Looked a nice Bar overlooking the water. Seemed to be more of a Lager/Wine establishment. But did have three Handpumps on the Bar. Sadly NONE had any beer available. This is on a Wednesday Lunchtime in the height of the season !!!!! Come On who is doing the ordering!!! The Barman asked what he could get us. we said real ale please. He replied he had none available so we immediately left and went elsewhere. If I ever go back to Lymington would give it another try but my visit seemed to back up stories I had heard from locals.

used this pub again as was the best saturday night pub in Lymington back in june 2011. however tried it again last saturday while on holiday and to my amazement the place was practically empty, not a sole at the bar, when i got to the bar three bar tenders rushed to serve me. this does not appear to be the place to drink on saturday nights any more. should survive regardless because it is a restaurant and hotel.

Visited here yesterday as expected v busy and all in all a decent effort. Service was patchy beer - Youngs was top-notch food was very good Only issue was the lack of staff clearing tables. Def. recommend

Called in here for dinner with wife and daughter. Food seemed a tad overpriced but was otherwise excellent. The pub is right on the quay and so seems to be very popular with yachty types - hence the prices perhaps. One group of women near us seemed to be particularly keen to look down their noses at all around them whilst quaffing their Champagne. To each his (or her) own, I guess ! Beer was also fine, service a little hit and miss. Some staff were very keen to please and the manager (I think) was very pleasant. Others boardered on the surly but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as it was very busy when we arrived and it quietened down considerably, later in the evening. A decent enough place though and I'd be happy to revisit.

Nice location. with nice view. Decent service.

Had an overnight stay here once with the wife and daughter before the refit, and our accommodation was very comfortable. A nice place, fond memory.

Call in the other day, Sunny weather, busy in the bar. staff seemed tired and peeved. Had to wait far too long for our pints of "Pride". When we got it, I thought it tasted ok. My wife thought hers tasted a bit sour. I smoke, she doesn't. My money is on her taste being spot on, mine being tainted by the baccy. It could have been her glass being tainted though?
Going outside to the decking area, we were disgusted by the mess on the floor and the many tables that had not been cleared or cleaned. we were there for around half an hour, and saw no effort to rectify the problem. Yes some families and kids make mess, but having taken their money, the pub has a duty to tidy up quickly for the next customer/s.
Regards No smoking, I agree. You cant have smoking when there are N/S adults and of course children next or near by to a smoker. Ssssimple! We will not be visiting again, there are so many alternatives. Ive given a 3 as all they had to do was pull 2 pints, and take my money. There was nothing in added vaue to our experiance.

Tried this pub while on holiday in Lymington, friday and saturday evenings the place was buzzing, great atmosphere, bar staff on the ball. Food is way overpriced so didn`t eat there. Superb position down by the quay, tried other pubs in Lymington, but Ship is best by a country mile.

A very beautiful, well-fitted pub, which serves minuscule portions of over-priced, cold and tasteless food at inflated prices. The staff couldn't care less, and I suspect they are treated with as little care as the customers. My advice: take your own sandwiches.

Lovely location, liked the modernised decor and nautical theme.
However, service was slow and female waitressed seemed very uninterested in our requirements and spent more time fraternising with chefs in the kitchen as is all visible.
Had been told by friend food had got better, which is true, however portions were very small and my fish was cold. My partner had to send his back as over cooked. Was replaced but meant I had finished long before him.
We stayed for drinks after, was quite a busy night, increased by at the end of the kitchens service, all the staff begain to prob up the bar, was quite shocked by langauge we began to hear and the amount staff were allowed to drink on premises, especially with customers still around!
ALthough did like the non smoking rule, and new beautiful pub, shame food not quite up to standard and uninterested staff when they work in such a lovely location!

Made a return visit this weekend and found it better than last time. Definitely leaning more towards being a restaurant but you can still prop up the bar if so inclined. Could have done with a few more chips to go with the excellent battered fish and the Old Hooky was a tad too cold but otherwise first rate.

Love this pub. Have eaten here twice now, whilst visiting Lymington, and the food has been excellent both times. Service is always with a smile, and great vibe in the evenings.

If Salcombe is for the braying, then this is for their brasher cousins. Good marina-cum-working harbour location.
Heavily modernised, without a whiff of the traditional. Not to my taste, but it is clean, smart and comfortable. The service is fairly prompt and pleasant. Didn't try the beers as driving.
The outside deck space is highly contemporary with tables, chairs and sofas - and really quite impressive. However, as others have noted, it must be the only pub the UK that does not permit smoking outside. Extraordinary that one has to effectively leave the premises completely for a gasper.
Plus points: service, outside space, location. Minus: no smoking anywhere, anodyne modern interior.

I was pleased to see The Ship has been modified inside. The nautical 'props' and 'theme park' type theatrics have gone. An extra ale is now available, which is a bonus. Sofas in there, carpets, more comfotable places to sit. Better than it was. Good effort. My rating has gone up.

Possibly the only pub I have ever visited that has a no smoking rule OUTSIDE and no place you can go to have a smoke anywhere.
Talk about alienating there customers. Would never ever visit again.

If people actually tried tasting and drinking the very well kept ale (at the cheapest price in town despite the fortune spent on the place) instead of all the fizzy rubbish of the advertising clowns and latest fashion then the handpumps might become more prominent than the chemical pipe contraptions. If in town this is the first place I would choose to eat (after Prezzo which is always full). The food is imaginative, well presented, tasty and exceptional value for money. There is adequate room to find a table away from all the hooray henrys and I find the whole place a pleasure to patronise. Keep pushing those ales - hope London Pride promotion night on 28 May is a success although beyond me why London Pride needs to be promoted - presume no small breweries allowed entry into yet another brewery tie.
|
I like the Howards Way reference of a previous reviewer - I thought of the Onedin Line when I saw the locality!! Yes it is very yachty and touristy but in January most of the customers seem to be locals. Managed to find London Pride hiding amongst the ice cold lager taps and it wasn't bad. Neither was the food or indeed the service. I agree that it is more restaurant than pub but that is the way of the world especially when M and B get their hands on a place.

The pub actually looks great, but best drink straight from the bottle (this applies to the Beer and wine). If you order a pint of Peroni or Staropramen you can taste and smell a metallic tang. Try it !
This would be caused by the staff/duty manager washing all bar equipment in the glass washer and failing to clean out the machine after the service.
**Note for manager - You can order 'liquid diamond cleaner' from an extended order on your BRS system when placing your beer order to Coors. This will cost no additional money on the order and will not affect your P&L. At the end of the service use this product to clean out the machine, then rinse the machine at least 3 times.
Each week take the whole of the insides of the glass machine apart and soak the parts all dismantled in a bucket of water and beer line cleaning fuild, This will kill the mould build up which is occurring. The result will be more drinks purchased=more buisness=more money=jiucy managers bonus.
**2nd Note. You need more staff during the summer, and staff that are very switched on. Get some Polskies.
**3rd Note. Pay the staff more. If the work 4 hours pay them for 6, so you play the budget game with Mitchell & Butlers 'Castle' channel.

To the membber of staff at The Ship. Who cares how much money was spent on a refit. I don't. Do you? This pub has always put the tourists and sailors ahead of the locals. It did in the past and it did the other night I went in. The range of drinks sums it up. Too many fancy bits of decoration here and there. Looks more like a set from an episode of Howards Way than a proper pub. Sorry, restaurant which is of course what it has become. Pub secondary. I can see Mitchells & Butler the new owners waving their fingers at the locals now saying "stuff you lot. This ones for the sailors". All in all a pub I try to avoid these days. A shame no matter how much money has been spent on it. Remember Ship member of staff, you can't polish a turd.

Please avoid visiting the Ship Inn, went for a drink in December 2007. Staff served me a bad pint of London Pride and after returning to the bar to get it replaced I was very rudely spoken to by two male bar staff who said my cloudy pint was due to condensation on the glass! Never again! I have since heard from friends the food and service is poor too!! Avoid!!

<<I am a member of staff here>>
This pub is now owned by Mitchells and Butlers who took over in December. They spent a million pounds on a complete refit, including the garden.
Inside it is completely different - no dogs/footballs shirts/caps etc. It is now clean, with well designed facilities such as showers and improved access. There is a large glass entrance, and the garden has been made level with the rest of the pub. Large french doors run alongside of the pub, providing light and fresh air.
The menu is a mix of traditional english with plenty of fresh fish and meat from the New Forest. A number of european beers are available on draught - Amstell, Stella, Peroni etc. London Pride Guinness and Speckled Hen for Bitter drinkers.
All in all a great NEW pub, what the town and location needed.

Pooped in - in need of refreshment - popped out couldn't get served full of bloody tourists and glasses of coke. - BAH
|
OK tried again - It's almost summer. Full of bloody tourists sipping half pints of lager top with screaming brats spilling coke over everyone - Oh what a shame that such a location has to play host to such a boring boozer
|
Definitely some sentimental value here. Never approach the place on a sunny lunchtime - tourists everywhere! Nice in the evenings if fairly quiet though.
|
Never one to give up - I ventured in - then left. Might try again during the summer
|
This pub was once my regular evening bash. No more. It is plastic - furniture, food and beer. Awful place. Full of tourists drinking larger shandy with shorts, sandals and white socks. They deserve eachother.

This pub has great sentimental value for me from many years ago. A lovely location on the harbour, it had a great friendly atmosphere, many happy memories.
I returned this year and it has become a characterless shadow of it's former self. Its still nice enough, but somehow it's managed to lose almost all of it's individuality. A real pity.
|
There is a nice view, but the inside bar service and beers is an insult to the pub trade. They have a captured market with the tourists, and so they do not even have to try. This being the case you must keep away.
