 30mins later the landlord told the group of us to leave because he didn't "like" people like "us". I am still puzzled as to why we were sent out. He even went to all neighbouring pubs to tell them not to let us in. So much for starting off our night! We all went home feeling a bit pissed off that we had such a bad reception. I won't be going if they are going to discriminate against people who can't drink and people who are just being friendly.

Visited here yesterday (Early Lunchtime) as part of the Nicholson "Dick Whittington" Ale Trail. Fairly Quiet but served a good pint of London Pride. Bar Staff were friendly, Typical Nicolson Fare. Worth a visit if in the Tottenham Court Road Area.Timithy Taylor Landlord also available
Yet another Landlord and things are looking up again after the downhill spiral over the past year. There is now a full line of pumps with a fair selection of ales to be had. The high tables and chairs are gone and have been replaced with normal height tables that you can actually eat at. We ate here and the food menu has changed from Nicholsons sausages to a Fish menu, Shame as I fancied sausages in one of those giant Yorkshire puds. Settled for the Steak and Ale pie, It was OK but nothing to write home about. As for the ales they were served to my likeing with no real complaints from me.
Single roomed but deep pub with a traditional interior just north of Oxford St - service ok and pleasant enough for a lunchtime drink. The raised upholstered benches at the back are very comfortable but far enough away from the front window that the time of day becomes immaterial. It's as good a place as any to escape the squalid eastern end of Oxford St but there are better places further north along Rathbone Pl / St
Another decent Nicholson's pub although for my money not quite as good as the nearby Tottenham. Again, quiet when I visited, a decent range of ales (I too spotted the Morrissey Fox beer, although didn't sample it), and a clean and pleasant feel.
Very friendly bar staff who were doing a good job to promote Cask Ale Week. Sampled Morrissey Fox Blonde but suspect that this beer should no longer be marketed under the MF micro brewery brand. The Seasonal Ales booklet offered in Nicholson pubs states; its this top secret recipe thats been sent to their brewing partners Brewing Partners? Read somewhere that Cropton Brewery in N Yorks is doing the legwork for MF but given the bottled volume they also have to turn out for Tesco I wonder. Will certainly be back to try some more seasonals though.`

Saturday evening visit looking for food and refreshment, Not too busy but very noisy, Upstairs closed again so had to eat downstairs, Guest beer was IPA so gave that a wide berth as its everywhere now. I had a pint of Pride which was OK and my partner had a glass of Rose, A quick look at the menu shows that it has changed and the giant Yorkie puds and chioce of sausages have gone, Shame as this was why we visited. I decided to have the Steak and Landlord pie wich I found very filling andgood value although it came with Leeks Urgggggg. My partner had the Mushroom with melted mouldy cheese salad thing that also looked very nice. Definately a better option trhan some of the other chain pubs nearby although the ale choice could be better.
Seems to have changed a lot recently. The tall downstairs tables have now gone and the bar staff changed but the food menu and the ale is just the same. Upstairs room was open but the upstairs bar was closed.
From previous reviews (including my mate trainman) clearly can be a bit hit and miss as to how many beers are on offer. However went in last night and all 3 pumps on offering Landlord (very good nick), Pride (did not have) and a rather nice "Blonde" from Morrisey Fox. Good early evening atmosphere and a friendly barmaid add up to a return for me in the near future.
I liked it in here and found the barman/landlord to be very friendly.
Santas Tipple, Landlord and Wadworth Henrys were all available along with Staropramen, Amstel and some standard lagers. The decent background music and good atmosphere we see me returning here when next in the area.
Saturday evening, what has happened, Only one pump on and its pride. Upstairs resturant seemd closed as well. Normally our watering and Feeding hole before we get on the tube to go home but not this time.
A Nicholsons pub. Nothing special, although I rather liked the gilded ceiling. Two pumps had clips turned round only Pride on, but pretty good value at 2.60 a pint. Rather too many high stools and high tables for my liking. Another OK pub, that is good enough for a pint if you happen to be passing, but a better real ale selection would be a big plus.
Looked good on approach with original old wood windows, BUT, 4 pumps, just one in action - Pride. Lazy, lazy, lazy! We didn't stop.
Great value - especially when you consider the location. Went in for one, stayed for three!
Saturday ale and evening meal, Went upstairs to eat where it is quiet. Good choice of beers but cannot recommend the Sly Fox as it tastes of Ginger and I prefer my ales to taste of ale, Other beers good. Food superb, the daily special sausages were served in the biggest yorkshire puds I have seen.
Nicholson's pub so some decent real ale including London Pride, Landlord and the monthly guest Hyde's Jekyll's Gold which was ok but nothing special. They had a board up where you could vote for the monthly guest.
Long narrow downstairs bar area, looked like there was an upstairs room although it is one of those places where it is described as a function/dining room so you are not sure if it is always open.
Nicely presented pub, clean friendly and a decent selection of beers.
Popped in for an afternoon pint the saturday after christmas. Usual good standard of ale. Had the Adnams Yuletide which was very nice. Other half had a glass of rose that was not so good. Still a worthwill stop just off Oxford street.
Nice pub, Friendly bar staff, good ale choice. Not sure about the high tables in the bar area. Food good and not overpriced. Dont forget to vote on the next visiting ale while you are there.
Ok boozer just off Oxford Street. Beer quality good, and a relaxed atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon. One of the better drinking places in the area.
good little boozer always popular in the summer
Went here last night and didn't see the pool tables. Must have been binned during the refurb. Upstairs quite empty, but a nice chilled atmosphere and the lager was fine. Guess they must have swabbed the pipes during the refurb too.
CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT - looks like a fairly drastic refit is taking place from what I could see peering through the door last Saturday afternoon
Tried to get a drink there saturday morning and it was shut, outrageous !!! We had to take refuge in the Jack Horner
Loads of space upstairs (with the pool tables). However, there is meant to be a limit of 30 people, but not that anyone seems to worry :-)
Beer quality poor. Draught beer (2 different ones) slightly tainted, going off. Even the keg lager the same, as if someone 'forgot' to properly clean the beerlines out. Not good. Wine was fine thou!
Nice. Plenty of room without feeling too big. Jukebox, games, pool or a relatively quiet corner to chat, this place has a little of everything.
This is an average London pub, but gets a better score because the beer is reasonably cheap, they have pool tables upstairs and best of all they show most big sporting events.

Good Pub. But unfortunately, my best mate's girlfriend had her handbag nicked from there on Friday. Don't stand next to the Quiz and fruit machine, downstairs opposite the Bar. The 2 CCT cameras are directly above pointing in opposite directions.

used to be ace. now not quite so good (the old jukebox selection was smart). but still ok. lively.
Used to drink back here in 1999 all the time, when a few of us went round after finishing work at the berners hotel. Used to be a great pub

Seemed to be under new management when we visited back in December. No more happy hour every day. Instead there different drinks offers, (similar to those in the Falcon by Clapham Junction, if that means anything to anyone) - cheap Carling, 2 for 1 on selected bottles, that kind of thing. Not sure how much else has changed. Hopefully they've got rid of that karaoke though.
good pub which sells some drinks at lower prices depending on where the arrow points to on the wheel! A place to go to before a club. Often too crowded so standing outside happens alot. Next door to The Office bar.

Great atmosphere and the bar staff are really helpful and friendly and the male barmen are gorgeous!!!

Excellent pub for watching football as they have all digital channels and on nights when there are 2 games on simultaeneously - they show both! One upstairs the other downstairs. With monitors every where its a great pub for the footy!

Since this visit, there are now regular djs on Fridays, (I'm one of them, heh, heh) - improved Friday drinks promotions, and a new Sunday chillout club with board games and ... yes ... djs again. So what are you waiting for?
Chris - 23 Jan 2003 16:23 |
I still find it hard to believe this pub exists. Steps away from Oxford St and v close to Soho, yet it has pool tables (yes that was in the plural!) and a happy hour in the evening, every evening. And what's this? Special drinks deals on *Friday* nights? Unbelievable. Just don't tell anybody, OK?
Leona - 22 Jan 2003 14:22 |
Ooooh the lights are out again, just like in the 2001 photo above! I must say, I am rather looking forward to the beerintheevening 2002 Chrimbo pub crawl, largely coz it ends up in this splendid place.
I wasn't impressed. A bog standard selection of beers. Got a few pool tables but that's about all it's got going for it.

Fondly known as The Bladdered Stallion by me and my mates, it is a great location for Friday night carnage. Good atmosphere, good prices, good music - stumble out the door, cashpoint next door, grab a mate and head round the corner to one of the deliciously trashy Soho nightclubs.

Loz - it was the 21st December, not the 31st. But then you were wasted...

A glorious, nay magical public house. My fondest memory of this pub is playing bauble tennis with a random mentalist girl on New Year's Eve using our foreheads as rackets. Were you that opponent? Was your head in agony twice over the morning after? Fancy a rematch in 2002? This pub is very cheap in happy hour, suffers from very few tourists, and is frankly a brilliant boozer.
If the plumbing in the gents loo isn't musical, you're in the wrong pub. Top place.
Ed - 1 Aug 2002 09:26 |
This place has everything. Water-fights, V cheap drink (1 on fridays!!!!) and good-looking bar maids! This was the best introduction to England that I could have (Much better than London castle) Thanks Mel
Dan - 31 May 2002 16:34 |
The best 'real' pub in Central London. Justin (The Landlord) & his staff always have warm welcome waiting. Real beer, real people, real football. What more do you want? The icing on the cake, cheep beer. If only there were more pubs like this instead of all the 'so-called' tendy bars around.
Richard - 24 May 2002 11:42 |
Cheap cheap beer - pool tables galore - possiblly one of my favourites bars in London
Jonny Shock - 23 May 2002 15:35 |
Genius! :-)
Happy House how do I love thee? Let me count the ways! 8:30-9:30 Friday nights, everything between 1 and 1.70. If drinking was a religion this place would be Mecca and Vatican City rolled into one.
Michael - 12 Apr 2002 12:49 |
this is a great pub. weird the way it's super crowded on a friday yet we always seem to manage to get a seat. staropramen is, of course, to be avoided on school nights.
