John Masefield, New Ferryback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Wetherspoons closed this pub in 2023 but it later re-opened under new ownership as 'The Cyclist'. A sports type bar with plenty of tv's and drinks adverts plastered over the windows. I assume the name 'The Cyclist' is because years ago this was a bicycle shop.

We arrived here after leaving behind a wake at the Knockaloe Bar in Bromborough, for which we were inappropriately dressed. The John Masefield is a typical Wetherspoons in a fairly inauspicious area. Beers on were George Wright Cluster 41, Blindmans Icarus, Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best. Ciders were Westons Cider Twist Raspberry & Marcle Hill, whilst they also had Gwynt y Ddraig Two Trees Perry. Service was friendly enough. For a slightly more peaceful experience, I recommend trying the Refreshment Rooms in nearby Rock Ferry. On the day, it turned out to be even better than Gallaghers where the beer range was extremely limited.

Much improved & in the Good Beer Guide for 2011. Small range of well kept real ale - at least one from local microbreweries. Food generally good, nice little garden and clean bogs. What's not to like.

After a bit of a rough patch (change of manager / cellar staff?) this pub is definitely back on its feet in terms of beer quality.
As to beer range, it's not a massive choice (outside of the regular festivals), but it's really good to always see at least one or two local beers on the bar, usually from Geo Wright (nr St Helens), Spitting Feathers (nr Chester) or our own Betwixt Beers, from Birkenhead.
Keep up the good work!

Better than average `Spoons. Neat, tidy and relaxing with a small sun-trap beer garden. Beer quality is generally good although the real ale line-up can be a bit unimaginative.

I've never been here for a beer as I often go just to eat (normally breakfast), so I can only review the food & coffee which are always fine. This pub is on the main road through New Ferry & has the odd distinction of being next door to one pub & right opposite another! This Wetherspoons opened November 2007 so it is still clean & neat. Nice layout with varied seating options, tasteful decor & low ceiling. I really must try one of the real ales on offer but unfortunately it really doesn't appeal for me to join the early morning, red faced pensioners in their breakfast tipple!
